How it all started.
Hey there! My name is Chris Thomas and I run a small, family business called MADE SOUTH. We create fun things for people who love the South.
A good friend of mine is a publisher of coloring books for adults. We've been talking for several months about how great it is that so many adults are turning back to coloring as a way to be creative and relieve stress. All that talk got me thinking: We should create a coloring book! But what would it be about? A few months ago I woke up in the middle of the night and thought "We should make it about Nashville!"
We want to create a coloring book that not only includes classic Nashville staples like the skyline and Broadway, but we also want to highlight some of our favorite music venues, restaurants, places to stay and visit, and illustrated maps of some of Nashville's great neighborhoods. This coloring book is more of a guide to my favorite city, in the form of a fun and interesting coloring book!
We needed a great illustrator to help make this idea happen. So I reached out to local artist Caleb Faires. Caleb attended our 2015 MADE SOUTH Holiday Market, and I really loved his work. We had coffee and I shared with him the vision for the coloring book that I believed we could create together. His eyes lit up and the ideas started flowing. It was a perfect match made in Nashville!
This 60-page coloring book will be 100% designed, hand-illustrated and printed in Nashville, Tennessee. It will include fun designs that you might not find in your typical coloring book, like a color-by-numbers illustration of the Cantopia Wall at Pinewood Social!
This is a premium coloring book.
For the cover we're using Cougar Opaque Natural in 100 pound cover stock, and we're applying a soft-touch matte laminate so it feels really great in your hand. On the inside we're sticking with Cougar Opaque Natural, but instead of text weight paper, we're using 65 pound cover stock for minimal bleed through. Each page is perforated, and the book measures 9x9. The book will be printed and perfect bound by a 4th generation family print shop in Nashville.
We love Nashville and we love coloring books. We also love kids.
Between our two families we have 9 children, and coloring is such a fun part of childhood. That's why we wanted to find a way to have The Nashville Coloring Book benefit the children of Nashville.
100% of the funds raised through Kickstarter will go to produce the first run of books and to fulfill backer rewards. After the books have been published and all rewards have been fulfilled, $1 from the sale of each book will be donated to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, a world-class pediatric hospital here in Nashville.
Rewards for this project include:
- First-edition copies of The Nashville Coloring Book in various quantities
- Autographed copies of The Nashville Coloring Book
- Original illustrations from the book
- The opportunity to be mentioned on the dedication page
- The opportunity to have yourself drawn into a scene inside the book
- A personal tour of Nashville with Chris & Caleb
Thank you for supporting this project, and for helping to bring The Nashville Coloring Book to life!
Risks and challenges
Our two potential challenges are licensing and print quality.
On licensing, we have a list of illustrations we would like to include in the book, and so far everyone we've spoken with has welcomed the idea of being included. Establishments like Arnold's Country Kitchen, The Johnny Cash Museum, Pinewood Social, The Nashville Sounds and Husk have already given us the go-ahead to include them in the book. But there's always a chance that we run into someone on our list who doesn't want to be involved. In that case we will need to select an alternate image for illustration.
On quality, our printer has produced a prototype of the book plus several sample pages to make sure that the printing and binding are at the level of quality we want. The printer we are working with is a fourth-generation shop in Nashville, and they have a stellar reputation. We will also personally handle logistics for fulfilling rewards. We've built enough buffer into our timeline to allow for some delays and still deliver on time. However, if we have an unexpected challenge, and we’re running behind schedule, you'll be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
