Friday Update: Kickstarter, Card Shipping & Forums

Greetings, Citizens! Our big news is that we've signed the lease for the new Cloud Imperium office in Austin, Texas, where much of the game's development will happen! It's official, Star Citizen has a new home! We've prepared a short video showing you what it looks like today:

Kickstarter Linking

We've had a lot of questions about the Kickstarter linking process. Everyone is wondering when their pledge will appear on the site. The answer is that it may take another two weeks: Kickstarter gives pledgers a grace period to confirm their payment before we're allowed to send out the end-of-campaign survey collecting your information. Once that period is over, we will send out the survey through Kickstarter to collect the relevant information that will allow us to link the pledge to your account. Once we have that in hand, we will begin the process of linking your pledges to your RSI account, note due to the large volume of transactions and time allowed for people to complete the surveys this will not be an immediate process. For those who added money for Kickstarter add ons, you'll be given a 'credit' at RSI which you will then be able to divide into the add ons you purchased on Kickstarter, including those no longer available like the Vanduul, M50, etc. Kickstarter users will automatically have access to the lower price add ons and extra tiers that those who registered for the RSI site before 11/26 have. Also note that the winners of the referral contest will be announced after the Kickstarter pledges are integrated; we can't give away the big prize until everyone has had a chance to list their referrals!

Kickstarter users who do not already have RSI accounts should go ahead and register here.

There have also been a lot of questions about shipping Citizen Cards and other extras. Do not worry if you put down the wrong address or if you didn't include one at all. We will send out a message confirming your address and the name you would like printed on your Citizen Card before we begin the shipping process. We will also confirm your t-shirt size so that you don't receive petite when you wanted an XL.

Thank you all for your patience during the forum transition. We're roughly one week away from the switch over to and fresh start of a vBulletin system. This will allow for a much more robust forum experience with search, improved structure and better access for moderation. The current plan is to save the existing content where it is available as an archive--transferring over the posts would take additional weeks of work. We'd like to know what you think about this: is a fresh start the right choice for the forums? You can vote at the RSI site!

We'd also like to hear what subforums you'd like established when we launch. Want a separate forum for guild recruiting? One for submitting game ideas? One to talk about the Lamp? Let us know your ideas!

For your reference, here is current layout plan for the new forums:

Star Citizen
- General Chat
- Game Ideas
- Guilds/Squadrons
- Modding
- Fan Art & Fiction

Classic Games
- Wing Commander Chat
- Starlancer/Freelancer Chat
- Other Games

Weekly Update

Going forward we will be providing a general update like this every Friday. Everyone who has an RSI account will receive this update via e-mail along with a summary of all the other Comm-Link and Spectrum Dispatches posts published that week. If you would prefer not to see these messages, please click on the "Update Subscription preferences" link at the bottom of the e-mail.

Insurance FAQ and Update

Welcome back, citizens! For those of you in the USA we hope you had a relaxing holiday weekend and that you were able to take advantage of the grace period for pledges at Roberts Space Industries.

Today we've posted an update on the game's status and a FAQ about the ship insurance provided to anyone who pledged before November 26th. You can find that all here.

If you pledged through Kickstarter alone, please remember to create a Roberts Space Industries account. Once the Kickstarter end-of-campaign survey goes out we will link your purchases so that they appear there. It's where you'll eventually be able to interact with the community, purchase additional tiers and add-on and then ultimately download the game and any digital elements you purchased.

In the coming weeks, we will continue to bring you in game fiction as we have previously, the schedule is Monday for Kid Crimson, Wednesday for various info bursts from the Star Citizen galaxy and Friday for the latest Cal Mason episode.

We will be sharing development updates as they happen, and will also give all our backers a “Weekly” report.

We hope to have the new forum software integrated with the old forum content by next week, so you can be using a much more friendly and powerful forum system,

We also plan to bring a one hour live webcast for our subscribers on a weekly basis, making this available to the rest of the community afterwards via our YouTube channel. Wingman, the Lamp and Sandi will all feature, as well as questions from the community about the game and interviews with various team members. We will start this webcast once we moved into our new office space in Austin next month.

Finally once all the Kickstarter Star Citizens are integrated, which will take a couple of weeks as we await final data from Kickstarter, we can bring up a “backer wall” and switch on things like Galactapedia, Engineering and the Holo-Viewer.

A lot to do, but it will be fun and we’re glad to have you all on the journey!

The Pledge

Thank You

After finally getting a good night’s sleep the team here at Roberts Space Industries would all like to thank you for helping us make history.

It's gratifying to see Star Citizen mentioned across the gaming and mainstream media; how its broken records, how it shows that people still believe in PC games, how they want to play a space sim, how it is another nail in the coffin of the traditional publisher model.

We hope that you will feel the same way.

Even though a lot of press and commentators are praising our skill in running a campaign, the secret sauce that really made Star Citizen happen was YOUR dedication. Your belief in this game energized us as the days got long. Your desire to play kept us going as we faced technical issues and growing mountains of work to do. The community YOU built made sure WE stayed believers. You made this game your own; big publishers may someday look back at this as the beginning of the end, a day when the players took over the development process and made it their own.

So from all of us at RSI: good work, Citizens!

