About this project
HEY! WE DID IT. Celebrations all round. Crack a beer/Pepsi, relax a little.
OH WAIT! Now we're aiming for those pesky stretch goals. Scroll down to read all about them.
IMPORTANT NOTE:We offered a FREE BOOKMARK to the first fifty post backers, but they're all gone now. Sorry.
But we've still got something for you... when we're packing everything up to send, we'll pick ten people at random to receive an extra poster. There's nothing you can do to ensure you get one of these, but if you send us a little message telling us what you'd do with the poster, we might consider sending you one too...
(all digital backers will receive a .jpeg of me using the bookmark in a book I haven't actually read but that makes me look smart and cool.)
Yeah, we're back.
In January, Kickstarter (and some of you, I hope) helped us raise a sweet £2500 (actually £2492... so close...) to bring WART - BOOK ONE and BOOK TWO to life. Well, to print. Still working on instilling them with sentience.
We're the two strapping young (ish) creators of www.wartcomic.com and we're here to ask for your support. Again.
WART is an original horror comic series starring Wart Bellamy, an unfortunate young fellow ripped from his reality and tossed into a mysterious, other-worldly 'Asylum for the Belligerently Insane'.
There are monsters, cults, ghosts, rats, and a shady doctor in charge of the whole thing. Wart's story takes him through multiple dimensions that threaten both his physical health and his crumbling sanity. Along the way he makes friends, enemies and gets incrementally closer to finding out just what the hell is going on.
Book One collects the first three 10-page 'parts' of the comic. In addition to those there is an exclusive part 3.5 which only appears in the book! It also contains some sketches and extra art.
Book Two collects parts 4 and 5 together: two huge parts which continue the madness. It will also include an exclusive story (Part 5.5) which will only ever be in the book!
Which brings us to...
Book Three. Parts 6 and 7 together, plus a short exclusive story that will only ever appear in the print version of the book (or the digi copy of the print version... basically it won't be on our site to read for free!) - around 30 pages in total.
It's almost fully cooked and ready to be devoured, so we've returned to Kickstarter as a way of getting it out there. You know the drill by now; in exchange for your support, we send you awesome stuff we've made either digitally or really. Then you read/wear/whatever them.
The whole thing is written, drafted, planned and sketched, and we're both very happy with it. The book will collect parts 6, 7, and the EXCLUSIVE Part 7.5.
'Exclusive' in this case means we'll never put it up on our site for free. it will only ever appear in printed format, or in the digital version of the book.
We have the cover art already in mind and sketched out, but we're holding off on it until we reach the halfway mark on the Kickstarter. You can trust us to make something excellent.
WART exists thanks to the wonder of the Internet. Without it, I’d be some unknown writer guy who wanted to write a comic and Ammar would be a cool artist with no script. We ‘met’ on the internet over two years ago after Ammar posted an advert on Reddit about wanting to work with a writer. I replied and then, a few months later, we had part of a comic done without ever having met in person. Through a surprisingly organic process, we shaped it from a rough idea into a story with a backbone and heart. And monsters. A lot of giant monsters. In those couple of years we've taken WART to a whole bunch of UK Comic Conventions, met fans, had a lot of fun, and eventually we met in person - at Nottingham Comic Con. Thankfully, we didn't instantly hate each other, so Wart can continue! We had a great time at Dutch Comic Con in March and hope to repeat it all again in 2016!
Our con schedule for the rest of 2015 is packed up tight -
August 16th - MEGACON, CARLISLE
August 29th - MANCSTERCON, MANCHESTER
Sept 5th - ICECON, BIRMINGHAM
Sept 19th/20th - N.I.C.E., BEDFORD
Oct 11th - COMIC CON LEICESTER, er, LEICESTER
Oct 24th - NOTTINGHAM COMIC CON
Nov 14th/15th - THOUGHT BUBBLE, LEEDS.
Earlier this year we were also nominated for a GHASTLY AWARD for 'EXCELLENCE IN HORROR COMICS'. We didn't win, but it was nice to be nommed. We got certificates and everything!
CHRIS WELSH - WRITER/BARTENDER/TYRE-SWING-EXPERT
Chris is a novelist/screenwriter/comic writer/columnist/’anything that has words in’ writer. He lives in Liverpool, England with his beloved laptop and too many books.
A script he wrote about time travel and the end of the world made it to the semi-finals of the Bluecat Screenplay Competition. Top 2% out of the almost 4500 scripts that entered.
He mostly writes horror, mostly, with dashes of comedy, sci-fi and fantasy. If only he could pick one damn genre, he might be more successful. His writing has been called 'witty' (by Ammar) and 'perfectly fine I suppose' (by his old high school English teacher, about 12 years ago). You can find him at cwelsh.co.uk or on Twitter as @C_W_Writes He writes all of his ‘About Me’ text himself, but does it in the third person so it seems like he has an assistant to do it for him.
AMMAR AL-CHALABI - ARTIST/COLOURIST/LETTERER/BADASS
Ammar is a professional graphic designer by day and an illustrator by night, so his tablet pencil has permanently fused with his hand (making him a slightly less cool Ash from Evil Dead). A bunch of his work can be found on zombieburger.com. He has worked with professional metal bands and production companies. After reading way too many H.P. Lovecraft stories and slowly going mad he was finally inspired to create his own setting and stories in the wonderful genre that is cosmic horror. Ammar was last seen starting a doomsday cult in his home country the Netherlands but hasn't yet left the first bar. This is the exact same bio he used last time because he considers it perfect.
