A Note from Chris Roberts

Hello everyone!

Less than two weeks ago, I reached out to the gaming community to help me prove that the PC game wasn’t dead. That there was still an audience for the kind of games I created with Wing Commander and Freelancer. To prove that Space Combat wasn’t finished as a genre

I hoped that the answer would be yes, that the demand would be there and that it would come together in a way that would ultimately let me build the world I have been dreaming about for many years.

What I didn’t expect was how quickly it all happened.

Last night, just four and half days after our Kickstarter campaign launched, we passed the $500,000 mark, making it successfully funded, and another Kickstarter success story.

As I write this we are less than $50,000 from reaching the RSI goal of $2 million in overall pledges that makes Star Citizen a “go”. It’s unbelievable.

I’m proud to represent this cause and I’m tremendously humbled by the incredible community that has rallied to my side. Not just the donations–which have been astounding –but also the stories and the creativity I’ve encountered interacting with you in the comments and on the message boards and elsewhere. Like me, you have all seen Star Citizen, no matter what you may have called it, in your head for many years… and thanks to your collected efforts; I’m going to build it for you.

I have two pieces of information to share with you tonight. The first is the long-awaited design document about Star Citizens five pledge ships. Time and time again you’ve asked what an Aurora or a Hornet or a Constellation is. I’m happy now to be able to share our design concepts. These are the specifications we’re building on as we create the game world and they’re the descriptions I have sent to the artists who are putting together the ship models. Normally you wouldn’t see this kind of inside information, especially not this early, but I hope you will find it interesting and get a kick out of getting an insider’s view of how game development works.

The second piece of news is the news that you can finally upgrade your pledges at If you’ve decided you would like to upgrade to a higher tier of ship or if you would like to increase your support for the project for any other reason, you now have that option. In addition we have heard you loud and clear on the Forums, on Kickstarter, Facebook and on the recent poll. You want the ability to add additional ships to your base package. So we’ve given you that option too. I hope you’ll enjoy seeing our plans for these ships and then choosing the one that best fits how you want to play the game.

Tomorrow, we’re going to be adding additional information about stretch goals… more specific levels and in-game rewards that you can achieve. The first goal is $750,000 on Kickstarter, at which point every backer will get a Class I Repair Bot when they start the game. In the near future we will have the upgraded forums online and we will start opening additional content at the RSI website. There’s a lot to look forward to!

So, pilots: we’ve won our first furball! But, there’s plenty more work to do. Let’s knock out the $2M in overall pledges that green lights Star Citizen, then set our sights on the stretch goals. The more of these we can hit, the richer and more varied the game I can deliver. We’re less than half way through the campaign, so I know we can go much further. If you’ve already backed, spread the word. If you’re still waiting to, then please join the cause.

Thank you, truly, for your unbelievable support. We have $45,840 to go! We can get there by MORNING!

Chris Roberts

@Richard Crockett: Thanks very much for the answer, much appreciated!

    2. Creator Richard Crockett on October 26, 2012

@Mike Davis: The short answer is no. The explanation as I've understood it is the "Hanger" on the Constellation is more of a Docking Station than an actual hanger. The ship comes with a small "Snub Fighter" that is specifically designed for this port. Think more along the lines of the Captain's Yacht from Star Trek than an actual Hanger you can park a full sized Fighter Craft in.

    3. Creator Mike Davis on October 26, 2012

I apologize if this has already been asked (I did some looking around but couldn't find it if it had), but it could be a deciding factor in increasing/upgrading my pledge:

Will it be possible to hangar my AA Hornet on a RSI Constellation?

    4. Creator Andreas on October 26, 2012

@Christian Schaller: yes, the maths were a bit on the risky side: they were at around $1.2 Millions on the web page when the Kickstarter project was launched, which leaves a $300k gap there. However, I guess that they correctly thought that it's extremely unlikely that the pledges on their site just stop at that point. I don't know what I would have done, KS isn't designed for this kind of dual-source funding.

    5. Creator Christian Schaller on October 26, 2012

Huh? This update doesn't make sense to me. How could the Kickstarter have reached its funding level yet the total money available be less than the required 2 Million needed to greenlight the game? The point is a bit moot now as I see from other comments that the 2 Million threshold was reached, but to me it seems you set this up in a way where it was technically possible for the Kickstarter to reach its funding requirement, but the game still not being made. The honest thing would have been to made the Kickstarter at the amount it needed to be to fund the project even if you got zero further funding from your own page. The fact that you didn't do this is because the amounts in question seemed small enough anyway to make success likely, so if the Kickstarter had been at 600 instead of 500 this wouldn't have been an issue.

That said I am not cancelling my pledge, I just think this was a bit beneath the level of ethics I would be hoping for from you.

    6. Creator EOPE42 on October 25, 2012

Congratulations! If I had a dollar for the number of times I've heard people want an update to Freelancer/Privateer etc etc... Blinking in disbelief that it might finally be happening. :)

    7. Creator Ivan Malyushytskyy on October 25, 2012

You know what I think no one mentioned and I think it's because people make an assumption about this:

Will we be able to have either multiple characters or multiple ships ...for example I want to sometimes shoot stuff, or play a trader...but if I'm playing it I don't want to do it on a ship that "Can do both but neither all that well" .

Hope it's clear what I'm asking.

    8. Creator Joe Kent on October 25, 2012

I'm loving this game more & more..