The Pledge

You've spent the last month pledging for the Star Citizen project with your money, your time and your trust. Now it's time for us to do the same. We've created "The Pledge", a founding document to let you know the standards to which we intend to keep ourselves to and how we will keep you informed and involved in the process over the next two years. You can access The Pledge here.

Grace Period

In the aftermath of some of the craziest 48 hours we've ever experienced it’s become clear that there's a sizable number of people that were unable to pledge, or adjust their pledges due to the difficulties with the RSI site.

As a backer through Kickstarter you didn't have the same issues but we're letting you know that because we don't want to punish our incredible community for issues on our side we have decided to adapt our plans and offer a grace period for all current members of the RSI community.

If you have a membership, regardless of whether you have previously purchased a tier, you will be able to pledge at the current prices at the Roberts Space Industries Pledge Page through this weekend. We will keep the limited add-on ships available through that time for everyone who tried to purchase one but wasn't able. Everything will switch to the new pricing structure on Monday November 26th.

Kickstarter Integration

It takes about 14 days for Kickstarter to resolve any billing issues that may arise from the delayed payment setup through Amazon. We will then send out a survey all 34,397 of you that will ask for details like which add-ons you opted for, you shipping address for physical items (if you pledged for a tier with these) and so on. We will then integrate this into the database at RSI. It is our hope to have everyone integrated as soon as possible, but it depends on people being diligent with their surveys, so please help your fellow kickstarters and us out by quickly answering the survey when you receive it!

In the meantime if you haven't joined as a member please go to the RSI site and enlist to reserve your member name and set up your account which your Kickstarter pledges will be linked to.

Moving Forward

Look for updates from us in the very near future as we go about transitioning the site back to being focused on our community and telling the story of development.

For those of our backers in the USA we wish you a warm Thanksgiving holiday for later this week.

The biggest “Thank you” possible! Chris Roberts and the RSI team.

Thank You! - End of Campaign Transition

The battle is over and we - PC gamers, space sim fans, WingNuts, Lancers and the rest - have won. You've not only met every goal we set, you've exceeded them. Star Citizen will be released because of your dedication and your willingness to put your money where our mouths are. Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it.

The question is: what happens next?

Our intention has always been to make Roberts Space Industries YOUR site. It's not a public advertisement for the game; it's a private community for those who are making the game happen. We want your input on what we're doing and we want to share our plans with you; the occasional passer-by doesn't concern us. The plan was initially to immediately switch on a wall that would allow only you, our backers, to access features like the Comm-Link and the Spectrum Dispatches. Kickstarter has thrown something of a wrench in this plan: we can't change the site until the Kickstarter backers are integrated, which may take up to two weeks, otherwise we would be blocking thousands of backers from participating.

Updates and features will continue, returning to a regular schedule in the next few days. The team needs a few days to collect ourselves and reform before jumping into the immense task ahead (after the last month, our husbands, wives, children and yes, pets, miss us!) We will also be launching new sections which have been in the works for some time: the Galactapedia will tell you more about the Star Citizen world, Engineering will introduce you to game mechanics that are being planned and Holovids will offer you video footage from the game as it takes shape.

What about pledges? Good news: those of you who got in on the ground floor are covered. Your ships have lifetime insurance policies and for the next year you will have the ability to purchase further tiers or upgrade existing ones at the initial prices. That's not true of everyone else: if you want to back Star Citizen and participate in this amazing community, you still can. but it's going to cost you a little extra as of now, and you aren't going to have as many extras (no lifetime insurance, for example.)

One issue which concerns us is what to do with the funding tracker. So we're going to throw the issue up to you: in two weeks, when the wall goes up, what do you want to see done with the tracker? Without the 'push' of the campaign it probably won't update very dramatically. but it's always possible it will go up enough to reach future stretch goals anyway. Should we keep it, remove it or put it somewhere else? We'll let the community decide.

We also have previously outlined the 'behind the screens' subscription plans available now. They're designed for users who simply want to give us a little extra support during the development - you're getting the whole story, regardless - but we will have some extra fun for our monthly contributors.

We can't thank you enough for everything you've done for this project. Please see the next update on 'The Pledge' for our promise to you. The next two years are going to be incredible for all involved and we're thoroughly happy that all of you are along for this exciting ride.

$5.5 Million - On to the Stars!

$5.5 million! You've unlocked the Bengal carrier, added motion capture to Squadron 42 and earned the exclusive Record Breaker skin.

When we set out to crowd-fund Star Citizen we asked for two million dollars, the absolute minimum with which we thought we could build a solid game. And then we planned stretch goals so that we could include everything else we imagined. We expected three million, hoped for four million, dreamed of five million and so on. And the absolute top option, the impossible dream, was six million.

Six million was what it would take us to build the game we were imagining with all the bells and whistles we wanted included. Well, here we are with just over eight hours to go and that impossible goal where everything is unlocked is suddenly in sight. At six million you'll launch the game with 100 systems, a full orchestral score and a free copy of the first Squadron 42 mission disk, Behind Enemy Lines.

It's not as sexy as unlocking the carrier, for sure, but would certainly be pretty amazing if we met every one of our goals. So let's push this campaign all the way to the last minute. We can make this march!
