Parts: Graveyard Shift, the Adventures of Carson Dudley Book 3
Parts Are Not Always Parts...
…especially when they're not attached where they normally are. Then they're weird. And freaky. And shocking. And sometimes downright deadly. Someone in Las Calamas is doing his darndest to jam the streets full of all of it and he doesn't care where the parts are coming from: living, dead or otherwise. Caught in the crosshairs of a Mad Scientist and his eery creations, Carson and the Gang have their hands full. Still facing the mystery of the enigmatic and now actively hostile Curio Shop, the fledgling monster hunters are faced with a mounting body count, stitched horrors and a shadowy new threat that seems bent on making Las Calamas its very own biological play ground of science gone bad – very very bad. Mix in a healthy dose of work worries, relationship troubles, mysterious secrets, dire prophecies, police investigations, arrests, diets and even a Ghost from the past and it's no wonder everything and everyone is driven right to the edge. And when it all goes crashing over, the only thing left will be broken, tangled, bloody... Parts!
The third book in a decidedly different horror comedy series about a guy, his baseball bat, and things that go bump in the night.
In an ordinary city... In an ordinary neighborhood... In an ordinary store...
For an ordinary clerk... Things are about to get FREAKIN' NUTS!!
What Is This Kickstarter All About?!
Good question! The purpose of this Kickstarter is plain and simple: to produce Parts, Book 3 in the Graveyard Shift Series, a collection of supernatural adventure comedy novels created by author Chris Weedin. It's also a great way to get yourself drawn into this compelling, reader-driven universe... and maybe even written into a book!
What is Parts All About?
In Parts, we rejoin our motley team of 24/7 Mini-Mart regulars, led by the recklessly courageous, wise-cracking and recently promoted night manager Carson Dudley and his faithful baseball bat. Fresh off their narrow victory over the zombified hordes of the Warlord of Death, spawned by the rival Super Maxi-Pad mini-mart franchise, Carson and the self-proclaimed "Monster Whackers" charge headlong into the latest threat to Las Calamas... SCIENCE! Only this is no ordinary science - it's the bad I'm-a-super-evil-genius-and-can-create-my-own-stitched-nightmares-and-terrorize-the-city-with-impunity type of science.
Plus, in this book... SOMEONE DIES!!!
Overflowing with action, humor, monsters, white-knuckle tension, mystery and believable, breakable, real-life, down-to-earth people, Parts takes the story - and the characters - right to the edge. It's Good vs. Evil, where monsters are real, corn dogs are fresh and sometimes regular, honest hard-working people have gotta stand up and lay the smack down.
But don't take my word for it... grab Chapter One FREE and see for yourself!
Welcome to the Graveyard Shift
Parts is Book 3 in an ongoing series of novels titled Graveyard Shift, the Adventures of Carson Dudley. So what's it all about?! Glad you asked!
The short answer is this: shotguns, corn dogs, baseball bats, angry nuns and things that go bump in the night.
Irreverent, funny, chock spanking full of all things geeky and good (Star Wars, Star Trek, RPG's, online gaming, board and card games, junk food, superheroes, etc.) Graveyard Shift is an adventure comedy series for the Regular Joe. If you've ever wanted smack evil on the back of the head with a baseball bat because you got tired of watching it walk all over folks, then this series is for you.
A Quick Overview of the Shift
Each novel in the Graveyard Shift series (seven novels planned) will feature a new supernatural threat, ever-deepening character backgrounds, personal challenges and shocking revelations into the growing, sinister threat to Las Calamas, CA. Based around the life of Carson Dudley, daring do-gooder and faithful mini-mart employee, the series is set in the fictional (for now) 24/7 Mini-Mart, home base for Carson and his intrepid crew of Monster Whackers.
While the series is already in full swing with two books down, now's the perfect time to catch up! If you're just joining us, let me tell you what you've missed so far:
Book 1: Midnight Snack
