About

The Chrysalis Program, for years, has offered a breakfast, lunch and workshops to girls from at risk neighborhoods. The difficulty is the lack of consistency with finding a place to host our free program. Children who experience childhood trauma (such as poverty, bullying, domestic/sexual violence, and PTSD from living in dangerous neighborhoods) require stability.

We are currently only hosting one Saturday Session per month. A Saturday Session begins with breakfast, a STEM activity, affirmations, an interactive social emotional workshop and then a full hot lunch. In addition, we offer parent classes for those who are willing to attend.

We have held sessions everywhere from libraries across Chicago's South Side to the Chicago Park Districts and Forest Preserves.  Being without a permanent location limits our ability to accommodate the number of girls that need our assistance, the resources/programming we can offer, and the services needed. We need a location with space for an office, workshops, life skill classes and to cook and serve food to our students.

We envision a location with an area to offer counseling, group therapy, art therapy, music therapy, social emotional workshops and practical life skills classes (public speaking, financial literacy, etiquette, etc).

The plan is to purchase a less than perfect building that can accommodate our programs needs. We plan to as a community renovate and create a beautiful safe space for students and their families right on the south side of Chicago.

Risks and challenges

Everything we have done for the Chrysalis Program has solely been done through the generosity of supporters of our program. There isn't a product that we sell that generates ongoing revenue to cover the overhead costs of having a location. We have a new grant writing team that in the process of requesting funds to keep our program thriving in case fundraising support isn't sustainable.

Our program currently runs on little outgo. Adding a permanent location will add to the cost of the program.
