Back SotA, Get a Crossbow in Star Citizen!

Posted by Cloud Imperium Games Corporation (Creator)

Attention Citizens,

Breaking news! You heard earlier today that Richard Garriott’s Shroud of the Avatar will feature an item designed by Chris Roberts useable in-game… and we’ve decided to return the favor! If you back both Star Citizen and Shroud of the Avatar at the $40 Adventurer level or higher, we’ll give your pilot in Star Citizen a powerful crossbow straight out of Richard’s new world… perfect for providing an extra-lethal punch during boarding actions. The Shroud of the Avatar Kickstarter campaign ends in just twelve hours, so make your pledge NOW!

If you would like to pledge via Paypal you can do so here.

Weapon Description:

Iolo Industries Armor-Piercing Crossbow

Some things never go out of style, and the Iolo Crossbow is proof: an elegant weapon that has proved itself capable of repelling boarders effectively time and again over the centuries. It stands well above laser sidearms in terms of armor penetration, the ideal weapon for anyone needing to blast through two inches of plasteel space armor. Designed and hanf-crafted by David Watson, these rare crossbows are prized by pilots for their reliability and their low level of required maintenance. This weapon is an exact replica of the one created for Richard “Lord British” Garriott’s Shroud of the Avatar so you can arm your character with it in both universes!

Damage: 2 cm / bolt (+3 against armor)

Reload: .5 seconds

Effective Range: 500 meters

UEE Restriction: RED

I had already backed these games, so this is just a bonus to me.

Seriously, lately all the news and updates I see when it comes to Star Citizen is just horrible ploys and presentations of "Pay [enter amount of money here] to get [enter asinine item here]". Since when did Star Citizen devolve into this? It's really irritating. I paid $30 for the game, and I helped fund it. Why on Earth, almost 6 months on, are you guys still pushing items on us, in an attempt to get more money? It's ludicrous.

    4. James & Amy Anderson on

I honestly don't get the griping here other than typical Internet rage. If the reward had been for having played a previous game in a franchise or a preorder we wouldn't complain but because it is a KS you are not interested in you freak out?

If the item is a big deal in game it will be an issue, most likely it will be like every other reward of this type and a ice bonus for the first 20m of the game and quickly replaced.

As for backing I am sure very few people backed because of the bow though I am sure the free advertising helped and some on the fence prob said why not.

    5. Mark on

Did people really pay $40 for an in-game item concept with ambiguous stats for a system (non-ship combat) of unknown usefullness or depth for a game that has barely started development? Fair enough if you wanted to back the game but if not then i've got some concept horse armour for my idea of an rpg I'd like to sell you.

      Effective Range: 500 meters....WT&#$&?? O.O LoL

    7. Soulwynd on

      @Dave blanchard

It's rather simple, really. All he has really made in his life was a rpg that got milked to death. It mostly became a cult thing. Arguably, Ultima Online was good, but to be honest what really has made it good are the custom shards that are still alive. You have Lineage 1/2 which are soso, you have City of Heroes which was a bland grindfest and was only alive thanks to the roleplaying server, also already closed. And his latest accomplishment was the second shortest lived mmorpg, Tabula Rasa. Which was hyped while he personally switched terms around to make it seem like it had innovations when it did not. Not to mention that much like spore, it had a huge design switch right after his hypresentation (noun. A presentation which is misguiding and only meant to hype consumers into buying blindly) and the hole was further down for that game.

So in my more objective opinion it's just a long list of bad. A long list which I have played most of.

In my more subjective opinion, the whole personality cult around him disgusts me.

So yeah. I'm done giving money to him. Learned my lesson. I'm reduced to rolling my eyes whenever his name comes up along with Molyneux.

Apologies if anyone gets mad or if it offends their opinion of him or something of the life. Not my intention was just asked why and felt I should answer.

i will say thx for showing me the other project. I backed it because why not ... i played ultima online many many hours. But i have to say i hate crossmarketing. i pledged btw not enough to get it because i think its stupid and i dont want to support it. I really hope that was the only time this happened. Chris pls give us at least a statement. But well 80 ppl of 35k i dont think anyone will even read it.

I am a bit worried about that to. I am all for a Crossbow in the game however but I do hope it fit in to the setting. I would not like to have some medieval weapon that seems just out of place in the game world. The crossbow however as a weapon can make sense in a Science fiction setting even if a bit of a eccentric weapon. I just hope it made to fit the setting. Not be something directly taken from the other game.

