$5.4 Million – Spaceport Test Footage!

$5.4 million... that carrier is practically yours! To celebrate, we have a great new video that's hot off the presses. This is a very early test of moving from concept art of a spaceport to a 3D environment. You'll recognize the original concept art... and check out how cool it is to walk around it! Please note the fidelity of the environment and buildings is MUCH lower than what it will be in the actual game and a lot of the background city environment is missing.

Additionally, here are the much-requested Anvil Gladiator specifications:

Builder: Anvil Aerospace

Crew (max): 2

Mass (empty): 30,000 Kg

Focus: Bomber

The T3A Gladiator is the UEE Navy's primary carrier-based bomber. Gladiator squadrons are typically divided by specialty: a carrier may have both a Gladiator torpedo squadron and a Gladiator dive bomber squadron. A back seat is occupied by a tail gunner who also acts as radio operator.

Though a heavy-hitting bomber, the Gladiator has proven easy to modify and thus has become commonplace in the civilian market. The bomb bay can easily be converted for light transport. Many pilots choose to replace the rear turret's laser cannon with a tractor beam, making it an ideal craft for light salvage missions.

Upgrade Capacity: 8

Cargo Capacity: 15 tonnes

Modifiers: 2

Max. Class: Fusion

Thrusters: 1 x TR5, 8 x TR2

3 x Class 1: Equipped 3 x A&R AC-9 Laser Cannon

2 x Class 3: Equipped 2x Dogfish Proton Torpedo (TORP)

1 x Class 4: Equioped 1x A&R AC-7 Laser Cannon (Turret)

I'm rarely persuaded enough to log in to things and post comments but watching that video even by graphics of today's standards it looks fantastic, the rain especially and walking around the Hornet. It's not even remotely finished off yet as they say so once it's finished and that's your ship parked there and you can walk around it will be super awesome, enough to draw me back into a game for the first time in about 10years for sure!

    2. Shepard on November 19, 2012

Man, this is amazing. I am already giddy about these graphics. This is a TRULY NEXT GEN MMO.

Those are necessary for Hydrogen scoop in space since maneuvering thrusters use hydrogen for fuel.

And they are just look cool after all. I guess nerds (nnot saying you are one) will have to pick on every detail and apply scrutiny to every ship and part they see. But in most cases there is no explanation, its just a COOL factor. Take it or leave it.

    3. Ian Perley on November 19, 2012

Oh wow. This is a work in progress? Insane. (In a very good way!)

@Kyuu I'd be interested to hear if you ever get a response to your mature theme inquiry. Probably way too early in the development of SC to know either way, sadly.

Also... I absolutely -love- the rain in the spaceport. Hopefully though, and yes I know this is just a "here's a taste of what we can do" video, but hopefully npc's won't just stand around getting wet and catching colds in the more final version. Futuristic umbrellas for everyone? lol. Just a tiny pet peeve of mine. :)

    4. Porcupine on November 19, 2012

It seems I'd better get my affairs in order - 'cause once this game is out, nobody will see much of me in the real world. I guess the good news is I have two whole years to do it...

    5. Ellios on November 19, 2012

      @Hiekkaa: It's for atmospheric flight.

I'd just like to state for the record that I would pay $30 just to have the spaceport walk around. Talk about beautiful.

    6. Kyuu on November 19, 2012

A little late to the party, that was talked about a lot after the first video. I believe Chris's answer was something to the effect of: ram scoop, atmospheric flight (even if you can't actually do atmospheric flight to start with), and aesthetics.

    7. Hiekkaa on November 19, 2012

Why does a spaceship have a front mounted radiator with cooling fans?

    8. Jason Teeple on November 19, 2012

Danm it raining.... Must of been a bad day to film this....oooo

    9. Aaron Labertew on November 19, 2012

Much lower fidelity, and it STILL looks damned amazing!

would love to see a mission where we get to be a detective and help out a femme fatale in Star Citizen :)

    12. Valentine on November 19, 2012

Congratulations Chris! You guys did it!
      This is so exciting :)

Chris and the rest of the Dev team - you guys are AWESOME!!!

      well done!

      we're all pushing for you!

Colour me impressed by that video (and in retrospect, the earlier one showing battle too, actually).

I've played games that looked far far worse than what you are showing us in that video which you state is a WIP. Really goes to show how much 'console dedication' is holding back most development teams when making games. o.O

      @Jonathan Hertman

that ship is just placeholder, some "default" model they bought from internet

Dont have a link to it, but I read it somewhere on the forums.
Also if you follow the live chat its been mentioned there as well.
Feel free to ask the team if you want confirmation.

