Back SotA, Get a Crossbow in Star Citizen!

Posted by Cloud Imperium Games Corporation (Creator)

Attention Citizens,

Breaking news! You heard earlier today that Richard Garriott’s Shroud of the Avatar will feature an item designed by Chris Roberts useable in-game… and we’ve decided to return the favor! If you back both Star Citizen and Shroud of the Avatar at the $40 Adventurer level or higher, we’ll give your pilot in Star Citizen a powerful crossbow straight out of Richard’s new world… perfect for providing an extra-lethal punch during boarding actions. The Shroud of the Avatar Kickstarter campaign ends in just twelve hours, so make your pledge NOW!

If you would like to pledge via Paypal you can do so here.

Weapon Description:

Iolo Industries Armor-Piercing Crossbow

Some things never go out of style, and the Iolo Crossbow is proof: an elegant weapon that has proved itself capable of repelling boarders effectively time and again over the centuries. It stands well above laser sidearms in terms of armor penetration, the ideal weapon for anyone needing to blast through two inches of plasteel space armor. Designed and hanf-crafted by David Watson, these rare crossbows are prized by pilots for their reliability and their low level of required maintenance. This weapon is an exact replica of the one created for Richard “Lord British” Garriott’s Shroud of the Avatar so you can arm your character with it in both universes!

Damage: 2 cm / bolt (+3 against armor)

Reload: .5 seconds

Effective Range: 500 meters

UEE Restriction: RED

Citizen Card Update / Pledge Linking

Posted by Cloud Imperium Games Corporation (Creator)

Greetings, Citizens,

This Friday, February 15, is your LAST CHANCE to sign up for your customized Citizen Card! Please visit the Roberts Space Industries website and click on the red Shipping Information box in your My Account section to access the shipping form. The cards are going into production very soon and we need everyone’s information now in order to create custom cards featuring your preferred name! If you do not fill out the shipping form by Friday, your card will no longer be unique - so don't delay, get your card now!

If you have not created a Roberts Space Industries account, check your e-mail today! New messages went out this morning to all unlinked Kickstarter backers. These e-mails contain a custom link which can be used to import your Kickstarter pledge to the RSI system, allowing you to sign up for your customized Citizen Card. Your linking message will have been sent to the e-mail you have registered with Kickstarter. If it is not in your inbox, check your spam folder. The subject is “Register your Pledges to Star Citizen.”

For more information, please see the Citizen Card FAQ.

Please note that we are currently working through e-mail support requests regarding Citizen Cards. As long as you have contacted we will get to you and you will receive your custom card, regardless of the deadline. Because of the volume, this may take several days; there is no need to send a follow-up message. If you have been having an issue with the form or would like to change/upgrade your status, please try again: we’ve rolled out an enhanced version that allows for further changes today!

We’ve had several requests in recent days to upgrade the bronze and silver level cards from plastic to metal. We’ve investigated this and it is possible for a limited fee - only if there is enough interest for a full production run and to cover manual labor cost of fulfillment. This would also create a delay in delivery date. As such, we’ve decided to poll the community. If you are expecting a bronze or silver card or you would upgrade for this, please fill in the poll at Roberts Space Industries.

Citizen Card & T-Shirt FAQs

Posted by Cloud Imperium Games Corporation (Creator)

We’re excited to announce that we’re almost ready to begin production on the Citizens Cards! We’re now collecting your shipping information so we can get these cool collectibles into your hands. Take a moment to read the FAQ below, then if you’re eligible for a card head on over to and hit the large red shipping box to begin the process!

My Citizen Card Note: This is a mock-up of our Gold Citizen card made from solid brushed metal for our Vice Admirals!

Why own a citizen card?

Your citizen card is a memento for you, with your Unique ID# and chosen name. They are a tribute to your contribution to make Star Citizen possible. Cards are being made now as a one-off production because the foundation for this game can only be laid once in history and you all blew it out of the stratosphere with a record breaking crowdfund!

How do I know which card I qualify for?

