Just as Saint Francis of Assisi did in the year 1214, twelve young men from Gilbert, Arizona will follow in the saint's footsteps as they seek to obtain personal spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of the meaning of life. They will begin their pilgrimage on June 20, 2014 and end on July 25th, 2014, the feast day of Saint James. This journey will commemorate the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi's holy pilgrimage, as well as the 1200th Anniversary of the finding of the remains of Saint James the Apostle in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
These twelve men will backpack over 500 miles on foot over Spanish terrain over the course of 40 days, sleeping under the stars and in shelters along the way. They will traverse the Northern Route through some of the most beautiful vistas and landscapes in all of Spain.
This film will tell their story.
The Purpose of the Pilgrimage
The objective is not simply to reach Santiago de Compostela. More important is the inner journey of people in search of themselves and a life worth living. In truth, this is about a life-changing experience. It is our hope that this pilgrimage will serve as a means to help these pilgrims discern their purpose in life.
A pilgrimage is a metaphor for life. The very act of existence is a pilgrimage. This pilgrimage in particular demands that we contemplate the fundamental themes of our human existence: the meaning of life, redemption, eternity, faith, hope and the ability to overcome.
The Motivation for the Documentary
This project was not initially intended for the purpose of filming a documentary. That idea evolved gradually. We felt there was a story to be told -- a story that people might find interesting. We realized that a well-executed documentary could be a window for thousands to partake in the experience of the pilgrims and possibly feel compelled to journey towards a better life themselves. With this resolve, we contacted Grassroots Films, the only company, in our opinion, capable of creating this film as it is meant to be.
Grassroots Films Tells Our Story
With award-winning films like The Human Experience, Child 31 and Fishers of Men, we can assure you that the Way of Saint James will not be just another documentary. It may be one of the finest documentaries Grassroots Films will ever produce. With each impactful and heartfelt step, the truth and spirit of the Way of Saint James will be revealed in all its raw beauty and splendor. Help us tell this story.

Many leaders in the Catholic community have endorsed this project. Here are what a few of them have said:
ARCHBISHOP PAUL S. COAKLEY, Archbishop of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: "The Way of St. James offers the Christian pilgrim a deep immersion into the mysteries, challenges, demands and joys of discipleship. On two occasions I have had the opportunity to walk long sections of this ancient pilgrim way leading to the Tomb of Santiago de Compostela. I hope and pray that this project will help many others to discover its possibilities as a powerful instrument for the New Evangelization."
ARCHBISHOP EMERITUS JOSEPH A. FIORENZA, Galveston-Houston: “I have been informed of the planned documentary, The Way of St. James which will emphasize the spiritual dimension of the “El Camino” pilgrimage. I certainly support this project and hope that generous people will respond favorably to appeals for financial help.”
BISHOP THOMAS J. OLMSTED, Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona: "This project would be a tool for the New Evangelization. Our life in Christ is a pilgrimage, a journey of faith. It involves faith and sacrifice. It is done in community with others in Christ. Through such a documentary, the seeds of faith might be replanted in Europe, and be strengthened in America and other places. It would also be a fountain of graces for those taking part in the Way of Saint James. Be assured of my interest and prayers."
BISHOP JAMES D. CONLEY, Bishop of Lincoln, Nebraska: "I have twice been a pilgrim along "the Way of Saint James," once with brother priests and once with young people seeking to deepen their spiritual lives. To walk the Camino to Santiago is to walk in communion with saints and sinners, all seeking, whether they realize it or not, Jesus Christ. The Camino is a pilgrimage alive with the prayers of over a millennium of those who have walked before. "The Way" is ever ancient, ever new, and ever beautiful. We need more pilgrims in the world today. We need more disciples. The Camino project will awaken people to the beauty of setting out along a path, in search of Jesus Christ."
