You've printed photos before, but what about videos or animations? How do you even print those? Cineflips is a web app that makes it possible by turning your favorite videos and gifs into physical flipbooks that magically come to life as you flip through them.
If you're not familiar with flipbooks, they're small books with a series of pictures that vary gradually from one page to the next so that when the pages are flipped through in quick succession, the pictures appear to animate.
Most of us have experienced the joy of making flipbooks at some point in our lives. We'd spend hours drawing our animations—frame-by-frame—on Post-it pads or the corners of our textbooks, and then enjoy the fruits of our labor by rifling through the pages and watching our stories come to life. It's time to bring back those good times and Cineflips is here to help.
Simply put, people love flipbooks. We love making them. We love playing with them. And we love sharing them. Here are a few other reasons why you'll love Cineflips:
Flipbooks tell stories
A book wouldn't be satisfying if you only got to read one page of it. Whereas a picture is like one page of a book, a flipbook is the whole story.
Flipbooks are tangible
There's a reason why not everything has gone paperless; some things just work and feel better in your hands rather than on a computer screen.
Flipbooks are keepsakes
Like photos, you'll want to hold onto your flipbooks forever. Relive special moments of your life time and time again.
Flipbooks make fun-tastic gifts and greeting cards
Standard greeting cards are just folded up pieces of paper. Flipbooks, on the other hand, are magical thumb-powered stories chock-full of humor, wit, love, emotion, and whatever else you put inside.
HOW IT WORKS
Cineflips lays out the frames of your video/gif onto individual pages of a book. You could do this yourself using image editing software, but the process is laborious and time-consuming. Moreover, videos contain a high number of frames per second that would result in an inordinate number of pages if you used every frame. Cineflips simplifies the entire process by intelligently removing just enough frames to keep the animation smooth and the number of pages to a nice tidy size.
Using Cineflips is a breeze:
1. Upload your video or gif
You can choose a video or gif from your computer or mobile device, or simply paste in its link if it's located on the internet (e.g., reddit, Imgur, Dropbox, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, etc).
2. Customize the covers
Add colors, patterns, graphics, and/or text to the front, spine, and back covers with our easy-to-use online cover creator. Or design your own cover in a graphics program (like Photoshop) using our downloadable template as a guide, then upload it with a click of a button.
3. Add a personalized message
If you're sending your flipbook to someone as a gift, you can add an optional message to the first page of the book.
That's it! Once you're happy with your flipbook, you can download a free pdf that you can cut and assemble yourself, or you can order a professionally printed and bound copy to be sent to whomever you wish.
Two things to note:
- Videos and gifs should be 15 seconds or less. This is because our flipbooks are 66 pages and anything longer would result in too many frames being deleted from the video/gif. If your video/gif is longer than 15s, only the first 15s will be used.
- Designing your cover and adding a personalized message using our online tools are completely optional; you can leave them blank to be written, drawn, or painted on at your will.
Our flipbooks measure 4 × 2 inches and are 66 pages long (good for up to 15 seconds of footage). We decided on 66 pages after extensive testing: too few pages and you'd need to use shorter videos/gifs, or the animation would be too choppy; and too many pages and your flipbook would be overly thick and unwieldy.
We digitally print on 100lb matte-uncoated text paper for the inner pages and 80lb matte-uncoated cover paper for the covers. This gives the books a really nice thickness (0.5″) as well as good page-flipping performance.
All of our flipbooks are printed, bound, and shipped out from California.

HOW'D YOU COME UP WITH THIS IDEA?
My name is Sherwood and I came up with the idea for Cineflips after seeing this video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZuhYJynSk8. I thought it would make the perfect "Congratulations" card for a friend, but it felt kind of weak just emailing her the link. So I set about trying to turn the video into a flipbook, but soon ran into a whole lot of headache as I tried to convert the video into individual frames that could be placed onto individual sections of a page that could be printed out and then cut to size precisely and then somehow bound together and then shipped out, not to mention that I also wanted to put a unique cover on the outside that I would design myself… what a hassle! There had to be an easier way and when I couldn't find one online, I thought to myself, "Why don't I make one?"
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
We've made it pretty far on our own, but we need your help to clear a few more hurdles in our race to reach the end. Your support will help us finish software integration and workflow testing with our printing partner so that all of your orders flow automatically from our shopping cart to their printing machines. This means fewer or zero mishaps that might arise from having to manually upload orders to their system. And you'll get your flipbooks faster.
We also have a little more work left to do on our rather complex backend system that our easy-to-use site belies. Having another software engineer on board would really help even out the load and speed things up.
Any support you provide, whether it be a pledge or a share, will help us get Cineflips up and running before long so that you can start making better gifts for yourself as well as for others.
Currently, we're almost done with our web app, but we'd also like to build a smartphone app (Android, Apple, and Windows) that will let you to shoot a video, customize your covers and message, and order your flipbook right from phone. Our programmers are raring to go, but we need to raise additional funds to keep their bellies sated during their lengthy programming sessions. Should we be able to raise an additional $5,000 to top of our current funding goal, we'll be able to get started on our smartphone app right away.
Thanks for checking us out! We believe Cineflips is going to change the way you view your videos and gifs, literally. Even if you can't support us financially, you can still help make Cineflips a reality by sharing our project with your friends, family, and followers. Simply share or tweet our campaign using the links above (underneath the video). And if you'd like receive our updates and special offers, be sure to follow us Facebook or Twitter.
Risks and challenges
While we're almost finished with Cineflips, here are a few notable challenges that we still face:
There may be undiscovered bugs that could delay our launch date. During our Kickstarter campaign, we'll be testing our site, and if we discover any issues that lead to a schedule change, we'll promptly update our backers. Thankfully, we have a solid team of programmers to help mitigate any software problems that might arise.
We're in the midst of completing an integration process with our California-based printing partner that will allow orders to flow seamlessly from our end to theirs. Barring any major errors during the testing phase, which our printing partner has years of experience resolving with companies like Snapfish and Tiny Prints, they should be ready to rock & roll once your orders start coming through our site.
We're hoping that a lot of you will back our project, but aren't yet sure how our site and printing partner will stand up to all the traffic once we open the floodgates. On the printing side, our partner has reassured us that they are able to scale elastically to meet demand. On the software side, our server admin team will be monitoring things closely to make sure that interruptions are few or non-existent. Nevertheless, we may have to stagger access to the site according to your pledge amount and pledge date to ensure that everyone has a great experience.
