The Pledge

Posted by Cloud Imperium Games Corporation (Creator)

Thank You

After finally getting a good night’s sleep the team here at Roberts Space Industries would all like to thank you for helping us make history.

It's gratifying to see Star Citizen mentioned across the gaming and mainstream media; how its broken records, how it shows that people still believe in PC games, how they want to play a space sim, how it is another nail in the coffin of the traditional publisher model.

We hope that you will feel the same way.

Even though a lot of press and commentators are praising our skill in running a campaign, the secret sauce that really made Star Citizen happen was YOUR dedication. Your belief in this game energized us as the days got long. Your desire to play kept us going as we faced technical issues and growing mountains of work to do. The community YOU built made sure WE stayed believers. You made this game your own; big publishers may someday look back at this as the beginning of the end, a day when the players took over the development process and made it their own.

So from all of us at RSI: good work, Citizens!

The Pledge

You've spent the last month pledging for the Star Citizen project with your money, your time and your trust. Now it's time for us to do the same. We've created "The Pledge", a founding document to let you know the standards to which we intend to keep ourselves to and how we will keep you informed and involved in the process over the next two years. You can access The Pledge here.

Grace Period

In the aftermath of some of the craziest 48 hours we've ever experienced it’s become clear that there's a sizable number of people that were unable to pledge, or adjust their pledges due to the difficulties with the RSI site.

As a backer through Kickstarter you didn't have the same issues but we're letting you know that because we don't want to punish our incredible community for issues on our side we have decided to adapt our plans and offer a grace period for all current members of the RSI community.

If you have a membership, regardless of whether you have previously purchased a tier, you will be able to pledge at the current prices at the Roberts Space Industries Pledge Page through this weekend. We will keep the limited add-on ships available through that time for everyone who tried to purchase one but wasn't able. Everything will switch to the new pricing structure on Monday November 26th.

Kickstarter Integration

It takes about 14 days for Kickstarter to resolve any billing issues that may arise from the delayed payment setup through Amazon. We will then send out a survey all 34,397 of you that will ask for details like which add-ons you opted for, you shipping address for physical items (if you pledged for a tier with these) and so on. We will then integrate this into the database at RSI. It is our hope to have everyone integrated as soon as possible, but it depends on people being diligent with their surveys, so please help your fellow kickstarters and us out by quickly answering the survey when you receive it!

In the meantime if you haven't joined as a member please go to the RSI site and enlist to reserve your member name and set up your account which your Kickstarter pledges will be linked to.

Moving Forward

Look for updates from us in the very near future as we go about transitioning the site back to being focused on our community and telling the story of development.

For those of our backers in the USA we wish you a warm Thanksgiving holiday for later this week.

The biggest “Thank you” possible! Chris Roberts and the RSI team.

I understand your point, but I think it was a poor choice of wording in your original post. I'd don't think the point of the game they're trying to make is to perpetuate unnecessary violence against innocent bystanders. However I would agree that you should be able to defend yourself against anything that can attack you, be it a transport full of children, or a space station the size of a small moon.

    2. Agenttrap on

Daniel, after playing fallout new vegas and being chased by a child I could not kill, but could kill me for the 25 hours I would play it afterwards, it gets very annoying that children are all invulnerable gods. Let us not forget Skyrim, where the kids taunt and make fun of you, but you cant kill them. If it exists, let me kill it is what I am saying.

    3. Daniel Henry on

You are the exact kind of person I hope does NOT play SC if you were serious in your comment. Im pretty sure u were joking thankfully :)

I have upped my pledge on the other site in response to RSI's pledge and handling of the last-minute server meltdown. Brings a tear to me eye, it does.

I wonder what I'll do with two fighter-type ships since I'm more of an explorer/trader. I guess I shall heroically explode my lifetime-insured ships against my bemused enemies over and over again until they give up. Sounds like a plan.

    5. Daniel Henry on

Thats a bit worrying. It may be part of real life but that doesnt make it something you should enjoy or want to see. Besides i don't think thats the kind of atmosphere they want to capture in this game. Well at least I hope it isnt.
I would like to see an epic space sim full of epic military Heroes/Ace pilots/Smugglers/Evil Pirates/ and daring Merchants. But without realistic evil acts that would detract from the game's atmosphere that are unnecessary. Like kids dying. For no reason.

I don't know how detailed they are planning on making the on world gameplay, I think what you are asking for maybe out of the scope of the game. If a ship blows up that happened to be carrying children on board maybe, but this is a space sim game not GTA.

Love the pledge. Ladies and Gentlemen, this man gets it.

The power of the system (the big publishers and corporate backers) and the direction the industry seems to be heading is something that a lot of us have observed with more than a little distaste. Yet we feel powerless to do much against it and were resigned to watch it slide.
Chris, your combination of industry credibility and understanding of the fans' perspective is probably unparalleled, and your willingness to do something with it is exhilarating.

Oh, and the game looks AWESOME so far. Rock on.

    8. Agenttrap on

I would like see some children getting killed. It is something that the major publishers quiver in fear about, and it is something that has always pissed me off in games. You don't have to even make the main character kill children, just make it a thing. Murder, rape, extortion, all of these things you can do, and big companies cant. Don't just give me a sim, give me a plausible reality.

      @Rickard Nilsson
When people talk about PC gaming dying, they don't mean no games on PC, they mean a lack of games being produced for PC. Especially games which need the power of a PC.

