Unlocked: Caterpillar Armored Transport

Great work, Kickstarter! You've passed the $1.5M level and unlocked the Caterpillar, a transport designed specifically for use by pirates. The specifications are below. At the $1.75M level, your next unlock, you'll expand hardcore flight sim support to the game: flight chairs, multi-monitors, Track-IR, MFD panels and more!

Caterpillar
Builder: Drake Intergalactic
Crew (max): 5
Mass (empty): 68,000 Kg (heavier due to armor)
Focus: Heavy Mercantile (Pirate)

Drake maintains that the Caterpillar, a sprawling, modular spacecraft which appears at least somewhat like its namesake, is for legitimate commerce and extended search and rescue missions... but at the end of the day, the Caterpillar is truly the evil twin of the Freelancer.

Designed for supporting pirate operations, the Caterpillar features a large cargo hold for carrying loot, heavier armor than other freighters in its class and room for five crew able to serve in boarding operations. Despite its heavier armor, the Caterpillar isn't a bulldog... a succesful operation will require a fighter escort.

Final Countdown & Final Stretch Goal

We've come along way! With 48 hours to go, we're at well over $4 million and we've already set the record for crowd-funding games! The final few stretch goals are near… the campaign couldn't have gone any better.

It's time to reveal how the campaign is going to end. Over the next 24 hours you're going to get a number of updates about all aspects of the Star Citizen project at the Roberts Space Industries website. Everything from art to music to team member introductions… the sort of things you've come to expect over the past month, released quickly! Then, at the 24 hour mark (1 PM CST on Sunday) the party really gets started.

We will be live-streaming the end of the campaign live from Cloud Imperium's temporary offices in Austin, Texas! You'll watch Chris and the team broadcast the final hours of the campaign telethon-style until this is all finally over. We'll be answering fan questions, giving away prizes and generally having a great time… and since we'll be in Austin we've arranged for some special guests from the old days of Origin and developing Wing Commander to stop by and swap war stories!

We're also going to be offering several limited-time special-offer ship packages. We want to stress beforehand, though, that these are ONLY to support the game. Every single additional ship we offer for sale in the next 48 hours will never be sold for cash again… but they will be available through gameplay. If you decide to pick one up, it should be because you want to support Star Citizen and not because you're worried it's a ship you'll never have otherwise. Check back soon to see the new ship options!

Wait, what's this? Breaking news! A message bearing the golden seal of the Imperator himself: Congratulation Citizens! Your dedication to the cause is impossible to deny. Working with the imperial fleet shipyards, I have secured one final lofty stretch goal for you: if we can reach the previously impossible $5.5 million level, then the Bengal carrier will be playable in the finished game. It will be very difficult to earn a Bengal… but when you do, it will be an amazing base for clans, squadrons and guilds. Can we get there?

You heard the man! $5.5 million to fly the Bengal carrier in Star Citizen. Here's to a great 48 hours!

Unlocked: Kallis System

Good news: we're continuing the system unlocks all the way to $5 million! At $4.1M, you've unlocked Kallis... and if you see another system, it'll mean we've topped the crowd-funding record!

Kallis System

Ownership: UEE Scientific Outlay
Planets: 9
Planetary Rotation: Kalis IV 322 SED
Import: Research Equipment, Luxury Goods
Export: Rare Metals
Crime Status: Low
Black Market: None
UEE Strategic Value: Grey

Kallis is a system still in its infancy. All the planetary masses are still forming and cooling. It's not ideal for colonists and with the exception of some rare metals in unusual concentrations it's not great for merchants… but all eyes are on the system in the scientific community. As such, the system has no native population or representation in the UEE senate; it is officially governed by a panel of Imperial researchers.

Kalis IV, survey number DXP-55.7c, has attracted particular attention because of its believed similarity to Earth at this stage of a star system's formation. Survey teams are observing the planet from orbital stations and spy-eye recon drones twenty-three hours a day and the work is less than thrilling. The potential for studying how an Earth-like planet is formed is exciting, but all parties involved know that it will take tens of thousands of years to gather the necessary data. Black market traders might be advised that the crews manning these posts will be looking for other forms of entertainment to fill their days.

