UPDATE: We seem to have hit our target, so the 'Stretch Goals' section down below now has some content! Exclusive prints, badges, and more.
WART is an original horror comic series starring Wart Bellamy, an unfortunate young fellow ripped from his reality and tossed into a mysterious, other-worldly 'Asylum for the Belligerently Insane'.
It has monsters, cults, ghosts, rats and a shady doctor in charge of the whole thing. Wart's story takes him through multiple dimensions that threaten both his physical health and his crumbling sanity. Along the way he makes friends, enemies and gets incrementally closer to finding out just what the hell is going on.
Book One collects the first three 10-page 'parts' of the comic. In addition to those there is an exclusive part 3.5 which only appears in the book! It also contains some sketches and extra art.
Book Two will collect parts 4 and 5 together: two huge parts which continue the madness. It will also include an exclusive story (Part 5.5) which will only ever be in the book!
Keep scrolling for some great reviews of Book One.
We're inspired by the work of HP Lovecraft and gothic/cosmic horror, but also committed to not taking ourselves too seriously, as best evidenced by the hapless cult who show up in Book One and Ammar's breezy art style. WART is all our own work; outside a couple of (hopefully) clever nods and homages everything in the book comes straight out of our heads. Chris Welsh writes all of the words and decides the order they go in, and Ammar Al-Chalabi handles all art and lettering.
Why are we Kickstarting?
Our plan is to offer our work at sensible prices to people who find it interesting. We're not paying ourselves, and any money raised by the Kickstarter will go straight into printing to fulfil the promised rewards, and anything over will be piled back into the comic in one way or another. (Unless we make an absolutely obscene amount of money, in which case we might buy ourselves a beer or two).
The rewards are kept as low as they can be whilst still covering costs; we don't believe in ripping anybody off, and especially not anybody kind enough to throw their hard-earned cash into supporting us and our work.
WART only exists thanks to the wonder of the Internet. Without it, I’d be some unknown writer guy who wanted to write a comic and Ammar would be a cool artist with no script.
We ‘met’ on the internet over a year ago after Ammar posted an advert on Reddit about wanting to work with a writer. I replied and then, a few months later, we had part of a comic done without ever having met in person. Through a surprisingly organic process, we shaped it from a rough idea into a story with a backbone and heart. And monsters. A lot of giant monsters.
In the year we've worked together we've taken WART to a number of UK Comic Conventions, met fans, had a lot of fun, and even eventually met in person - at Nottingham Comic Con. Thankfully, we didn't instantly hate each other, so Wart can continue! Next year we're aiming for at least one convention visit a month, including our first ever international one, the Dutch Comic Con in March!
Chris Welsh - Writer
Chris is a novelist/screenwriter/comic writer/columnist/’anything that has words in’ writer. He lives in Liverpool, England with his beloved laptop and too many books. He mostly writes horror, mostly, with dashes of comedy, sci-fi and fantasy. If only he could pick one damn genre, he might be more successful. That's him in the video up top acting all awkward. Sorry about that.
His writing has been called 'witty' (by Ammar) and 'perfectly fine I suppose' (by his old high school English teacher, about 12 years ago).
Ammar Al-Chalabi - Artist/Letterer
Ammar is a professional graphic designer by day and an illustrator by night, so his tablet pencil has permanently fused with his hand (making him a slightly less cool Ash from Evil Dead).
Some of his work can be found on zombieburger.com. He has worked with professional metal bands and production companies.
After reading way too many H.P. Lovecraft stories and slowly going mad he was finally inspired to create his own setting and stories in the wonderful genre that is cosmic horror.
Ammar was last seen starting a doomsday cult in his home country the Netherlands but hasn't yet left the first bar…

£1650 - every backer with a posted reward will receive an EXCLUSIVE 'Thank You' postcard. That may not sound like much, but trust me, you'll want to see this. The design won't be revealed until you actually open the package and see it, but it's great. (Anyone who has backed us digitally will get this in an email.)
£1750 - Badges. Everyone gets a couple of badges thrown in. We're looking at decent-sized square badges because, well, I don't have any square badges and squares seem cooler than circles.
