We are BACK!
We took some time off while Ammar started his new freelancing business (hire him) and Chris went off to open a bar (Craft Taproom, in Liverpool UK, it's rad) and do a little series called NESS - but we're back aboard the WART train with another completed book for you!
All that's left to do is print it and post it out to you good people. There are some fresh preview pages down the bottom, but if you're new here you won't want to read them just yet ... #Spoilers ... so allow me to introduce you to our magnificent little series...
WART is an original horror comic series starring Wart Bellamy, an unfortunate young fellow ripped from his reality and tossed into a mysterious, other-worldly 'Asylum for the Belligerently Insane'. There are monsters, cults, ghosts, rats, and a shady doctor in charge of the whole thing. Wart's story takes him through multiple dimensions that threaten both his physical health and his crumbling sanity. Along the way he makes friends, enemies and gets incrementally closer to finding out just what the hell is going on.
Unbeknownst to him he is able to travel to different dimensions (or he's pulled into other dimensions against his will). While an insane asylum isn’t the best place to be, these dimensions are filled with huge monsters and terrible dangers.
While intentionally we started as a serious horror comic things got a bit sillier along the way. The art style and Chris’s writing helped with that. What we ended up is a weird little horror tale with lots of British humour.
A couple of years ago Kickstarter (and some of you, I hope) helped us raise enough to bring WART - BOOK ONE and BOOK TWO to life. (Well, to print. Still working on instilling them with sentience.) Then shortly after we pulled the same deal to produce WART - BOOK THREE.
We're the two strapping young(ish) creators of www.wartcomic.com and we're here to ask for your support for the brand new fourth installment.
You can read the first two book's worth of stuff on our website to whet your whistle, and grab Book Three and Four in this very Kickstarter. The print versions also have extra story that doesn't appear on the website, but gives extra depth and info on the world these people and creatures inhabit.
Book Four is all cooked and ready to be devoured, so we've returned to Kickstarter as a way of getting it out there. You know the drill by now; in exchange for your support, we send you awesome stuff we've made either digitally or really. Then you read/wear/whatever them. The whole thing is written, drafted, planned, sketched, drawn and coloured, and we're both very happy with it.
Back around Book Two, WART was nominated for a GHASTLY AWARD for 'EXCELLENCE IN HORROR COMICS'. We didn't win, but it was nice to be nommed. We got certificates and everything!
CHRIS WELSH - WRITER/BARTENDER/GHOUL
Chris is a novelist/screenwriter/comic writer. He lives in Liverpool with his laptop and too many books. He's also responsible for NESS and, partly, DOC DINO. He mostly writes horror, mostly, with dashes of comedy, sci-fi and fantasy. His writing has been called 'witty' (by Ammar) and 'perfectly fine I suppose' (by his old high school English teacher, about 16 years ago). You can find him at on Twitter as @C_W_Writes
AMMAR AL-CHALABI - ARTIST/COLOURIST/LETTERER/BADASS
Ammar is a professional graphic designer by day and an illustrator by night, so his tablet pencil has permanently fused with his hand (making him a slightly less cool Ash from Evil Dead). A bunch of his work can be found on ammar.nl ~ He has worked with professional metal bands and production companies. After reading too many H.P. Lovecraft stories and slowly going mad he was finally inspired to create his own setting and stories in the wonderful genre that is cosmic horror. Ammar was last seen starting a doomsday cult in his home country the Netherlands but hasn't yet left the first bar. This is the exact same bio he used last time because he considers it perfect.
Some carefully selected quotes about WART...
"Reading Wart #2 by Welsh and Al-Chalabi makes me feel like I have been thrown into a Lovecraft tale illustrated by the Cartoon Network animation team." - El Moos, Big Glasgow Comic Page
"This is a very interesting and worthwhile comic all around, with a great story and vivid artwork. If you’re into horror/comedy, with an appreciation for Lovecraft, you’ll want to check out Wart." - Fanboy Comics
"Horror books don’t all have to be all about bloody ink splatters and dismembered body parts. With Wart, Welsh and Al Chalabi have created a series that mixes the horrific with the humorous without either seeming out of place. All of which creates a gleefully ghoulish series as a result!" - Pipedream Comics
"I love how it is both cartoonish and still super creepy. Ammar does some great stuff with his lines, the water, and the squishy evilness of the elder creatures. Even his rats are both grotesque and loveable. Chris writes a smooth story and draws us deep into a world where nothing is at it seems and reality is just a state of mind." - ComicBooked.com
We've set our goal at £1234. That's how much we need to print everything and get all rewards made etc, and to cover P&P. Also it looks nice. But that doesn't mean we haven't planned ahead...
Although we want to keep this Kickstarter nice and simple we do have some cool stretch goals in mind if we reach certain numbers. Have a look:
£2500 - Everyone who pledges will receive a digital mini comic written and drawn by the WART team called HORROR IN SPACE. Inspired by this artwork by Ammar, Chris wrote the story which will be drawn and included for everyone.
£3000 - Everyone will receive a digital preview of the new graphic novel which is also written and drawn by the WART team called AMERICAN MALEVOLENCE. This comic started as a movie script written by Chris but changed to a comic script. Ammar made a preview of 17 pages and everything is coloured by Juliette Heeren (juheeren.nl)
DIGITAL BOOKS We want you to be able to read these with as little fuss as possible, so we'll send you them in .cbz and .pdf format. One of those should open on whatever device you read comics on. The files are DRM-free so you can do whatever you want with them (except, y'know, sell them).
PRINT BOOKS They'll be printed to the same high-quality as our first three. A real collectible item.
ART PRINT by Ammar. Choose your favourite!
KICKSTARTER-EXCLUSIVE A3 POSTER We'll be revealing this at the midpoint of the campaign. It's Being designed as we speak. Keep yer eyes peeled.
T-SHIRT Stop being topless! Get yourself an excellent t-shirt to wear. We have male and female fits, and a range of sizes from S to XL for both. It looks like this:
PERSONALISED SKETCH BY AMMAR You can even be in it. Just send us over some pictures of you (or whoever you want to be in it) and we'll do the rest. Here's one he did of Chris being chastised by Bruce Campbell (WHICH NEVER HAPPENED, FYI.)
RETAILER PACKAGE If you have a shop we'll send you 10x Wart Bundles. Each bundle has Books 1, 2, and 3 in them. Plus some extra posters and prints to sell, giveaway or just for advertising purposes. Each book will be signed by writer and artist too.

Warning: Here be potential spoilers. They aren't sequential, we didn't want to give too much away, but read ahead at your own peril...

Risks and challenges
We now have 2 successful WART Kickstarters under our belt (even more with our other projects!). We have learned a lot and will make sure this Kickstarter runs as smoothly as possible.
As for book 4, it's completely finished.
All the pages, the cover, even the production of the book is 100% complete and ready to go to the printers. We know where we want to print it and as soon as we this Kickstarter is successful we will send the files over.
Full disclosure: Chris recently had some delays with the final book of his series NESS. It was delayed a while. However, the mistakes were avoidable and he's learned a lot of lessons. It won't be happening here.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