Working the night shift at the neighborhood 24/7, Carson Dudley has seen his share of weird – but never the kind that tries to kill you, drain all your blood and stuff your body in a dumpster. Something has moved into the neighborhood and is turning latenight snackers into latenight snacks, leaving a bloody trail of bodies through the quiet, peaceful seaside city of Las Calamas. With his trusty baseball bat and an unlikely collection of would-be battlers of the supernatural – a techie co-ed with a shady past, a trigger-happy rent-a-cop and an aging nun with anger management issues – it's up to Carson to uncover the evil that threatens his beloved mini-mart and put it down once and for all... before he becomes the next Midnight Snack!
Book 2: Another Rotten Night
Something's Rotten in Las Calamas... and it ain't the corn dogs! After defeating the fiendish vampire Vanessa, Carson returns to his beloved 24/7 only to find it threatened by a new foe - this one older, meaner and a whole lot stinkier. Caught in the grip of this evil and a merciless summer heat wave, Las Calamas sizzles with suspense, mystery and danger as Carson faces eery events, new management, a trainee, the undead, betrayal, ancient curses, Banana Yoo-hoo and a sinister old nemesis - the Curio Shop! With corporate execs breathing down his neck, zombie ninjas (and worse) lurking in the shadows and his friends tangled up in troubles of their own, for Carson Dudley, it's bound to be... Another Rotten Night!
**Want the first two books with this Kickstarter? No Prob! Just pick the "THREE FINGER DISCOUNT" Reward level and you'll get all three - autographed even! OR add $25 to any other Reward level (and include a message to that effect) and I'll send them with your stuff!
Inspired by the Movies You Love: Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead, Tremors and Other Horror-Comedy Goodness
If you've seen those movies and loved 'em, then you already know what Graveyard Shift is all about. Inspired by tongue-in-cheek, action-oriented, character driven movies, this series features all the running-around-screaming, monster fighting, pant-wetting, laugh-out-loud horror comedy you've come to love. If you cheer when the guy runs down the middle of the street when he could just duck into a building or when the cheerleader heads into the woods alone at night because she "heard a noise out there" then you're in the right place. As one reviewer puts it:
If you like "Mega Shark vs. (Giant) Octopus" type movies... you
will enjoy this book. It has that same kind of fascination... you can't
stop reading it.
Any Resemblance to Person's Living Or Dead... Is AWESOME!
Okay, I gotta admit - one of my absolute favorite parts about being an author is tossing friends, family (and sometimes complete strangers) into my books.
And then killing them.
Sure, being in my novels isn't always fatal, but 90% is a pretty good average. That's my way of telling people how important they are to me and tipping my hat to the whole horror-comedy genre (my therapist says it's good for me to admit that). After all, some of our fondest memories in those flicks are the characters who get croaked, right? Right! Here are some of the folks I've whacked in the past, just to prove I'm serious:
- Both of my childhood best friends
- Former boss
- Former co-worker
- Gaming buddy
- My wife
- Some guy who paid $75 for it in a silent auction
So... wanna get in on the action? Do YOU wanna get in a book... and get killed?! Thanks to this Kickstarter, you CAN! Check out the backer rewards for ways YOU can get into the books... and get killed!
A Movie Deal... You're Kidding?!
Nope - it's true. A couple years ago some uppity, unruly film company that just didn't know any better bought the movie rights for Book 1, Midnight Snack. Graveyard Shift on the big screen... scary, ain't it? You know what's even scarier?
They hired me to write the screenplay.
So I did.
After a couple years in development, other projects got in the way, though. Now the rights are back in my pocket and I'm in talks with a couple of production outfits to see if we can get things rolling again. So the groundwork is laid, the screenplay is written... who knows? Someday soon you could see COMING SOON: GRAVEYARD SHIFT on a billboard near you!