The shipping form will calculate your aggregate (total) pledge amount and show your current card level before you submit it. Please look in your account page and you will see a big red box titled ‘Shipping Information’ to click on. (Please note: if you are ‘digital only’, there will be NO big red box). T-shirts, add-on ships, manuals, novellas, credits, one-year upfront subscriptions and any subscription pledges paid up until Feb 15th count. We are unable to include subscription pledges ahead of time as we have no way of knowing when you may cancel.

What if I have digital only pledges and now want to opt in for a citizen card?

Please send an email to

What if I would like my card shipped later or no longer want it?

Just do not fill in your shipping form.

Does gifting reduce my aggregate/total pledge and hence citizen card level?

Yes. Once the gift has left your basket it is no longer counted towards your total. If you were Mr. or Mrs. Generous and gifted out like Santa thus significantly reducing your total and now unhappy about this, please contact and we can search manually for your pledging history.

What are the card levels?

White – Scout – $30-$59
Green – Bounty Hunter- $60-$124
Bronze – Freelancer or Colonel – $125-$249
Silver – Rear Admiral $250-$499
Gold – Vice Admiral $500-$999
Platinum – High Admiral, Grand Admiral $1000-2499, $2500-$4999
Black – Space Marshal or Lt Commander $5000-$9999
Titanium – WING COMMANDER $10K+

What are the cards made of?

Gold, Platinum, Black and Titanium Cards will all be made from solid brushed metal and samples look awesome! Silver Cards and below are made from credit card plastic.

Can I receive more than one card?

Unfortunately due to production and shipping logistics of 100K+ fans pledging for multiple tiers, we are only able to send out one card per account. Having said that, should you really desire to have more than one card, you can create a second account and gift a portion of your purchases over to it. If you are outside of the USA this will double your shipping costs too. Please take note that once the pledge is gifted over to your other account that it will reduce the total in your first account.

What name can I put on my card?

The name you choose can be a maximum of 26 characters including spaces. European language characters are available but unfortunately no Asian characters. You may use your real name, in-game name or a combination of the two. (We know a lot of you would like to reserve your callsign/in-game name and we hope to be able to offer this to you all)

Can I make changes to my name after I submit the form?

No. Once you submit the form your card is locked in.

I have already sent my information to Sandi, do I need to fill out the shipping form?

No. Sandi is missing a few responses so please check your spam filter or contact us.

What’s the deal with my T-shirts?

The deal is: If you have ordered T-shirts and ship them now with your citizen card, T-shirt shipping is FREE – you’ll also receive all your goodies sooner and in one package! If you don’t already have a T-shirt in your basket, you can purchase and get free shipping with your card. If you’re all digital and don’t want a card but you want a T-shirt then shipping is still free within the US and $5 outside the US. T-shirts outside of this shipment may not be delivered for a while. Production on the next batch of shirts is TBD as we are ramping up work on the game and we may make these two styles a limited production run. So just the $25 per T-shirt, instead of up to $40 (including shipping) for only 1 T-shirt to some countries!

What quality are these T-shirts?

High thread count, high quality cotton. 95% Cotton with 5% Lycra so the shape will last and your T-shirt will be comfortable to wear.

How do I know my T-shirt size?

T-shirts are all unisex, pre-shrunk sizes from XS – 4XL. Here’s the approximate sizing;
XS Chest (inches) 30-32, Waist 28-30, Length 27
S Chest (inches) 34-36, Waist 30-32, Length 28
M Chest (inches) 38-40, Waist 32-33, Length 29
L Chest (inches) 42-44, Waist 33-34, Length 30
XL Chest (inches) 46-48, Waist 36-38, Length 31
2XL Chest (inches) 48-50, Waist 40-42, Length 32
3XL Chest (inches) 50-52, Waist 44-48, Length 33
4XL Chest (inches) 52-54, Waist 50-52, Length 34

What if I’ve already paid for shipping?

If you’ve already paid for shipping this will show as a credit which can be allocated to the shipment of your citizen card.

Can I use Kickstarter credits for my T-shirt/s and shipping?

Absolutely! If you don’t have enough credit to cover the cost completely you’ll be able to pay for the remaining amount at checkout.