(Also to be honest I am a bit sceptical towards cross-promotion. Now I backed SotA but that is because I really do like Ultima 7, Ultima Online and a few other Ultima games.)

    13. Jason on

i'm not in favor of this kind of thing. all it will do is take me out of the game every time i see a crossbow

I fully support this decision. I see a lot of hate and miss-information in regards to what people think Shroud of the Avatar will be. I see a lot of belly-aching over it being a 'multi-player' game, when that is only one aspect of it.

Also, I see a lot of 'outrage' when we don't even have all the information of how this will translate to the game (is the exclusivity merely in the 'look/feel/design' and not in stats? If so, big deal! If you don't care about Shroud of the Avatar, why the hell would you want a cross-bow inspired by it's lore? Why not just get a weapon of similar/equal/superior stats and move on with your day?)

On top of this, this is a small community of old-school developers, and despite of every ones knee jerk response to SotA initial presentation, it still holds to a lot of the 'classic' values that made rpgs of yester-year memorable.

    18. Missing avatar

      Godewijn on

I doubt it will be exclusive, probably just an exclusive skin.
I also feel it's on the edge, but I think it's actually fine the more I think about it. They're old friends, they used to do it in the old days (kilrathi in ultima etc), and if devs cannot put something fun for their own sake in the game and to help each other out then... wow... that would be bad... they are still the makers of the game.

      Nika Cholokashvili on

@Joao Very dissapointing news indeed! I can understand the notion to help a friend with his kickstarter campaign but there are ways to do it without compromising your own game! Exclusive non-cosmetic in-game items? Really?! Such a terrible decision. I hope this will be the end on this and we won't be getting any more of this ridicilous trend.

Funny enough, I was looking at the SotA before this and did not pledge for it because of all the exclusive items they have over there. I know I already said this, but it is very dissapointing some of that game design choice crept over this game was well. Here's hoping I did not place trust in Chris Roberts in vain...

    20. Christoph Wagner on

Pretty lame that I'd have to back a multiplayer game that wishes it would be an RPG to get the crossbow.

      João Carlos Bastos

I'm very disappointed with this decision. I already backed Star Citizen twice (both on the official website, and on Kickstarter), and I'm not pleased at all that I will be missing on obtaining a weapon type because I'm not willing to drop $40 on a game I have no interest in.

Funnily enough, I originally backed SotA at a lower pledge level (basically because I'm a fan of the old Ultima games, and not because of the actual game), until after a certain update they introduced a number of exclusive items for backers above a certain tier, after which I dropped out of that campaign, since the combination of exclusive items + a game that doesn't appeal to me (it became clear the focus was on MP, and not on SP like the old Ultima titles) killed my interest.

It's ironic that now I'm missing out on content for a game I'm looking forward to, because I'm not willing to back another game.

    22. Missing avatar

      TheCraiggers on

It's hard to know if it will be pay to win without knowing the other weapons offered, but regardless it's very annoying and IMO a bad idea. If I saw this shit going on before pledging, I would have closed the window and never looked back. I think Star Citizen will be the last kickstarter I'm pledging to that is obviously from people with the money and/or clout to get more funding from a publisher to finish their game. This is starting to feel like I backed a project made by EA.

More importantly, I'm getting tired of all these damn emails hitting my box. I don't want to fully unsubscribe, but I could care less about this crap. Is there a way of just getting an email when the goddamned game is finished?

    23. MaxPuster

      >Reload: .5 seconds
Crossbows should be in the 30sec range.
The repeating crossbow had a loading time of 1.5 seconds, if you forsake any concept of aiming. THEIR effective range was 60m, with not much power behind.

      >Effective Range: 500 meters
Again, ridiculous, unless you assume materials that are not even in sight today. For that range you also need a lot of headspace for the ballistic missile.

      >UEE Restriction: RED
I would give the crossbow less range, 50m perhaps, and a crappy loading time, and comparatively low damage against armour, at the benefit of being legal. No kind of automatic control that sniffs out explosives will detect a crossbow :-)

But, not backing Shroud Avatar, you should of course ignore me.

    24. StromIV on

I look at the crossbow as something you will have lying around, or maybe mounted to the wall. I doubt I would want to use it in a fast paced, "Get the hell out of my ship" boarding party. Of course, that also depends on how the boarding part thing works in the long run.