£1850 - Another exclusive, this time for everyone who has pledged more than £20. It'll be a signed, printed sketch from Ammar. (By printed we mean 'not the original hand-drawn copy, a replica, but still awesome').
£2000 - A secret thing we'll reveal if we get this far.
So, help us hit our new goals and you'll get some awesome stuff without having to dig any deeper into your pockets!
The first few rewards are pretty straight forward. You pledge, we send you the basic stuff - digital books that look amazing on tablet computers, real-life books you can roll up and swat flies with, posters to cover up worrying cracks in walls, etc.
(It's worth noting, again, that the books have exclusive content and story in them that will never ever - not in a million years - be on the website.)
But some of the later ones might need a tiny bit of explanation. So:
The EXCLUSIVE poster.
A3 sized loveliness. We've had a great idea for a poster. A different style from the other two, and we'll only ever sell it via this Kickstarter. We'll print however many we need to send out and then destroy the file in a haunting, emotional ceremony involving fire and chanting.
This nets you a hand-drawn A4 sketch of you (or whoever you nominate - we'll probably need you to send pictures) trapped in the asylum. With you will be your own personalised monster! Either tell us your fears and we'll come up with something, or leave it to Ammar's crazy imagination.
BE IN WART
Want to be in the book? With this reward you'll get both books (paper and digital), all three posters INCLUDING the Kickstarter exclusive one, PLUS - we'll put you in a scene in Book Three. No solid plans as of yet, but expect to appear in an asylum cell with some sort of absurd, terrifying beast...
Pick this reward, send us some pictures, tell us your deepest darkest fears and we'll put you in the book.
NEED A HAND?
Chris is no expert, but he knows more than he looks like he would. If you've got anything you're working on and want some feedback on, get this reward and he'll do what he can to help. If you have an idea for a film you want to talk about or even a finished comic script you want feedback on, he'll do his best to help you out/motivate you/fix it up/get it made etc. (Just don't send me any full novels, please, I have enough to read as it is! - Chris)
You're probably wearing one right now. It's one of those, but with an exclusive WART design we'll be revealing in the next week or so. Available in all sizes, Male and Female fits, and in a number of colours (normal ones, like white and red etc...we're not gonna throw Teal or Mauve at you.)
We'll send you a little quiz when the KS ends to collect your info.
The FUNKO POP Vinyl Figure
They're everywhere, these things. Every TV show and film has their own line and, well, we feel Wart is a little left out. Luckily you can get completely blank ones and, with a bit of modelling putty and some paint, we can make a Wart one. Then we'll send it to you.
LIMITED TO THREE!
WANT SOME ADD-ONS? WE GOT ADD-ONS!
If the rewards we've set out don't quite do it for you, or if there's some combo we're not offering, this should help to sort that out. Just add the amount to what you pay, and let us know how you want the extra money spent in the survey you'll receive after the Kickstarter has ended.
The prices below include postage to any UK address - for anywhere else in the world, please add the amount in brackets. Thanks!
T-Shirt - £18 (£20 outside of UK)
Custom Sketch - £35 (£37 outside of UK)
Help - £30 (No extra postage)
Exclusive Poster - £6 (£8 outside of UK)
Five Stickers - £2.50 (£3.50 outside of UK)
You can always add these things after making your initial pledge by increasing the amount, if you decide later on that you want a t shirt or anything like that.
So that's everything. If you've got any questions, or want to ask why we aren't doing a certain type of reward, either leave us a comment or drop us a line at one of the below things:
Risks and challenges
The content for Book One is 100% done and ready to go to print, and Book Two is over half way there - it's already written, Ammar is just creating the art. You can see our work at www.wartcomic.com.
Quotes have been raised to cover everything we'll need printed/made and the total costs have been taken into account when we set the Kickstarter goal amount. We've asked for just what it will cost to cover production of the rewards - any money raised will be folded right back into making more comics.
We see this Kickstarter as a way for people to discover our work and pre-order the books, and we really believe in giving people value for money. We've been working on WART for over a year now and have no intention of stopping.
Though we don't foresee any setbacks, if any should arise we plan to be very open and honest with backers, and fix any problems as quickly and efficiently as possible.
If something huge happens, like the world ends or one/both of us is mauled to death by ocelots (the fox-eared assholes), we'll pivot and make plans accordingly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
