Posted by Cloud Imperium Games Corporation (Creator)

Pirate Ships

Big news: we've added a special tier and add-on to appeal to players who'd like to start the game as a pirate! You can now add a Drake Cutlass fighter to your existing pledge or you can pick up a new copy of Star Citizen that includes the Cutlass. The package includes a tractor beam and a docking collar so you can start raiding commerce right off the bat! And if you live outside the law, you must look awesome: we also have two $5 pirate skin options, which you can preview right here on the Cutlass! You can pick them up here on RSI or by adding the appropriate funds to your Kickstarter pledge. This package is available only through the end of the pledge drive, so if you'd like a Cutlass with free lifetime insurance, pick it up now!

Subscriptions

Over the past month we’ve had a lot of requests from users who simply want to support the game. Some can’t afford to spend $250 on a higher pledge tier right now but would like to help out every month for a small amount. Then there are those that have already backed for a good amount but believe so strongly in the project that they want help make sure we can deliver as much content and functionality as possible by adding a monthly contribution. We’re honored and humbled by this.

We welcome the support as every extra dollar allows us to flesh out the world with more ships, locations and features. If just 10% of the community helps out in this manner, we would be able to afford 6 additional team members. This would mean more artists to build ships and systems, game designers to flesh out missions and an additional person or two to service the community more effectively.

But we needed to sit back and figure out how to do this in a way that doesn’t violate our core principals. To that end, we want to make clear that there will NEVER be a subscription needed to play Star Citizen. Once you have backed you should not be have to spend extra money to play the game. Similarly, Star Citizen will never be ‘pay to win,’ so we are not going to offer a subscription plan that gives some users special equipment or additional money or any kind of edge in combat. We feel strongly that everything that affects gameplay can be earned in game via your actions.

The only thing left is telling our story: letting you follow the development of the game. But here’s the thing: we’re already doing that. It was part of the promise we made when you pledged for your copy of Star Citizen in the first place and, again, we aren’t going to change any of our plans because it might mean more money. If you’ve paid for the game, everything at the site is yours for the next two years: the Comm-Link, the Spectrum Dispatches, the RSI Museum, the forums and the live chat… as is everything we haven’t rolled out yet, but will: engineering updates about the game mechanics, “holovids” of the gameplay as it takes shape, access to the Alpha and Beta and much more.

Instead, we’ve created an extra set of rewards and ways to follow our development for interested subscribers, divided into two levels: Centurion ($10/month) and Imperator ($20/month.) These are things that we’re confident we wouldn’t have done without the extra money and the time it allows us. Here’s the rundown:

Centurion:

  • The ability to participate in the live monthly team “show and tell.” We will answer twenty questions from subscribers (selected via voting system.) Subscribers will watch the update live as it is being recorded.
  • Jump Point, the monthly digital magazine of Star Citizen. A 4-6 page monthly newsletter which includes updates from the team and new in-universe Star Citizen fiction from the writing team.
  • Access to “The Vault,” a collection of Star Citizen artwork that would otherwise never be seen, including ‘paths not taken’ discarded concept art for the true collector.
  • An exclusive catalog of Star Citizen subscriber merchandise.
  • Your name in the game. We can’t tell you where you’ll find it, but if you subscribe for at least 12 months your name will be located somewhere in the Star Citizen world!
  • Centurion decal for your ship
Imperator:
  • Everything listed above, plus…
  • Visit Cloud Imperium and see how the game is made! Imperator-level subscribers will be allowed one visit per year (scheduled in advance) to the Star Citizen development offices in Austin or Los Angeles.
  • Three wishes – Chris Roberts will personally reply to three of your questions a year.
  • Your name on the wall-of-honor at Cloud Imperium HQ if you subscribe for at least 12 months.
  • Jump Point: Year One, a printed collection of Jump Point issues provided to anyone who subscribes for the entire first year of development.
  • Imperator decal for your Ship.
We’re excited about making these two development subscriptions available immediately, but once again our ambitions are a little bit ahead of our site’s capabilities. As such, we’re asking interested subscribers to purchase the Centurion or Imperator pledge from our main page. This will bill you for the first month. Once the crowd funding phase has ended we will then spend the time needed to properly implement a recurring charge through all our supported payment methods, which we will have up and running in time for your second month’s subscription payment.