    25. Richard Lee on

      I hope you are right

    26. Missing avatar

      Kharan on

Also, until we get to see the stats of other personal weapons (I presume a list is forthcoming before launch), all this complaining about the crossbow's assumed uberness is jumping the gun as we have nothing to compare with.

    27. Missing avatar

      Kharan on

It doesn't say anywhere that the crossbow is the *best* weapon for hand-to-hand combat. For instance, spaceship corridors are rarely long, straight affairs. For such close-quarters combat, you will most likely be better off with a rapid-fire weapon, flamethrower or similar.

Sure, the crossbow is probably good in certain situations, but I doubt it is the be-all, end-all of personal weapons in Star Citizen.

    28. Richard Lee on

This sounds too much like pay to win for me, something that we were told this game wouldn't be.

I'm not interested in the avatar game at all, but I now know i'll be playing at a disadvantage against other players is SC. this makes me very sad.

    29. DeeK on

Interesting idea of having a crossbow in a space age game. I'm not interested in Shroud of the Avatar, hence no crossbow for me, but I do like the idea.

0.5 second reload time, for a crossbow that is an exact replica of one from medieval times? Seems rather absurd. They should take 5 - 10 seconds to load, depending on bow poundage, strength of the drawer, and possible winding mechanism.

Effective range of 500m? In the corridor of a spaceship?! Assuming the corridor has a maximum height of 2.5m and standard gravity of 9.8m/s/s, a bolt fired from a height of 1.7m with a realistic launch speed of 90m/s ... maximum distance reached before it hit the floor would be 71m. Far FAR short of 500m.

In fact, to hit a target that is 1m above the floor, from a distance of 500m, the bolt would have to be fired at a speed of 738m/s. Yes, nearly twice the speed of sound. Never mind that the accuracy of hand firing this wildly improbable weapon would be abysmal at 500m.

I haven't even factored drag into the calculations, which would be very significant at those speeds, reducing the range even more so.

I really hope they review the specs of this weapon. I like the idea, but I hate the impossibility of it.

Ok, i'am sorry but i have to say it, this sucks hard. I pledged over 150$ for StarCitizen and you said "it will be oldschool, no pay to win, you get everthing, no dlc...

And now, years before the game comes out, you start with crossmarketing...

That is a huge dissapointment! You give Items away, witch are NOT only cosmetic, for money. Thats even worse than some huge gamestudios...

    35. Stiler Orion on

Kinda sucks, I backed both games (because I want to enjoy both and have faith in them and the creators) but only at the "early" pledges (Becuase I was waiting on both to start and got in).

So it kind of feel slike those of us that backed super early enough to get in on the early-adopter pledge tiers are being punished for being so quick to show our support.

No I didn't pledge nearly as much as many other people, but I don't have a ton of money and try to spread out what I can over many games.

    36. Blaz on

@Lubos Mlcoch: I agree. This exclusive nonsense is exactly what I didn't expect from them.

      @Dave Blanchard
Note that I didn't make any mention of the court case. Why? Because that entire case was around the allegations of NC Soft falsifying a letter of Resignation from Richard Garriot, while he was flying about in space. Before you try and make some cute little statement, make sure you have your facts straight.

Otherwise NCSoft gave them nearly seven years to work on it. It was only "rushed" because of all the conflict between his big fancy "Dream Team" as well as a lack of direction for the game, which lasted for a few years into its development. It wasn't NC Softs fault for that, it was his own for not providing a strong, clear central vision for the game's direction, as well as allowing what was essentially just petty bickering to eat up so much time.

So get off your biased high horse, and once again make sure you have your facts straight.

    42. Ryan "Keokuk" Smith on

@cursed yeah, that had nothing to do with NCSoft forcing it out the door before it was ready then pulling the plug, yep it was all richard garriott....probably why he lost that court case...oh wait...he didn't.

    44. Marcus B on

      @ StromIV

I only heard a little bit about the boarding actions for the game. But do you or anybody else know if it's only restricted to a first person view or are you able to do it in a third person view as well?

    45. Missing avatar

      cursedseishi on

Agreed Soulwynd. The guy can say whatever he wants, but until Richard Garriot can actually prove he is still capable of even halfway decent games that aren't social site cash-ins, I'm just not gonna back it.

Tabula Rasa was the last game, but his hubris turned what he said was a AAA MMO designed by a dream team into some last minute scramble to try and cobble even a concept together, leading to a rushed and ultimately weak product. A product he then left to die while he gallivanted about in space instead of staying and helping to salvage it like he should of.

That kind of person I just can't support.
