About this project
Update: If we reach $9,000 (or get reasonably close), we can also do a video game for Tokyo Demons: Book 2. Please see http://www.tokyodemons.com/games/ for more information!
Tokyo Demons is an original prose serial, written by Lianne Sentar and illustrated by Priscilla Hamby/rem in the style of the Japanese light novel. The story follows Ayase, a young woman who can turn her body into a swarm of insects, and Jo, a young man with a talent for charm and pickpocketing, as they enter high school and are subsequently dragged into Tokyo's supernatural underground gang war. The cast of characters is huge, but the perspective generally alternates between the POV of Ayase and Jo.
Tokyo Demons is also being serialized as a dramatized audio book by Rebecca Scoble. The Tokyo Demons Audio features original music, a fully voiced cast, and sound effects for punching and/or puking when appropriate.
The Tokyo Demons series is three books long, and the story and audio book (minus a few bonus short stories) are serialized online for free. Book 1 was funded by the staff itself and is almost complete--you can read it now at www.tokyodemons.com. This funding is for Book 2, which we hope to start in May or June of 2012. Funding will pay for illustrations, better equipment for the audio book, printing costs, and hopefully better food for our actors, who currently get paid in pizza. Let's pay them in...better pizza or something!
To be honest, $3,000 is LESS than what each book costs us--we just picked a value that would ensure we could continue the series for the time being. More pledges will ensure Tokyo Demons can continue with a faster updating schedule and without us going into debt again!
But that's boring, so we're going to make this interesting. If we reach these new levels past the $3,000 mark, we're going to release special bonus material on the site, aka available to EVERYONE for free:
$4,000: We'll release a special flashback short story through the POV of a side character, and we'll let readers vote on which character the story will be about. We may be able to get a bonus piece of art for this, too. [UPDATE: Goal reached! Vote for your character at http://twtpoll.com/hd0pn2]
$5,000: We'll release a flashFORWARD short story from Tokyo Ghosts, the series we're hoping to do after the completion of Tokyo Demons Books 1-3. We promise this won't spoil Tokyo Demons--it will just give teasers and some insight into the later series, which takes place 5 years after the events of Tokyo Demons and focuses on Ayase and Jo learning about their origins. [UPDATE: Goal reached! Wow, you guys are awesome.]
$6,000: We'll do a Tokyo Demons Talk/Character CD! A Talk CD is a media format used in Japan, a sort of "immersive" CD where the character is talking directly to the listener during simple events like taking a drive, going to an amusement park, etc. Character CDs with a romantic side--sometimes called "date" CDs--are the basis of Japanese franchises such as Starry Sky (http://sleepisfortheweak.org/reviews/micros/starrysky). We'll have listeners vote on which character will do the Talk CD as well as the theme of the CD--friendship, drama, or romance. [UPDATE: Goal reached! Yesssss. We'll have sample clips and the poll up after the end of the Kickstarter. This is gonna be wicked fun, guys.]
$7,000: We'll do a Tokyo Demons tactical card game! Alex O'Shea, voice of Jo, is a nationally ranked card gamer who's been designing games for years, and he has an excellent pitch for a game based on Tokyo Demons: Book 2. If we hit $7,000, we can actually make that happen. Note: This is a reward tier where we'd actually need to charge for the final product (since it will cost money to physically print the cards), but we'll offer a special discount to anyone who pledges $10 or more on this Kickstarter. Whee! [UPDATE: Goal reached! OH MY GOD YES.]
$8,000: Lianne will write another short story for the site, but the theme will be dictated entirely by you guys. We'll open a discussion board and all readers will be asked to submit one story idea of LITERALLY ANY REQUEST: hinted canon, alternate universe, off-screen make-outs, Jo Gets Laser Eyes, etc. We'll put all story ideas to a vote and Lianne will be forced to write out the winner, no matter how ridiculous. If enough people vote for Sachi getting a magical girl spin-off, you'd better believe he's gonna be Fighting Evil By Starlight.
$9,000: We'll do a VIDEO GAME. There's a particular period in Tokyo Demons: Book 2 where all the heroes are crushed into small quarters and relationships bloom or go sour because of the forced intimacy, so if we hit the $9,000 mark, we'll make a relationship-building visual novel game of that period with multiple endings, including alternatives to what actually happens in the book - new romantic couplings and all. The game will be voiced by the voice actors of the audio book and will be FREE TO DOWNLOAD. For everyone. (We may release a deluxe version with bonus content for sale later, like we're doing with the book and audio book, but the basic game will be FREE. FOREVER.) See sample screenshots of the Tokyo Demons video game (courtesy of our artist) at http://www.tokyodemons.com/games/#
Thank you so much for your support! YOUR LOVE WILL BE REWARDED WITH PRIZES.
Tokyo Demons has a different publishing model from mainstream book publishing - the vast majority of content is published online for free. If you enjoy Tokyo Demons, you can go to http://www.tokyodemons.com and read Book 1/listen to the audio book without paying a cent. Have fun and best wishes!
But free content has to be paid for by someone, hence the Kickstarter fundraiser. Although we're grateful for any pledge of $1 or more, we're not expecting small pledges from a lot of people - we're expecting bigger pledges from a small group of people, those who can subsidize the content so it's available to everyone else for free. We've been really impressed and humbled by the number of backers who are willing to do that. Last year we had a serious discussion about the costs of Tokyo Demons, and how we couldn't continue unless we started charging for the content (especially the audio book)...but now, thanks to your generosity, we shouldn't have to do that. Tokyo Demons can remain free and we won't go bankrupt paying all the costs ourselves. Thank you!
P.S.--The rewards for higher pledges and the rising total will get you more original content, which is something unique we can offer for your Kickstarter generosity. Thank you for your support so far and thanks in advance as we enter our final week! We're crossing our fingers for our new, unexpected dream - $9K and that video game. We're kiddies at heart and WE FREAKING LOVE VIDEO GAMES.