    9. Creator Boris on October 25, 2012

thanks for the RSI pledge updates. thanks for the skill update for kickstarter donators on RSI
      thanks for a new hope

I think the upgrade system is somewhat strange and a bit greedy.
Don't get me wrong I really like Star Citizen but I think we can rise more money with another system.

I have actual the “come fly with me package” (250 $).
If I want to add the Hornet I have to add 110 $.

But If I instead pledge additional 125 $ an add the “wingnut” tier to my exisiting “come fly with me package” I pay only 15 $ more but I additional receive:
      - additional copy of the game
      - Squadron 42 Manual.

      My proposal:
      - the hardback bound manual of the respective ship package should be included
Example: If I pay additional 110$ to get the Hornet I receive in addition the Squadron 42 Manual

Note: the upgrade system (add ship to your basic pledge tier) is only available via

    11. Creator archdruid on October 25, 2012

Sounds good, when will to options available on kickstarter. And will there be a chance player could fly larger ships like frigattes or cruiser ?! Can't wait to see more of the gameengine :D

Great news - time to put the pedal to the metal.

    13. Creator Tomasz Gruca on October 25, 2012

A note to Chris/RSI on the design documents. Kilogram units are abbreviated in a few different ways in the document (i.e. kg, KG, Kg). Because the SI symbol for the multiple of a thousand is lowercase 'k,' the correct symbol of kilogram unit is 'kg.' Only symbols of prefixes larger than 10^3 are uppercase. As it's a space and science game, I figured the science part is important ;-)

    14. Creator CrazedHatter - OO's Lunatic in a Hat on October 25, 2012

We passed 2 mil Chris, just in the last 20 minutes or so.

I love the design document SO FREAKING MUCH. Now, that being said, how long until the 3D models? (We're insatiable you know)

    17. Creator Anders T.N on October 25, 2012

      Thank you Chris & CO
Will the extra ship add-on's come to Kickstarter as well as the RSI site?
I don't have an account there. Pledge goals as well should be posted on Kickstarter site so the users (many of whom have never visited the RSI site) can find the goals immediately. I feel that this was one of the major selling points of the Planetary Annihilation campaign. The information on Kickstarter, Facebook and their homepage was always in sync.

    18. Creator Ken Varley on October 25, 2012

      Thank you Chris.

Thank you for having the balls to bring this genre back. Showing what the PC can do. Most of all, showing the gamers, publishers and the world, that there's more to gaming than standard run of the mill 1st person shooters :D

      Chris "Melt my PC!" :D

awesooooooome!!!!!! woooot! also as a German backer and Origins fan I love the ORIGIN JUMPWORKS GmbH, great!

    21. Creator Jebe on October 25, 2012

      @Louis Stephen Carrozzi,

They do have stretch goals, they just are not presented on the KickStarter page. You will need to visit their own website, , and then click on the "Stretch Goals" button in the upper right fundraising box to reveal what the stretch goals are.

I believe they are currently working on fleshing out additional details for the stretch goals and they so they will likely be getting updated in the coming days.

    22. Creator Corvyn |--SotA Citizen--| on October 25, 2012

Thanks Chris! I really like that you didn't jsut upload the ships specs but the whole concept doc (more or less). It's really interesting to read :)

With this and the upcoming concept art and stretch goals we might even come close to break the record set by Project Eternity (overall - KS+RSI site).

    23. Creator Louis Stephen Carrozzi on October 25, 2012

I figured there would be more milestones beyond the initial $500k. I can thrown down some more cash at the beginning of next month, well before this run as has ended. The potential for this game is great, and it's awesome to see someone with previous game design experience taking it on. I mean, what space gamer doesn't know about Wing Commander? I was a Starflight II guy myself, but space is cool any way you play it. Just a note: I was the main Mission Designer on the PC game "Far Gate" (google it) and I also got a music credit. If you find a need for some more "spacy music", drop me a line. Willing to work on a donation basis, in return for a credit, if any material is used. Thanks!

Congradulations on your successful kick starter campaign and fundraising. Do you have a military consultant? Not to say you wouldn't do a great job with the military culture aspect in Squadron 23 but a consultant could give you a few rare insights that would make immersion that much better.

    26. Creator Ron Au on October 25, 2012

      So darn happy.

An idea I read on the forums by the way, was for you to release a runnable tech demo of the product. It wouldn't even need to have any gameplay. It could just be an in-engine cutscene or a 360-rotatateble view of one ship.

It's undeniable and obvious that releasing something like that would make pledges rocket through the roof. That's the kind of stuff that gaming sites and tech hardware site share around. I've seen a lot of Kickstarter campaigns and one thing that always holds true is that publicity, product teasing and getting hands-on (or eyes-on) samples are what make them successful.

    27. Creator Lorenz Jugel on October 25, 2012

I wouldn't say no to one more ship in my future hangar... Or two. Or three. Very nice.

I wonder how I should go about this, though. Is there a way to link my Kickstarter pledge to my RSi login that I am not aware of?

    28. Creator Monty on October 25, 2012

      Brilliant !

    29. Creator Mark Anthony Huerta on October 25, 2012

Is there a way to have two separate pledge amounts? I added five dollars to my original pledge so that I could get the electro skin but can't figure out whether I need to change the reward or leave it as is? If anyone has an answer that'd be fantastic!

    30. Creator giant_snark on October 25, 2012

Will the stretch goals apply to the total amount raised between KS and RSI, or only the KS amount like you suggested?

    31. Creator andrvas on October 25, 2012

I want a Hornet for xmas

    32. Creator Joshua Ouille on October 25, 2012
