About

(There is a complete video of the game play at the bottom of this page.)

Hello, my name is Chunbum Park. My friends call me Chun. I am a BFA Fine Arts student attending the School of Visual Arts in NYC. I will be a senior in the coming Fall semester of 2019.

Artworld: The Card Game is a card game that I created with the goal of promoting great  artworks by artists and allowing people to enjoy a fun game. Artworld has the potential to become a great platform for people to share and enjoy their art, while having a great time playing the game with a simple but very fun playing mechanism.

In-game paper money

Artworld has 2 roles to play - 1 neutral art critic and multiple art collectors who compete to win. Art critic is the banker and the judge who rates artworks and gives money to the collectors based on the rating of the artwork submitted. Art collectors buy art through open auction and sell to the critic for money and points.

An important part of this game to ensure fair play is that on each artwork card is written a unique number that the critic would write down, and he or she would score the artwork when it is drawn from the deck before it is sold to a collector. This ensures that the art critic cannot play favorites with one particular player.

The art collectors may win the game by acquiring 10 million dollars (they each start with 3 to 5 million dollars in the beginning, based on the number of players present) or 5 collection points first.

A collection point is awarded when a collection or set of artwork cards are collected by the art collector and presented to the critic for review, and each collection or set of artwork cards must share a same trait written on the card, such as same artist name, year, a specific medium, style, and color (subject is the only collection category not written on the card). In addition to the money received based on the rating, the collector also receives 1-3 points based on the size of the collection (1 point for 3 cards; 2 points for 5 cards; and 3 points for 7 cards). The first collector who reaches 5 points wins the game. Once a collection is submitted, another collection with same theme or trait may not be submitted again.

There is also a special instruction card included that allows for blind auction (or mystery auction) of a card drawn from the deck without being revealed. This adds to the surprise fun element.

The original game comprises 69 artworks (70 cards including the special instructions card), 100 in-game paper money, 20 collection point tokens, and 1 instruction manual with a FAQ section inside a well-designed box. The expansion pack will consist of 70 additional artworks inside a small box.

The game has been tested numerous times in the past 2-3 years, going through many iterations. I took out the extra features such as the Special Roles because they would unbalance the game. The core game mechanism is very solid, balanced, and fun to play.

70% of the net profit will go the artists (14 artists each getting 5%). I am one of the artists so I also get 5% in addition to the 25% for creating and managing the Park Art Company. I hope that Artworld: The Card Game will be a great success! Thank you so much.

Risks and challenges

The original game is already tested and well made. I anticipate the only big challenge being the making of the expansion pack because it's really difficult to find artists who are willing to contribute their art to the game. I already have 40~ artworks ready so I will need to prepare 30 new ones.
