About this project
Filmmaker Christopher Seufert received unprecedented access to the artist Edward Gorey, who has been called "one of America's foremost eccentric geniuses," shooting with Edward from 1996 to his death on April 15, 2000, capturing his life and daily routines.
The documentary has received a letter of support from WGBH for a PBS broadcast version and the Mooncusser Films crew is editing the feature-length version for submission to the Sundance Film Festival in September, 2014 and a theater near you! After 18 years of production this goal and our stretch goals really are crucial.
STRETCH GOAL: $38,000 - $42,000- Coffee table book of interviews and photos will be hard cover and have 10 additional pages. MET!
STRETCH GOAL: $42,000 TO $43,000: We'll be able to license the heretofore unseen WGBH interview and still frames with Edward and Christopher Lydon for the book. MET!
STRETCH GOAL: $43,000 - $47,000- We'll be able to commission additional music for the soundtrack, Classical music that Edward used in his plays. Musicians include the great Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) and Jacqueline Schwab (Ken Burns). MET!
STRETCH GOAL: $47,000 TO $51,500- We'll be able to license footage from CBS Morning News of Edward at work and walking the marshes in Yarmouth.
STRETCH GOAL: $51,500 - $62,000: We'll be able to secure the necessary Errors & Ommissions insurance required for the broadcast version(s) of the film.
STRETCH GOAL: $62,000 - $65,000: We're in talks with Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Erasure) to contribute to the soundtrack CD. This should cover some basic contribution and underscore.
STRETCH GOAL: $65,000 - $78,000: We'll be able to license some images and artwork from the estate to include not only in the documentary but in film promotion and movie posters. Necessary for theatrical distribution!

In the spring and summer of 2014 we have set up a series of rough cut screening events, along with Edward's cousin Ken Morton, who will be sharing his stories of what it was like having this amazing man in his family. We'll be showing the progress we're making in the edit suite and also testing those cuts on a live audience and receiving feedback as part of a Q & A. At each event we're featuring new guests to share their Gorey stories, such as Gorey's puppeteers Le Theatricule Stoic, filmmaker Jon Shea, and musician Siobhan Magnus. See below to attend. Want to bring the rough cut to your hometown? We'd love to. The documentary remains eligible for Sundance if we show it as a rough cut or fundraiser and what we show is substantially different to the final film. Lots of fun extra footage here that will not make it into the final cut.

Risks and challenges
A documentary such as this, about an artist, requires artwork licensing, lawyer fees, and footage licensing from third parties. Edward died before we completed production, and though we have hours of footage, we need to secure some additional media for the sake of the narrative. Typically footage costs $50 per second, which adds up to $15,000 to license just 5 minutes of footage from a third party. We have three such sources that we need to tap for licensing- WGBH (PBS), The Dick Cavett Show, and ABC News. Furthermore, Errors & Ommissions insurance runs about $10,000 if we are able to take advantage of the offer to edit version of the film to air on PBS.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