We are eternally grateful for all the amazing support you’ve given us so far and we don’t expect any more from any of you. This is completely optional and is all about your desire to see that Star Citizen is the richest game possible from the outset.

How will subscriptions be accounted for in the financing goal? Can we get the anual value rolled into the funding targets ($20.00 a month gets us $240.00 of funding credit)

@zzzopiklon Thank you for the info. I will go ahead and get the pack!

VashTS: "Does flying in a drake class fighter automatically labels you as a pirate?"

      Highly unlikely, judging by this:
"The larger-than-average cargo hold, RIO seat and dedicated tractor mount are, the company literature insists, for facilitating search and rescue operations. While it's true that Cutlasses are used throughout known space for such missions, their prime task and immediate association is with high space piracy. "

I think you'll be able to use the ship for whatever purpose, and that it's your actions that determine whether you're viewed as a law abiding citizen or a criminal.

    6. Frank Fiol on

I'm confused on something. Are the blueprints included in some pledge levels physical things to enjoy in my house, or are they a digital good, allowing me to make a ship in game?

      Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know how hard it'll be to get a Cutlass ship in game? I guess it'll be from hidden Pirate bases in asteroid fields etc.

Just wondering if its worth me upgrading to the Pirate package :)

    8. Porcupine on

Not exactly on-topic but hey, maybe it'll lighten the mood - thinking of skins I just had the utterly ridiculous vision of a luxury cruiser floating past the camera, with huge letters on its side: "OPPAN GANGNAM STYLE"... ;)

    9. Kristian Hållstrand on

      @ Raven Daegmorgan
You can get this by registering an account (it's free) at the RSI site
      http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/
(it's on the right side Reserve your ship -> Learn More -> end of list "Grab your Add-ons"
      https://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/add-ons/
Here you can do extensive customization with both physical and digital goods, and they will all be combined with your kickstarter pledge, so mix and match to your hearts content!
To me it seems that the physical packages at kickstarter contain more stuff, so personally I started from there and topped up with extra ships on the RSI site.
      As BigNick277 pointed out:
"if you've ever played a game like this, Eve, X3, you'd know without it having to explain it to you, that these types of games require multiple ships and types of ships to fulfill specific roles when played in multiplayer."

@Fahad yes, I have the same question.

So I have been reading through the update, and looking through the main site info. I have been trying to figure out the Drake class ship, by that I mean it looks bad ass, and I want one. The thing is I can't seem to find a clear cut answer on a question I had. Does flying in a drake class fighter automatically labels you as a pirate? Or this goes back to your actions?

I personally did the Rear Admiral pledge for the Constellation class ship, and I have been looking for ways to increase my pledge in a way that benefits the game (in terms of pledges), and fits my needs. I believe the Cutlass would make a fine addition to the Constellation ship.

    13. Stormfury on

@Brian - Yeah, I guess it depends on who you're rolling with. I figure I can assist my Cutlass buddies either in my Freelancer or Hornet. :) Tough decision as I want all 3!

@Shrike Thanks for the pointer. You end up trading off quite a bit (vs the Hornet / Freelancer) for the extra cargo capacity and the pirate upgrades. This will require more consideration.

I'd like to echo the need for the Cutlass stats. The idea of being a pirate is really intriguing, but I'd like to know what my money is buying before putting it in.

    17. Stormfury on

      @Keeper32 LOL! I know right?

Was struggling to decide if I could afford the Hornet in addition to the Freelancer. Now darnit, I want the Hornet, Cutless and Freelancer... Not enough Money.....

Anyone know how it works with regards to characters/accounts? Like do you have 1 character per account (ie Good or Bad) or can you have multiple characters?

Just curious if I need to have 2 accounts for different ships or if I can have 1.

    18. JTD121 on

Right, but will it 'stack' on our original pledge (like the example I gave in my earlier comment), and how long after the KS/RSI pledging is over, will we be able to 'subscribe'? A week, a month? Those are my main questions.

