Constellation Paint-Overs

As we promised back in November, work on the RSI Constellation Mk3 is continuing! Today we're sharing some of the detailed paint-overs of the internals, including the berths and hangar bay, as well as the very first detail images of the P52 snub fighter! As many of you know, the Constellation carries a small fighter in an internal bay which players can choose to launch and pilot.

Freelancer Renderings

To say we were blown away by the response to Friday's MISC Freelancer update would be an understatement. We're so excited that fans are already passionate about their ships and our work and your comments absolutely do impact the development process.

We would like to clear up a few misconceptions and provide a little more information on the subscription program. The video posted on Friday was an abbreviated version of a longer edit for subscribers that we haven't shared yet as we won't have a good solution for segmenting content until everyone from Kickstarter is integrated. Once that data is in we will have three areas of access -

  • PUBLIC: for anyone, featuring an overview and teases of the game and the ability to back.
  • BACKERS: the Comm-Link, forums, Spectrum Dispatch, Holo-Viewer, Engineering, Galactapedia and RSI Museum.
  • SUBSCRIBERS: Jump Point, The Vault and a more involved and exclusive behind-the-scenes area.

One thing the abbreviated video didn't do was make it clear that this is NOT the final Freelancer design. It came across as this is the final look. The session we filmed was a review session of the work in progress and went over Chris' notes to Jim Martin, which included a lot of the things people have been talking about. That detail just didn't make it into the shorter version. Going forward we're going to make sure that even the teaser versions for non-subscribers make it clear that this sort of thing is still an early step in the development of any ship! There is normally weeks if not a couple of months that go on in the ship design and development process and many, many iterations as we have to think about the functionality and ergonomics as much as the look of any ship that is going into Star Citizen.

As we had shared a couple of early concepts with the community and let you vote on the direction you wanted to take it (which was NOT voting on the final look as that is impossible to do when you're in 2D concept for the same reason car or plane concepts never match up 100% with the final article) we wanted to come back with multiple video updates for subscribers and backers on the process so everyone could see the amount of thought and love that goes into designing each ship.

We're still figuring out a good way to get the subscriber content to the subscribers before the site becomes segmented and we owe everyone the first issue of Jump Point - that will be coming probably the following week (i.e. week of Dec 17th). We'll try to get the longer version out to subscribers this coming week and perhaps share the longer version with everyone on Friday so they can see the kind of in-depth stuff we want to provide for "Development Subscribers". Check back soon to learn how being a subscriber helps the game and all about the cool additional content the system is allowing us to create!

      On the Cockpit (The Bridge), Why is there no arm rest on any of the chair. Do they move up and down, did you leave it out for any reason, or did you forget about. Everything look amazing. I love the P52 (Space A-10), I say this because the piece in the front-center look like a gatling cannan. Love to see more.

      :looks at cockpit: Still no seatbelt or crash webbing technology in the future? Someone's gonna break a rib on those arm rests when the ship starts getting knocked around.

      exploring / trading is probably what I might do more, I already got as combat ship, but I still got time to choose, before the ability to upgrade / add new ships is closed for ever, so I still got time, I was tempted to get a subscription, but I feel saving up for another ship is probably better in the long run

      still, there is time to choose and time to either upgrade my existing pledge to get the connie then get a freelancer or keep the hornet and get the freelancer, but the freelancer is a ship I wouldn't mind owning early on, so I have a choice to make,

      @Matthew: that all depends on what you want to do: if you like to explore and do some trading on the side, get the Freelancer. If you like to haul large shipments from A to B and get into some fights, get the Connie/Stella.

      sorry reply is a bit mixed, I already pledged on KS for the Hornet, but at a later date want one other, so its either the connie or the freelancer that I will get as my second ship, but can't decide which one it will be

      even though the connie is a lot more money, while the freelancer is a lot cheaper as an addon to get, so can't decide which one, and I will only get one other ship, so I dont know which one to get of the two?

      @Matthew: You can get more then one ship, you don't have to pick just one.

      Now, as a side note, Im tested to get the connie, but at the same time, I'm interested in getting the freelancer, even though the connie is a lot more, but I can only get one ship, and hard pressed to decide which one to get, as I already pledged for the Hornet, damn, I really not sure what to do, I might not bother with the sub package, and save up for one of the ships instead, but as that small fighter is a very nice ship too, the Constellation might be my next ship or not, damn its a hard choice

      That P52 is a sexy beast! I hope we can give it a sexy red paint job, maybe with some hot-rod flames.

      that P52 does look sexy, now I am somewhat tempted to get the Constellation, but I can't do it yet, but I am tempted to get this ship instead of the freelancer, but I really dont know (already got the Hornet)

      but I have to admit, I like the sketches so far, heck, I might pledge extra for the lower subscription model, if there is going to be a lot more information available for subscribers, I am really interested in the direction this game is going and the ship designs,

      I know it's still a concept, but just in case, there's something missing in the cockpit: all those chairs need foot rests (for stability/comfort/whatever) !

      You can get one on your own server or singleplayer easily and even buy it at theirs.. Now you just dont start with it on their server...

      If that is the concept art for the snub fighter, then I must say that I am disappointed that I did not spend enough money to get my own constellation ship. That fighter looks awesome! I want one :( ...

      @John: There's also two maneuvering thrusters on the side of the engines, in the same + configuration as the front four n the nose. Can't really see them in these pictures, but they're visible in the initial renders we got in the Constellation pdf.

      @Johan There's definitely 10 small maneuvering thrusters and possibly 4 large thrusters, so I get a total of 14 thrusters. Did you miss the small ones aft? The larger ones are harder to count, there's several intakes, but only 4 exhausts

      @Kevin - If you want to be able to turn a ship, you have to have attitude thrusters forward of the center of gravity. The further forward the better to maximize maneuverability, and likewise they should be tangential to the beam of the craft in order to make full use of the thrust. Your suggestions would limit the performance of the p52. In any case, it's probably not going to be a factor--the thruster effects are going to be brief and relatively small, and that's why they're so hard to notice in a lot of the gameplay footage and trailers we've seen so far.

      It's a bit hard to tell at first glance, but there are ten total thrusters (two aft, two per wing, four on the nose.) But also the nose thrusters are angled more forward, letting them be used for maneuvering and retro. And judging from the pic from below that flared nose will keep them out of sight for cockpit view, all in all a sleek little bugger, will be fun to get one eventually :) (Cant afford the Constellation out of the gate, but I'll get one one day :) )

      That's great just one thing with the Snub Fighter, It LOOKS like there are vector thrust nozzles on the nose of the ship... those are currently Vertical up - down and left - right. I'm just thinking that those are likely to have some sort of illuminated flames or gases shooting out of them when you do any sort of manoeuvring... This concerns me because visibility in a dog fight is key.

      2 possible solutions...

      1: put them on the back of the ship... Not ideal because the shorter rear beam of the ship will alter the thrust/rotation profile of the fighter.


      2: rotate the thrust nozzles 45 degrees so that any flames/gases will shoot out on either side of the pilots forward view. This will then obviously require that multiple nozzles fire at the same time to rotate the ship in any one plane... that is the top two would both have to fire to make the ship flip in the vertical axis... But that might be cooler anyway so WIN WIN.

      Also the P52 appears to have 9 x TR1 secondary thrusters.

      I just noticed it has 4 lasers and a Gatling gun. I only noticed the two lasers + Gatling before.

      That's a lot of firepower!