"Reading Wart #2 by Welsh and Al-Calabi makes me feel like I have been thrown into a Lovecraft tale illustrated by the Cartoon Network animation team." - El Moos, Big Glasgow Comic Page
"This is a very interesting and worthwhile comic all around, with a great story and vivid artwork. If you’re into horror/comedy, with an appreciation for Lovecraft, you’ll want to check out Wart." - Fanboy Comics
"Horror books don’t all have to be all about bloody ink splatters and dismembered body parts. With Wart, Welsh and Al Chalabi have created a series that mixes the horrific with the humorous without either seeming out of place. All of which creates a gleefully ghoulish series as a result!" - Pipedream Comics
"I love how it is both cartoonish and still super creepy. Ammar does some great stuff with his lines, the water, and the squishy evilness of the elder creatures. Even his rats are both grotesque and loveable. Chris writes a smooth story and draws us deep into a world where nothing is at it seems and reality is just a state of mind." - ComicBooked.com
We've set our goal at £1300. That's how much we need to complete everything and get all rewards made etc.
But that doesn't mean we haven't planned ahead...
£1600 - Three extremely talented artists will be commissioned to create three EXCLUSIVE Wart pin-ups that'll appear in the back of Book Three.
They are, in no particular order:
The delectable VINCE HUNT, the man behind the RED MASK FROM MARS.
GERRIT WILLEMSE, who makes awesome stuff like this.
And games artist, illustrator and comic creator ROBIN KEIJZER.
We can't wait to see what they come up with.
£2000 - Everyone who pledges at the £12-or-above level (not including postage costs, sorry) will also get a LIMITED EDITION WART COLOURING BOOK.
Yeah, you read that right. Colour your own damn comic. Make Wart green if you want. Give him polka-dot pants. Go nuts.
If we raise more than £2000, we'll announce further stretch goals. Probably something cool for every backer, if possible.
We want you to be able to read these with as little fuss aspossible, so we'll send you them in .cbz and .pdf format. One of those should open on whatever device you read comics on. The files are DRM-free and you can do whatever you want with them (except, y'know, sell them).
They'll have the same extra story pages as the print version, which will never be on our website.
Great quality paper and ink books printed by the chaps at UK COMICS CREATIVE. They did an excellent job on Books 1 and 2 (as anyone who has a copy will attest) and we're confident they'll do the same with Book Three.
They'll have the extra story pages which will never be on our website.
A selection of five cards, about the same size as a post card, featuring Art by Ammar Al-Chalabi. Not all of them Wart-related, but all of them awesome. If we hit our first stretch goal, they may even feature art by our esteemed guest pin-up artists...
EXCLUSIVE A4 PRINT
Not available anywhere except this Kickstarter. It's designed by Ammar and will be printed on super fancy card stock (so it's much thicker than a standard poster). You could probably roll it up and beat the lights out of someone with it. Please don't, though.
Stop being topless! Get yourself an excellent t-shirt to wear.
We have male and female fits, and a range of sizes from S to XL for both. It looks like this, modelled by Ian Nesbit and his beard:
NEED A HAND?
Chris Welsh will take a look at any piece of work you like. Pitch document, script in development, finished script, screenplay - anything within reason (so... no novels, sorry) and dish out some advice. He once described a character he was developing as 'The kinda guy who buys merch at a strip club...' so you know you're in good hands.
PERSONALISED SKETCH BY AMMAR
You can even be in it. Just send us over some pictures of you (or whoever you want to be in it) and we'll do the rest.
Here's some her did last time:
(The first is a monster destroying part of the Liverpool skyline, the second is Bruce Campbell telling Wart-writer Chris Welsh that he sucks. IT IS A TOTALLY FICTIONAL EVENT. BRUCE LOVES ME.)
If you have a shop we'll send you 10x Wart Bundles. Each bundle has Books 1, 2, and 3 in them. Plus some extra posters and prints to sell, giveaway or just for advertising purposes. Each book will be signed by writer and artist too.
BE IN THE NEXT BOOK
Select this reward to have your likeness drawn into WART - BOOK FOUR. We've planned the segment out already, pretty much, but it's possibly spoiler-y and is still subject to change so we're keeping it under out hat for the time being...
We hope to have Book Four out early-to-mid 2016, so this is a reward to buy yourself, forget about, and then get a nice surprise.
This section pretty much helps you build your own pledge reward.
If you don't like the looks of anything we've put together, but still want SOMETHING, back us at these amounts and send us a message letting us know exactly what you want.
T-Shirt - £18 (£20 outside of UK)
Custom Sketch - £40 (£45 outside of UK)
Need A Hand? - £30 (No extra postage)
Exclusive A4 Print - £5 (£8 outside of UK)
Anything else, just drop me a message and we can work it out for you. I'm aware this can get a bit confusing and messy so I'm happy to help out and make sure you et exactly what you want!
Also, you can always add these things after making your initial pledge by increasing the amount, if you decide later on that you want a t shirt or whatever.
SO THAT'S IT. Any questions, suggestions or comments, let us know either by Kickstarter message, or via the social media stuff below. We'll reply as fast as we can.
Risks and challenges
This ain't our first Kickstarter rodeo, but we know from experience how things can get a bit hectic.
Our last one, in January, saw a bit of a delay (about a month) on items being sent out. That was our fault for not properly anticipating just how long things take to make. But that won't happen again; we've learned from experience and hopefully have it all straightened out now. More realistic timescales, etc.
We've also got a better handle on postage costs, what rewards people actually want, and that sort of thing. Which means we've streamlined what we're offering to hopefully give you exactly what you want from a comic Kickstarter.
The scripts are done for Book Three and over half of the art is complete. We're starting the Kickstarter now as a pre-order that will be ready to go as soon as the artwork is complete and the book is printed.
Wart is going to run for a long time, so we won't be messing it up now!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