    19. Missing avatar

      Bansheedragon on

      @ ilves
Yes it can be bought later, but only ingame.
You just cannot buy it with real cash like now.

    20. JTD121 on

Also, would this be 'linked' to the RSI accounts, and sort of 'add onto' the pledge amount we selected originally? So the $240 from the year of Imperator + the Colonel (my pledge) would equal $365? Can that be done somehow? I'd gladly fork over monthly for it, I just can't do it all at once, unfortunately. I REALLY like the idea of a Jump Point: Year One in my hands, as a thing :-D

    21. Missing avatar

      Kirill on

@Atarun Well, then I want a pirate card, damn it! lol. I decided I'm gonna sleep on it and see what all kind of ships will be out by tomorrow.

      ilves on

So the pirate ship can't be bought later, but you can upgrade to other ships later if you've at least bought a low level ship?

    23. JTD121 on

So this subscription thing starts immediately? I would love to do the Imperator one, but as-is I am tapped with my current pledge level on Kickstarter. Is there a 'grace period' after the end of the funding? I assume this will still be on the RSI site afterwards, too?

    24. Corpselocker on

Eargh, give me the stats on the Drake Cutlass! I don't want to drop $100 without seeing the raw data. I will pay, but feeeeeed me!

    25. ShinKagato on

Couldnt resist, changed my pledge to a Bounty Hunter (i really want a citizan card lol), added on the Pirate pack with that awesome black skull and cross bones skin and signed up for a sub. Though its only a small amount extra i managed to get more ingame goodies at the expense of the physical goods. So glad they allowed a certain amount of mix and match with the ships and tiers, cant wait for the alpha now...

    26. Will Lowe on

I really do hate the odd mentality that pops up when people are trying to improve something via a financial service customers desire.

Granted, those at higher paid tiers may get miffed at new incentives; but you have paid for what was on offer.

As stated above, this new sub is to hire 6 more members of staff, which enables:

      More content
      Faster Development time
Which will result in a fuller game which should be completed quicker.

I fail to see the downside.

It truly baffles me how people can so easily misunderstand everything that is being said and jump to conclusions based on nothing but their misconceptions.
If I didnt know better I would say they dont want to understand what is actually being said and t hat they would not be happy if they didnt have something to complain about.
Trying to explain things seems a waste of time since these people have already made up their mind and nothing anybody says will change that.

I for one are thinking of getting the Imperator sub, if nothing else then just to help make this game even better, and I already pledged $550 ($500 at RSI and $50 at KS)
But a chance to visit one of their studios and see first hand what they are doing would be great.
This game is gonna be great, no question about it.

    29. krayzkrok on

Micartu, all the free stuff we're getting as backers isn't being locked away behind these subscriptions. Didn't you read the text? It's there in black and white. This is additional material as an incentive for those who want to pledge more, but don't have a lump sum available right now.

If you can't find the text amidst all those paragraphs, it's here: "If you’ve paid for the game, everything at the site is yours for the next two years: the Comm-Link, the Spectrum Dispatches, the RSI Museum, the forums and the live chat… as is everything we haven’t rolled out yet, but will: engineering updates about the game mechanics, “holovids” of the gameplay as it takes shape, access to the Alpha and Beta and much more."

    30. ShinKagato on

Are people really upset over the subs? You realise that every free to play game has a subscription model designed for those who just want some option extras right? Nothing that will make them better than you, but nice cosmetic things that are thanks for supporting the game. Please dont drop your pledge because you feel you are being made a second class citizen, it just isnt the case.

    31. Micartu on

i'm talking about the subscription for the news, novels, ecc, all stuff that until now was free. i don't have anything against digital addons, i think that make people pay to be informed about developements and novels etc. isn't correct if this people pledged more than 100dollars.

    32. Kyuu on

      Oh, and @Micartu:

You're getting exactly the same level of access as everyone else. The subscriptions simply give a level of access which it was explicitly stated *would not be possible without the revenue from those subscriptions*. Nothing has been taken from you, so I'm not sure why suddenly what you were getting with your pledge is suddenly inadequate.

