What is CHRONICLE :: FERGUSON?

CHRONICLE :: FERGUSON is a crowdsourced book of photographs on the subject of “Ferguson”. The images provide a first-person, social account of what really happened in the wake of Michael Brown’s death. Through research and collaboration, our main objectives are to generate a large photo database from those who bore witness, to compile a chronological narrative, to create a curriculum with lesson plans to accompany the book for schools, and to conduct a workshop for youth to learn the importance of sharing their lives through photography.

Why is this book important?

CHRONICLE :: FERGUSON will comprise work from potentially hundreds of photographers, and is founded upon the concept of both telling a story and answering a need. As a registered 501(c)3 non-profit venture, copies of the publication will be donated to all public high schools, colleges and libraries within the city and county of St. Louis. This is because it is paramount for the message to not only be generated, but to possess the basic ability to be received. Our book will be a resource for future generations to look back upon, and to study what happened here in Ferguson and St. Louis.

Educational aspects

Accompanying each photo-book will be an online-accessible, educational curriculum. The main goals of this curriculum is for students to 1. understand the arc of history related to inequality in the urban United States, 2. understand how such inequalities impact society relating to health, education, employment and overall social standing, and 3. connect the history of the past to that of the present, i.e. segregation then and now. The purpose of releasing this curriculum is to demonstrate ways in which this photo-book can be integrated into schools and community spaces. This programming will emphasize different learning styles and structures, working to cultivate educational exploration of history as it relates to the arts. While this programming will adhere to general common core standards, it aims to address a broad array of topics such that students build and formulate connections for themselves.

Where does the non-profit go from here?

Our long term goal is to create a series of photo-books chronicling different events, around the globe, as they happen. A team of citizen photographers will be assembled on an international scale to help cover stories as they occur. CHRONICLE :: hopes to change the way news items are seen and shared by sourcing images from local communities instead of outside photojournalists.

Who are we?

Santiago Bianco, a St. Louis photographer, envisioned a book that would tell the story of what happened in Ferguson. Santiago is the spokesperson for CHRONICLE :: FERGUSON. He has been on the ground in Ferguson and can relate to those contributing their images to the book. He is in charge of sourcing content from photographers around St. Louis. Now that the foundation for the project has been set, he maintains its focus to ensure that its vision is fulfilled.

Steve Sommers is a self-employed, entrepreneur with over thirty years of experience in a variety of fields. Recently though, he has focused his efforts on community building through his work as Curator of TEDxGatewayArch. Being a St. Louis native and having been involved in numerous peaceful protests and demonstrations, Steve is well aware of the issues facing this community. Steve serves as the business end of CHRONICLE :: FERGUSON, and brings his expertise in community building, sponsorship, and fundraising.

Jason Gray is an independent curator and photographer in St. Louis, who has contributed exhibitions to The Dark Room Photo Gallery and Wine Bar, the Kranzberg Arts Center, and the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum, among others. For CHRONICLE :: FERGUSON, Mr. Gray contributes his expertise concerning image sequencing, image licensing, arts writing and data management.

Augmented Reality

CHRONICLE :: is prepared to augment the book with a photo recognition application for smart phones and tablets. This app will be capable of recognizing images from the book and providing readers with supplemental information. By scanning a photo with the app, extra content will appear on the device. Videos, related articles, photographer interviews, and even more will become available instantly. This stretch goal will help CHRONICLE :: FERGUSON become the extraordinary educational resource we know it can be!

Risks and challenges

We want CHRONICLE :: to live on past Ferguson. Our long term goal is to create a series of photo-books chronicling different events, around the globe, as they happen. A team of citizen photographers will be assembled on a international scale to help cover stories as they occur. CHRONICLE :: hopes to change the way news items are seen and shared by sourcing images from local communities instead of outside photojournalists.
