About

CHULO is a cultural clothing line that donates proceeds to help marginalized young people. Our hope as a brand is to make fashion that is FUN and that helps us FUNdraise for our communities. Each purchase has a direct impact: we donate our proceeds to a local community-based organization (CBO), scholarship program or charity that services the very same youth we work with, and whom we hope to inspire.

For this Kickstarter campaign, we have three goals:

1. CHULO already has strong ties to several local community-based organizations in the NYC-area that work with marginalized youth and young people. Our first goal is to select one young artist from each of the boroughs who is connected to one of the neighborhood programs with which we work: the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance and El Maestro in the Bronx, Uprose and the Get Kids Off The Streets Project in Brooklyn, and the Arts Appreciation Program for Homeless LGBTQ Youth in Manhattan.

Each young artist will receive a stipend of $450 that the person can use towards school, a vocational program or a training program. That stipend will be received after each young artist successfully completes 30 hours of classes and training on fashion design, graphic arts and marketing. CHULO wants to help young people learn how to bring their ideas to fruition, and how to transform the art they do in their free time to a paid gig or a college class where they can receive additional support and education.

Artists will be selected by their community-based organizations to participate in this paid internship which will run from June to August of 2018.

2. About $4000 will be used to produce the fashions the young artists will be creating the art for and which they will be helping to design. The CHULO gear will include our trademark tees and fun underwear, but we are hoping to add additional gear like hoodies that we will be repurposing and giving new life to. Remember, part of CHULO's mission is to make fashion that serves a purpose, and we work with CBOs that promote recycling and repurposing. Some of the art we make will be created with or painted on overstock items we may purchase at discount bulk prices or on items we have donated to us by manufacturers.

3. And, finally, our young artists will have the opportunity to increase the amount of money they get for college or a vocational program by earning a fifty percent share of the profits from any of the designs they sell. The remainder of the profits will be reinvested back into their home community-based organizations. These young artists will be keeping in line with the brand's mission of investing in our own marginalized communities. However, these young artists will be able to earn their own income and help their own neighborhoods at the same time.

Whatcha say? Your small donation can help the CHULO brand create an artist internship program that definitely pays it forward.

Risks and challenges

As with all big ideas involving young people in marginalized communities, there are risks involved. Here are the most prominent ones and how we plan on addressing them:

1. Completion of internship programs in marginalized communities has been a challenge for many community-based organizations. What makes CHULO think it can succeed where others have failed.

Our program is not free-standing. We are working in tandem with the community organizations to select and support each young artist. These means more eyes, ears and hands involved, and, hence, more support. Additionally, the internship is only 30 hours long. Young artists are earning about $15 an hour to be a part of something that can earn them additional monies for school. The time between starting and finishing is a realistic time period for our youth.

2. Youth from marginalized communities have high drop out rates in both job and educational settings. What will you do if a young person drops out?

Our working in tandem with the local CBO helps stabilize the young people involved by making sure there are team members working together to ensure the success of the individual participant. We will make sure to have alternates selected in the event someone does drop out.

3. What guarantees do you have that your t-shirt, underwear and hoodie designs will be financially successful? How can I be sure my money is going to be spent on something that works.

To date, CHULO has produced 8 underwear designs. Two are sold out. Only one was not successful in terms of total sales, but we were able to break even on that design.

To date, the brand has produced two t-shirt designs in many colors. All of the designs and all of the colors have been reprinted, and several of the colors (red, brown and black) have had at least four printings.

Additionally, we have sold out of each of the limited, repurposed designs we have made: hoodies, athletic shirts, tanks and sweats.

With this success rate, our strong work ethic, and our team of dedicated community leaders and educators, the CHULO brand believes our next designs will succeed as well--even more so because we will have young interns motivated by their own financial gains for school to help promote and sell more items.

However, we do have two remedies in place in case we do not succeed with the internship program and with the new gear designs.

A. If we fail to have an intern or an alternate complete the program, we will donate that funding to our partner CBO, so that they can access the funding for their own scholarship program.

B. If any item fails to sell the way we hope, we will donate that gear to several youth shelters in NYC that are always looking for clothing for their young residents. Please understand this would be an expansion of what the brand does already: we donate a small percentage of our stock to homeless youth programs, so that everyone can be a "CHULO" whether s/he can afford to buy the product or not. We may also donate the gear to our partner CBOs, so that their participants can be "CHULOs", too.