BISHOP JAMES S. WALL, Bishop of Gallup, New Mexico: "For centuries pilgrims have made the Camino of Santiago de Compostela as an act of faith, seeking a deeper relationship with God. I have had the privilege to be numbered among the faithful who journey to the tomb of Saint James the Greater and found it to be a life changing experience. In recent years there has been an increase of pilgrims on "The Way", some for religious and some for secular purposes. This film will help to recapture the true meaning of the Camino, which is an encounter with the Living Christ at each step along The Way. I wholeheartedly endorse this project, as it is an integral part of the New Evangelization."
BISHOP EDUARDO A. NEVARES, Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona: "Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Following Jesus along "el Camino", you will be blessed with knowing the truth about God and yourself. This will lead you to a fuller Life!May each of you who follow Jesus along this "Way", receive my Apostolic blessing."
FATHER MITCH PACWA, S.J., Ignatius Productions: "Having made or led about eighty pilgrimages during my life, including to Santiago de Compostela (though on a bus, not on foot), I look forward to the development of this project. Older arguments about pilgrimage centered on the attempt to gain merit and indulgences through pilgrimages, but they fail to focus on the multitude of ways that a pilgrimage challenges, informs and changes a person. I look forward to learning about this journey of faith as a way to inspire other Catholics to make their own pilgrimages, leaving behind the assumptions of our materialistic culture and discovering Jesus Christ and the neighbor."
TOM PETERSON, VirtueMedia and Catholics Come Home: "The Way of St James will help pilgrims grow closer to Christ. I recommend this pilgrimage, and think this story should be shared with others."
"Santiago de Compostela is a place that has рlауеd a very important role in the history of Christianity; and so, its spiritual message is in itself very eloquent. Throughout the centuries the рlасе has been a 'point of attraction and convergence for Europe and for the whole of Christendom.'¨ ~Blessed John Paul II
You, the Virtual Pilgrim
We are looking for spiritual pilgrims to join us and be a part of our pilgrimage to Santiago. For those who have never had a spiritual experience, this could very well mark the beginning of your own spiritual journey. We hope this film will allow you to experience the Way of St. James right from your own home -- to be a part, at this point in time, of something so extraordinary in which the most unlikely elements have come together in order to capture the real beauty of the Way of Saint James on celluloid. At some point in our lives, we all wonder if we will ever be a part of something impactful or life-changing; the answer is a resounding “Yes!” and the opportunity is NOW.
Long-term Funding of the movie
We are looking for people to support us in our efforts to film this journey. It is our ultimate goal to raise $1,400,000 in order to completely fund this project. Reaching this goal in a span of 30 days may seem insurmountable, but if you consider that 2000 gifts of $500 each can take us most of “the Way”, we believe this mountain can indeed be moved and are confident that there are at least 2000 individuals willing to successfully back our endeavor. (None of the funds raised will be used to pay for the pilgrim's trips. They are responsible for their own costs and will travel to Santiago de Compostela regardless of our outcome on Kickstarter.)
Why, then, is our project goal set at $150,000? Because reaching that minimum goal will finish funding pre-production and get the cameras rolling. This is where we make our commitment to you, the “Executive Producers” of this film.
If we raise $150,000 (our minimum goal), we will make a film, continue to fund-raise and see this project through, all “the Way”.
If we raise $800,000, a short 30-minute documentary is a possibility, but will not do justice to “the Way of Saint James”.
If we raise $1,400,000 (our ultimate goal), we will make a full-length documentary worthy of “the Way of Saint James”.
Some Kickstarter projects breakdown a documentary project into phases and then continue to raise funds with successive campaigns. We feel this creates a sense of insecurity. We could set our goal at $1,400,000 but we run the risk of not funding this project at all. What we do have is faith—expectant faith that YOU will help us reach our Minimum Goal and continue to give generously to help us attain our Ultimate Goal so that we may present to you a documentary worthy of “the Way of Saint James”.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our project. Again, thank you, in advance, for your generous support.