We started the fun already, with the 24/7 Slogan Contest back in September! Fans submitted tongue-in-cheek slogans for Carson's mini-mart HQ and we picked the best one... then slapped it all over the merchandise for this Kickstarter! It's in the book, the winner is in the credits and now it's part of the Graveyard Shift universe... forever!
Think about it - once Parts is out, you might be able to point to some page and say to your friend "Hey, bro... I made up that name. Yeah. In fact, I practically wrote the whole book..."
Hmm. Okay, so don't get carried away. But get involved! Get your backing done and wait for your chance to shape the novels.

If you've already read the Backer Levels then you're probably wondering about this one. Here's the deal: as you rack up Citizen Points (CP for short), you'll start earning jobs in Las Calamas (fake! not real) and we'll ship you your very own Las Calamas Driver License (fake! not real).
You can earn CP by backing the book (real! not fake), but it doesn't end there. After the project is funded there will be plenty of chances to get more CP by completing quirky, zany achievements (aka "productivity milestones" per Ross Kinkade!). As you accumulate more and more points, you'll get promotions and rise through well-known Las Calamas businesses. Go high enough and you can end up working (gasp!) at the 24/7 Mini-Mart alongside your favorite monster-busting night manager!
Track your progress online at the Las Calamas Visitors and Convention Bureau blog, show off your achievements and rank to your friends and also become eligible to enter contests, get your name in short stories or blog posts and win exclusive stuff, all ongoing after the Kickstarter wraps up. You can even participate in special online games like the Lottery of Death! The more CP you get, the better chance you'll have to appear in Graveyard Shift content.
ID numbers will be handed out in order of backers received, so jump in quick to get the coveted lower numbers! And hold onto those Driver Licences... they'll even get you to the front of the line at any of my author signings or backstage at speaking engagements. Hoorah!
Here's a quick and dirty breakdown of what you can expect with the different CP levels (check out the actual stores and shops on the Las Calamas Visitors and Convention Bureau Blog):

This is it - the money shot. Make your own bad self a permanent addition to the Graveyard Shift Universe! Depending on your reward level, you could be included as a bit part or primary character in Parts or even a full-fledged cast member in Book 4, Hellride! We'll work together to concept your character, including your own name (or an alias if you prefer) as well as your physical appearance, mannerisms, etc. It's YOU, baby! Note the special T-shirt options too: those are custom, one-of-a-kind shirts that will include the name of the book and the exact page where you croak. Amaze your friends! Impress that special someone! We'll also paste you all across my social media outlets, the Chris Weedin Blog and even contact your local media for you. So get backing, get dead and get ready to brag about it!
At this level you get your business (preferably real but optionally made up) into the Graveyard Shift universe. You even get to be the owner (or make one up). You'll get a picture, bio and permanent entry on the Las Calamas Visitors and Convention Bureau Blog... where other Citizens can join as employees! Your shop name and description will become a staple of the series from here through the rest of the books, appearing as a site of adventure, intrigue and perhaps lunch. Or maybe coffee. Or embalming. Hey, it depends on your shop! Great publicity and a ton of fun.
Personal Author Visits
For those who really like visits from total strangers... the author visit! I will happily travel to your town, village or remote cliffside castle for a little personal hobnob. We can eat, talk, play games, do yoga or paint the floor, it doesn't matter! It's your dime. The main intent of author visits, however, is talking about books, writing, gaming, authoring, screenwriting, faith or whatever. I have a host of popular presentations, lively, informative and humorous, for everything from small groups like book clubs and youth groups to larger ones like entire schools or large bookstores. Just cover travel costs (transportation and lodging, I'll spring for my own food) and I'm yours.

Where the Money Goes

Other Products in the Graveyard Shift Universe
While the novels are frightening good fun, they don't stand alone in the Graveyard Shift mythos. I got my start in creating games and love to weave gaming and novels together, making for a truly immersive experience, where you can play the stories, characters and places that you only read about in other series. Check out this cool stuff!
Horror Rules, the Simply Horrible Roleplaying Game
The Graveyard Shift novels were inspired by my 5-star horror-comedy roleplaying game Horror Rules, a tongue-in-cheek storytelling romp that lets you play those stereo-typical horror movie characters you love so much. It's the game that let's you DIE laughing! Quick to learn, easy to play, for newbs and gamer geeks alike.
Relentless, The Card Game of Non-Stop Zombie Carnage and Lots and Lots of Shooting
When Book 2, Another Rotten Night, wrapped up, I spun off this slick little Zombies vs. Humans card game (courtesy of Crucifiction Games) that picks up the action right where the book left off - with the Zompocalypse! It's quick to learn, easy to play and will have you blasting zombies (or eating brains) before you know it. Check out the official game page for more info.
That's just a taste. Many other games, supplements and such can be found on the Crucifiction Games Website. Check it out - if you dare!

Meet the Team
If it's anything Carson Dudley has learned from the 24/7 Mini-Mart, it's that to get anything done it takes a team. And a crack one at that. I'm happy to say I've learned the same lesson. There's a lot of smarts, savvy, gusto and elbow grease that goes into a project like this, and I've got the crackest team in town. I'd be a jerky jerkface if I didn't introduce them and tell you how amazing they are.
The Amazing Kickstarter Project Team

The Amazing Graveyard Shift Artist
Chris Caprile has been with me for almost 15 years, drawing everything from glowing possessed dogs to Irish Catholic nuns in space suits. He's awesome.
Risks and challenges
As the third book in the series, the challenge is to balance bringing new readers in while still recognizing those who have been with it since the beginning. We want to share the adventure and expand the community and NOT just look at it as a narrow focus or exclusive clique.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