    33. Atarun
      Superbacker
      on

@Kirill: you can't be a pirate and have a citizen card, duh. ;p

    34. Kyuu on

Wow, people need to take a breather. They put in a subscription for people who have been asking for one, which is completely optional and has no game play repercussions whatsoever, and people complain? Gimme a break.

And for everyone who obviously has not been paying attention: you get *nothing* from pledges that can't be obtained in-game. Except maybe the cosmetic skins.

And yes, they are trying to make money. They need money to make the game. What in the world do you people want?

    35. Atarun
      Superbacker
      on

@Micartu: would you feel so cheated if the Centurion was a $120 add-on and the Imperator a $240 one? Or if they were regular exclusive (as in not included in higher levels) pledge levels?

    36. ShinKagato on

God damn it! Now i dont know if i should switch from the Hornet to the Cutlass or stay where i am......its an amazing looking ship! Maybe ill sleep on it for now, ill pay for a sub if it keeps the game going too, may never use the extra stuff but i like having the option to.

    37. Micartu on

@bignick277: Alex Valero Danda is correct. until now i pledged about 200 dollars, so i guess that i've collected the "right" to be FULLY informed about the game without pay a subsciption, it's not like i've pledged 5-15 dollars, i'm talking about 200 dollars! tomorrow when i wake up, i'll reduce my pledge for sure.

    38. Missing avatar

      BigNick277 on

@Alex Valero "Danda" - Did you even read the press release.

      1. This is not a game subscription
      2. This is not pay to win
      3. This is only a newletter subscription for people who "want" to contribute monthly, but they have to accept that they are getting nothing beneficial within the game for it. They get newsletters, access to some development resources and get to ask questions directly to the developers... That's it.
      4. Again they only put this option up because a certain select few have been asking for a subscription.
      5. RSI has basically told them No, but if you really want to keep contributing towards the game on a monthly basis, then here is what we will do for you.

Read the whole thing and make sure you understand the material before you make grandiose claims that are flat out wrong and unsubstantiated. All you've accomplished now is spread misinformation and cause fear mongering for no reason.

      As for your other comment:

"it's not pay-to-win, but pay more to get better ships"

Again no, this only impacts your starting ship and that you get lifetime insurance on the ship. Not anything you attach to it later. Also, every ship in the game, can be got in game the old fashioned way. They have been explicit about this from the very beginning. There will be no exclusive ships to pledgers that can't be gotten in game. So no, this is not a pay to win. Also, if you've ever played a game like this, Eve, X3, you'd know without it having to explain it to you, that these types of games require multiple ships and types of ships to fulfill specific roles when played in multiplayer. Again, stop spreading misinformation.

      Its getting a bit confusing.

    41. Alex Valero "Danda" on

This is the "we found a way to milk even more money out of this" update.

I've actually downgraded my pledge to the minimum. There's too much of "it's not pay-to-win, but pay more to get better ships", and too much of "you don't need a subscription, but here's a subscription if you want it anyway". This update just went past my patience threshold, and now I just want to play the game.

Nice! I'm in for the Imperator subscription. Go CR! Not sure if I want to be a porate, but bring on the new pledges. I'll take a Bengal Carrrier for $200, please! lol

Appreciate the thought you guys put into the subscriptions, great benefits without affecting the game. Might spring for the Imperator. Gotta think about it :) Ship looks great too. Look forward to seeing what else you add!

    46. Jos Ewert on

Keenan, I would like to point your attention to update 40: " Every single additional ship we offer for sale in the next 48 hours will never be sold for cash again… but they will be available through gameplay." as one example that everything will be available through gameplay.

      Kirill on

Ugh! I am SO tempted to get the pirate package, but if I upgrade, I lose my physical citizen card. If I add the $100 pirate pack to my current reward then I am basically paying an extra $20 just for the card. Arg!!

    48. Roland on

@Keenan It had been said repeatedly, all ships you pledge here can be obtained in game using normal means.

    49. Keenan Sneddon on

I hope all this stuff is in the game and your not permenantly locked out if you didnt get it. i want to be able to work towards this stuff, not just pledgers only. otherwise his whole "Not pay to win" is bullshit
