About this project
100% FUNDED!!! YOU ALL ARE AMAZING! LET'S KEEP IT GOING! EVERY DOLLAR RAISED FROM THIS POINT FORWARD WILL HELP ME LAUNCH A THIRD SEWING PATTERN!!!THE PLAN: Hi, I’m Christine Haynes! I design clothing for women and I’d like to turn those designs into sewing patterns.
I teach sewing in 3 venues in Los Angeles – Sew LA in Silver Lake, The Urban Craft Center in Santa Monica, and Sew Modern in West LA. I teach all kinds of classes from beginner level projects like totes and pillows, to more intermediate projects like skirts, tops, and dresses. Over the last few years of teaching, I have had some amazing students, some of whom are pictured below.
But both my students and I are ready to move on! I have a stock pile of designs I’ve made over the years and lots of new ideas. What I’d like to do next with those designs is to launch them into a line of sewing patterns.
WHY I CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN: I started my sewing business about 7 years ago, when I participated in my first craft fair and sold skirts. Those skirts and that craft fair lead to me selling my ready to wear designs in boutiques all over the country. Every piece was designed and sewn by me in my Los Angeles studio. I stayed on that path for many years. I designed and sewed entire collections by myself, participated in fashion shows, and was written up in loads of press, like the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Daily Candy, and more. I even had a shirt I made on NBC's The Today Show!
That success lead to offers to write for craft and sewing magazines, which I still do today. I've written for Craft Magazine, CraftStylish, SewStylish, and Threads Magazine. One of those articles was spotted by an editor at Random House, which lead to my first book called Chic & Simple Sewing.
All the time I spent writing about sewing, took more and more time away from me making ready to wear collections, and that lead to a natural shift to teaching sewing classes. This shift to teaching happened right when the economy dropped and I found that with the turn in the economy, many people rediscovered the joy of making things for themselves, and learning new skills like sewing.
WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR: Print house minimums is usually 1,000 pieces per style. While the cost per print isn’t that high, when you multiply it times 1,000 pieces, it gets costly really quick! And that’s just the printed patterns! I also need the instruction sheets and illustrations, as well as photos of the finished items for people to see what they’d be making. Once totaled, it will cost about $3,000 per design to launch a commercially available sewing pattern.
For this Kickstarter campaign, I’m hoping to raise $6500, which is enough for me to launch the first two of hopefully a lifetime of sewing patterns! Now, on the off chance that we go beyond the first $6500, each additional $3000 raised equals another pattern design. So if I am so lucky as to make my goal, it doesn’t have to end there!
MY DESIGNS: Over the years I’ve developed a clear aesthetic. My designs are feminine, but not too girly, clean and modern, but not boring, and vintage inspired, without looking costumey. I like my designs to be comfortable and most of them are great for both dressing up for a date and dressing down for the beach.
Of my designs, the first two I’ve selected to develop into sewing patterns will be the Chelsea dress and the Derby dress, both pictured below.
HOW YOU CAN HELP!: I have had successes with my business, but coming up with enough money to launch sewing patterns is beyond my means. I am literally a one woman operation. I do all the sewing, designing, writing, and everything myself, and while I’ve been doing all this work for the last few years, I’ve maintained a day job to keep things afloat. I know it’s too much for one woman to do, but I love it and am ready to see it to the next level!
No donation is too small, honestly! And while I do need your help with donations, I also need your help to spread the word. Below the video are links you can use to embed the video on your blog, “like” it on your facebook page, or email it to your friends. At the bottom of my page, I’ve pre-written some tweets for twitter, I’ve created some badges for blogs and websites, and I’ve pre-written some facebook posts with direct links to this Kickstarter page. Super easy, just cut and paste and help spread the word!
In addition to my undying gratitude, I’ve created some yummy thank you gifts in exchanged for your donation! So be sure to cruise the list of gifts and find one that's perfect for you! It's everything from handmade buttons, to totes, to custom garments!
If you've made it all the way to the end, THANK YOU! Thanks for reading this, watching my video, spreading the word, and donating to kick start my line of sewing patterns. I’m passionate about what I do, I have a track record of doing professional projects, and I am a safe and worthy investment.
Thanks so much for your time! Have a great day.