Kallis' 7th planet, a gas giant, has been identified as a potential refueling station, although only a small Lagrange platform currently exists there. The belief is that Kallis may become a jump hub as expansion into this region of the galaxy continues; canny real estate investors would be advised to purchase land deeds immediately.

Next, at $4.2M: "Massive SuperEarth planets terraformed solely for their resources."

$4 Million! New System, New Ship, New Goals!

FOUR MILLION DOLLARS! We've DOUBLED the original goal and unlocked a LOT of stretch goals. Here's what you just earned: increased community updates, professional mod tools FREE for players and monthly webcasts from the team. Squadron 42 will feature a richer storyline with 45 missions (more than Wing Commander I!) Star Citizen will feature a persistent universe on launch along with an additional flyable ship, the Drake Cutlass (detailed below.) The game will launch with FIFTY star systems and will feature ENHANCED boarding options (including melee weapons, upgradeable HUDs, zero-g external combat.)

Read on to see the details of our final $100K Challenge star system, Chronos... it's an important one and you'll be glad you unlocked it when you learn more about the Star Citizen universe! Our next target is $4.5 million, at which you will unlock 60 star systems and the largest playable ship will be massive armored cruisers! In addition, getting to $4.5 million combined will unlock all of the remaining Kickstarter goals.

If we can make it to $5 million, there'll be a companion app, even more community updates and webcasts and a monthly town hall meeting with Chris Roberts! Squadron 42 will add celebrity voice actors and have a total of fifty missions... and Star Citizen will match the original Privateer and feature 70 star systems! Finally, a new base type will be added: alien derelicts.

Chronos System

Ownership: UEE
Planets: 2.5
Planetary Rotation: Archangel Project 360 SED
Import: GeoEngineering Products,
Export: None
Crime Status: Low
Black Market: None
UEE Strategic Value: Red

Site of the infamous Synthworld Project. Chosen because it’s a sparse, vast, empty system. The planets Chronos I & II are dead worlds on an orbit very close to their sun. An ELE destroyed the planets on the outer half of the system, offering the perfect opportunity to design the Synthworld’s distance and orbit from the sun for optimal planetary conditions.

When the project began, there was a lot of traffic in and out of the system, but now, money and enthusiasm has waned. Deemed by some as an embarrassment, a financial vampire by others, the Synthworld stands as a half-constructed monstrosity that most doubt will ever be completed. The government is still struggling to make the project a success.

Though its star has fallen, the SynthWorld Project is still an excellent place for traders to offload raw materials. With the proper bribes, contractors can bring in heavy metals, construction equipment and shipped labor to be sold at inflated government prices. Those who live outside the law should be wary: there may be no place in the galaxy worse for conducting illegal business. The UEE's elite 18th Battle Fleet is on permanent station at Chronos and have spent years with little to do aside from practice their aim.

Drake Cutlass

Builder: Drake Interplanetary
Crew (max): 2
Mass (empty): 35,000 Kg
Focus: "System Defense" (Piracy)

Drake Interplanetary claims that the Cutlass is a low-cost, easy-to-maintain solution for local in-system militia units. The larger-than-average cargo hold, RIO seat and dedicated tractor mount are, the company literature insists, for facilitating search and rescue operations. While it's true that Cutlasses are used throughout known space for such missions, their prime task and immediate association is with high space piracy. Cutlasses, often operating in groups, menace distant transit lanes to prey on hapless merchants. A single Cutlass can ravage a mid-sized transport and a pack operating as a clan can easily take down larger prey. STOL adaptations allow these interceptors to operate off of modified transports or pocket destroyers; the most common warships that make up pirate caravans.

Designer note: the idea is that Drake Interplanetary builds ships which are ostensibly for legal purposes (local militias, etc.) but are 'obviously' for pirates: so it has the appearance of a military fighter, but mated to an awkwardly larger hull for collecting loot; it should have visible forward-facing tractor beams and a seat for a second crewman even though there's no turret (as you'll need a second man to board an enemy ship.) It also has a cheaper build quality: if Anvil is building Jeeps and Origin is building BMWs, this is a Honda.