If we look at the big names in development, their games are predominately built for consoles first, then ported to PC as more of an after thought rather than as the focus. I mean, how many games that came out in the past year weren't designed for consoles first and foremost? Most of the time they barely even change the UI when porting to PC. Companies often target a few notches above the lowest common denominator, and in the gaming world, that means the capabilities of a system. Since consoles are less powerful than most PCs, it's much easier to make a game for them, and then port it to PC. It also usually makes sense business wise, as you can hit a larger audience with less effort.

In the past, console and PC games were also distinctly different with only minimal blurring of the lines, even between consoles. Nowdays they're heavily blurred, with many games coming out on at least 3 of the possible systems, and only the handhelds (and to a lesser extent the Wii) really retaining that old distinction. Very few games that come out on console are have PC colours in them, while many PC games are just console games with a touch a PC added.

When people look at the numbers of F2P players, facebook games are typically counted in there as well. While they are technically PC games, they hardly need anything more than a tablet to run; the power of a PC is wasted on it. Given that half the complaint about console ports is that it's not using the PC's capabilities (the other half being terrible ports), they're not going to fill that void at all. If you cut out those sorts of free to play games, then the F2P field gets a lot smaller, and outweighed by more traditional games. I enjoy a couple of F2P games myself, but most are usually more just to waste time with a bit of fun, compared to traditional games where you're killing a few hours. In the past, that void was filled by the likes of Solitare and Minesweeper. It's still fun, but it's a different kind of fun.

I think its silly of you to write that this is not the end of PC gaming. It is actually growing because of free to play. I enjoy console games more, specifically Nintendo; but I still enjoy PC gaming. I even pledged 250$ so I am certain I will love this game. I think the first paragraph is silly and unnecessary, thats all.

      Hallo RSI team,

Congratulations on your successful fundraiser over 6$ million over all wow, hope this will help you create a wonderful (BUGFREE (as humanly possible) on release Date!) space-sim game. I love Privateer and Wing Command series, also the X-Wing & Tie Fighter games. Hope this will be a great Singleplayer experience. I'm not so into persistent MMO style of games (=EVE), or nice to have multi player add in no one cares about (=ME3), I simply don't need (and don't want) it. Hey maybe it turns out to be a nice extra, but please focus on "the best as can be" single player experience, thx.

I have a request, I just wanted to register my name in your site ( but it won't allow "_" in user a name. That's bad, as you can see my name is "DX_Blaster" and I also want to use it like it is. Please change the user name policy, I understand that in game and multi player, special character are not allowed but as a register name to a user board that's not very practical. Please let me know if you can / will change that thx.

Sorry for my bad English, it's not my native tongue.
      With best regards,

I pledged a physical tier (as the digital only are all lower) and shipping.

Is it possible to remove the physical component (it seems to be for people ordering at your site), and reuse the shipping amount for some extras?

lol Is that Helen Keller's signature? Joking. ;) (ill see you all in hell if you laughed) Glad to see the project's funding. I will look forward to Star Citizen's progress! I'm particularly interested in what kind of interactions can be done in the universe.

    16. twincast ~ Mangy WoOS-DOoD Mage

Heh, that signature looks just like mine (in style, names being different and all) ... I always get complaints about it. :-(

    17. High Admiral Doji on

@Matthew P - If you check around the RSI site, there's actually an item that will let you enter the email address to link with KS (sorry, I don't remember where it is, I did it a week or so ago). What I'm saying is, YOU can actually take control and let KS/RSI which email addresses need to be linked.

Huw Thomas, everyone who pledges before the 26th will be considered to have gotten in on the ground floor.

    22. light487 - Kickstarter Junkie on

@Bryan - Login to Amazon, set up the new card details there first. Then after you have done that, go to the failed payment kickstarter link in the email and click through to Amazon to authorise the payment again.

    23. Huw Thomas on

      From this update:

"Everything will switch to the new pricing structure on Monday November 26th. "

      From the previous update:

"What about pledges? Good news: those of you who got in on the ground floor are covered. Your ships have lifetime insurance policies and for the next year you will have the ability to purchase further tiers or upgrade existing ones at the initial prices. "

I wonder if this can be clarified?

    24. CDSAfghan on

@Bryan Couldn't you pledge through RSI site and use paypal?

    25. Matthew Cason on

Following up a model campaign with something like this ... well ... it validates all the trust and hope I've invested in you guys along with my financial pledge. Thank YOU for showing other developers how this should be done. By enshrining your commitment to the community. We will continue to back you to the hilt now, at release, and long, long after.

Good luck guys, we want this project as much as you do.

Until the vB boards are up many interesting discussions are happening on reddit.

I`ve compiled all the features and rewards we're getting in a simple list:

Also, I'd like to suggest pledgers receive special badges on the vB forums. It's super easy to implement with vBulletin and always a nice touch!

      Cheers and congrats! :)

How do I pay for shipping?

    32. Matthew Peck on

Please make sure that in the KS survey you ask for either our RSI account username or email address. I guarantee you I'm not the only person who uses a different email address on KS and RSI (and, well, *every* site). Please don't make the mistake of assuming that KS and RSI accounts will have matching email addresses :)

    33. JTD121 on

Also, so sorry. If we pledge on both KS and RSI, do they combine on the RSI site? Just curious if the linking of them will bring up a total for whatever tiers they combine into.

I think your doing the right thing. You must have had a lot of traffic. It is good to give those that did not get a chance to pledge a chance to do so. I planed my self to use your site but it was not working so I when with kickstart just to be sure.

    35. JTD121 on

So, only through this weekend we'll be able to do the Centurion/Imperator subscriptions at the current prices, or just the normal pledges and add-ons?

Can't wait for my survey; one step closer!
