Spreading Mom is a poetic animation about the final gift a mother gave to her children.
My mother's last wish was that we take her ashes to Florence, Italy. She was born in Italy. Florence was her favorite city. It took us 4 years to do it... but my brother, sister, son & I, we did it!
In granting my mother her last wish, she gave us a wonderful gift. A trip, reuniting family, surrounded by great food, great art and memorable times. It was a wonderful experience for all of us, as a family.
In this project, Spreading Mom, I use the photos, videos and drawings I created during the family’s trip.
The video above is narrated by Bill Buschel who is also scheduled as the writer for the project.
The animated short will be shown in April, 2013 at the Avon Film Theatre Center in Stamford, CT as part of my one hour free event called Moving Pictures. The event will showcase a series of my animated art shorts on the big screen.
I need the funds to complete this project. I do all my own editing, videos, and artwork but I need help with the writing for the voice over as well as the music.
In return for your support of the project I am offering some fabulous original art and other perks.
Please take a look!
And I hope you’ll join me in Spreading Mom!

Risks and challenges
Creating an uplifting film involving spreading my mother's ashes creates a storytelling challenge. In our society death is understandably a sad and little talked about topic, which creates 2 risks for this movie. How to attract people to a movie involving loss, and how to ensure the film maintains the positive experience my family had bringing my mother's ashes to Italy.
Creating this film needs more than just my visuals. So for this reason, hiring the right writer and musical orchestrator is paramount.
Hiring anyone has its risks. Obvious ones like coordinating schedules, and less obvious ones like, in this case in particular, chemistry. Though I’ve collaborated with the two people I contacted about these positions before and feel we can work well together as a team, this project is much more personal than any I’ve attempted before.
For me as a solo artist, developing this film with a team including a writer and musician will be a test of being a team player, manager and administrator. I have to balance keeping my vision of the film with the rest of the team's ideas, encourage them to share their great ideas without discouraging them when we disagree.
The art video is already scheduled to be shown in April so it has a short time frame.
However, I have worked well with both people before and I am confident that we can overcome any obstacles that come up along the way.
I will update you on the progress (and any setbacks) as the film progresses.
Thank you in advance for helping to make this project become a reality!