    21. Kyuu on November 19, 2012

Any ship you get as a pledge has lifetime insurance. So if it gets blown up, you get a brand new one free of charge. Of course, you still lose any customizations and upgrades you might have put into it.

    22. Missing avatar

      Bnethor on November 19, 2012

I don't think I've noticed this answered in the faq or anywhere.. One can most likely lose their ship, so is that the case with the pledge ships as well?

    23. Dadalos on November 19, 2012

stellar. completely matches and exceeds my expectations...and this is a WIP and your sorry about the quality!?! this as is leaves me spamming the refresh key to see what you show us next XD. needless to say we all look forward to walking those ports for ourselves XD.

    24. Stargazer on November 19, 2012

Aww. Oh well! Thanks for clearing it up anyway.

Source for that fact? Just curious.

      @ Jonathan Hertman
Hmmm, I'm not sure - I'm not getting the "as much style as possible" and "luxury spacecraft like no other" from that model. Could be right though: it does seem to only have 2 guns, which fits with the specs of both the Origin M50 & 300i (definitely not 300i - "sleek, silver killer").

      Bansheedragon on November 19, 2012

      @ Stargazer.
Then I have to disappoint you.
That ship is only a place holder.
That much they have been clear about.

    28. Kyuu on November 19, 2012

Oh, as far as the spaceport goes, all I can say is: *jaw-drop*

Speaking of that bar advertisement with the silhouette of a sultry woman: what kind of "mature" themes can we expect in terms of sexuality and violence? Will there be bar vixens? Blood and/or gore for out-of-ship combat? I'm not making a position one way or the other, I'm just curious about the development team's position.

    29. Stargazer on November 19, 2012

I hope it's not just a placeholder, because I for one really, really want it in my garage. ;-)

    30. Jonathan Hertman on November 19, 2012

After reading some ship specs, I believe the red ship might just be the ORIGIN M50. The weapons and trusters fit, plus it really looks like a racer to me :P

    31. Kyuu on November 19, 2012

@ Michael523: Nope, spaceports and the like will be areas you can actually walk around in, in addition to the insides of ships (asides from 1 seater fighters of course).

@Stargazer it is not if you read Gladiators description closely (rear turrets, backseat for a gunner)

    33. Andrew Gibbons on November 19, 2012

      Incredible!!! .. just ... WOW!

    34. Darkk on November 19, 2012

@stargazer: It depends mainly on the stability of the rsi-page I guess ;)

      Bansheedragon on November 19, 2012

      @ Stargazer
That red ship is only a placeholder.
It will be replaced by the actual ship at a later point in time.

I'm impressed by that video, it looks good so far, looking forward to seeing the finished work.
I also notiuced the rain, making me think that weather effects are important too for realism and immersion.

      michaelt523 on November 19, 2012

Does this mean we can walk around in these areas on planets? I thought it was just going to be a menu

    37. Stargazer on November 19, 2012

I take it that red, sleek, awesome ship is the Gladiator?

      on November 19, 2012

Just amazing. Whenever I think I couldn't get more chuffed for this game, you guys one up me!
Would love to know what ship that crescent shaped red model represents..?

    41. Jonathan Hertman on November 19, 2012

Anyone has any idea what model that lovely red ship is? I recognize the Hornet next to it, but I have no idea about that other one...

    42. Stargazer on November 19, 2012

Woah! Spaceport looks mighty impressive already! :-O

And 5.4M! No doubt we'll get to six million the way this is going, the question is... Can we reach seven?

    43. Jonathan Ashford on November 19, 2012

Thanks guys, that spaceport looks lovely. Rain, grime, and a bit of sleaziness - great work on the atmosphere here. Keep it up!

    44. Missing avatar

      LunacyIsFun on November 19, 2012

Wow, I was actually doubting we would reach 5.5 million, but now it looks like we may even get up to 6 million! Amazing work on the environment as well, it looks great even in a concept stage :D

    45. Liondrome on November 19, 2012

Could someone at RSI make a statement/update about bronze & silver citizenship cards.

Would like to see official statement that will the bronze & silver citizenship cards be from real metal as gold & above. Since some official word would be nice.

    46. Socrates on November 19, 2012

Orchestral score! Please god tell us about the music and the 6 million stretch goal of an orchestral score!