 How much will shipping cost?

Card shipping is free within the USA, $5USD outside of the USA. Add your T-shirt/s now for shipping with your card and shipping is FREE to anywhere on this planet. If you are digital only but would like to purchase a T-shirt, your shipping will be free within the US and $5 outside the US. This is a great deal as after Feb. 15th, T-shirt shipping will be $5-15.

What happens if I don’t fill out the form by the deadline and still want my citizen card?

We will still send you a card, however, the name will be blank and ID# generic. It may also be shipped closer to game launch to avoid someone from CIG going to the post office every other day.

When is the deadline to fill out this form?

Please be sure to get your info. in by February 15th 2013! Remind your friends and help us get the word out!!

When should I expect delivery?

Early April 2013 (unless there are unforeseen productions delays).

Game Changers: Chris Taylor

I’m excited to introduce a new feature at the Roberts Space Industries website: “Game Changers!“. Informal discussions with well-known game developers to give everyone an insight into the developer perspective, the things that excite or challenge and to talk a little about what they are up to. An insider’s access to talented developers that have made games that both you and I love.

My sit down with Chris Taylor, located above, is the first of such pieces, and we shot it before Christmas before he launched his Wildman campaign. We talk about our shared history with Electronic Arts and Microsoft and Wildman. He’s made many great games, such as Total Annihilation, Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander and he never goes into something with less than 150% energy and enthusiasm.

So why Kickstarter for Chris and myself?

It really has to do with the publisher / developer relationship in today’s world. A publisher will say;

“Here’s $20M to make a game, I’ll own the intellectual property and you’ll have to pay me back that $20M from your royalties. Because I’m advancing you so much your royalty rate is going to be only 20% of the net revenue.”

What this means is that the publisher will be making money for a long time before a developer will ever see a penny of profit from their hard work. This model comes from the recording industry, where it works better because the recording cost of the album is a lot less than the cost of selling it. In the old days of game development, when games cost just your own time and could be made quickly the model worked. But as the cost of development has gone up the advantage has irrevocably shifted to the publisher. They still pay the same to market and publish the game as they always did, but the developer side of the cost equation has gone way up. Originally something like 80% of the cost of selling a game was in packaging, sales and marketing and only 20% or less was in development. But now the cost of development is more like 50-60% of the overall investment but the share the developer gets has not increased. So pretty much all independent developers end up being indentured servants to whichever publisher they are working for. They almost never make enough money from any game to become independent and so are completely dependent on development contracts.

This development contracts tend to be so tight that there are not more than a few months of extra “burn” in the bank, so if you don’t land a new job pretty quickly, you are in trouble. Which is why you’ve seen so many developers close over the past few years, especially as publishers have cut back on their external development to focus more and more on in-house sequels to “franchises” like Call of Duty, FIFA or Battlefield.

This is why crowd funding and Kickstarter is so exciting for developers. Besides the awesomeness of connecting directly with people that love your games and engaging in a lot of fun conversations it allows you to free yourself from the shackles of working for a publisher. It takes the publisher out of the revenue chain, allowing the developer to keep more money, which in turn can be used to build a better game the way the community and the developer wants. No crazy notes from publishing executives that don’t play games, or marketing executives wanting to chase the fluffy unicorn of social. That’s why I love crowd funding. I’m immensely grateful to all of you in allowing me to build Star Citizen free from the interference of a publisher. I will build a better game, and I game better tailored to what YOU want. Its why I try to support any of my peers in entering the wild and woolly world of crowd funding. I think it’s a huge boost for the future of game making.

I’ve known Chris for a long time and he’s one of the most straight shooting, forthcoming and funny people you will meet. He’s a genuine pleasure to be around and incredibly talented. Wildman, is about as far from a Space Sim as you can get, but if you’re a fan of any of Chris Taylor’s games I would encourage you to check it out, either on Kickstarter or on their dedicated site. Like Star Citizen, Wildman will build on the DNA of Taylor’s previous games, including both real time strategy and role playing elements in ways never before combined!

I’m backing!
