Precocious is a daily, newspaper-style comic strip about kids who are too smart for their own (or anyone's) good - and it's ready to unleash its third print collection of comics, Party Crashers! Last year's Kickstarter campaign for book two was a wonderful experience for all, and I know we can top that success this year!
THE FINAL LIST OF STRETCH GOALS IS HERE!
With printing costs paid for, I can turn my dreaming to fancy bonuses! (The first on was a giveaway just for meeting the goal. Every book order gets a special window cling!)
We're in the final run, and here is the full list of stretch goal! And now you know my secret project! The companion book is smaller than the regular books, and will be printed in black and white so I can keep the cost down for the reader.
Bonus art and comics from the stretch goal will be produced after the campaign has ended, and updates will be send via Kickstarter updates as they are completed.
What's in the book?
It's celebration time in year three of Precocious! Not only do many birthdays get enhanced/ruined in delightful ways, but the Precocious crew takes their talents to the big city, to the TV screen, to the Poppinstock Academy for Gifted Children (where they're educated) and back home to their genius-packed community of Gemstone Estates. Oh, and there was one more breakthrough for this year of Precocious. The comics went from black and white to glorious COLOR!
The comics collected in book three cover the range from strips #618 to #1015, over 164 color pages. In addition, you will find creator commentary, a special cast and info section to ensure both established and new readers can pick up the book and enjoy it (Precocious is already written so new reader can pick it up whenever and quickly get into the action), some special "deleted scene" bonus comics not found on the Precocious website, and a print-only bonus birthday-themed story!
And the special stuff?
The joy of doing a Kickstarter campaign is that it lets me set up lovely bonuses! Artist editions are back, which means you get a wonderful book and some wonderful art of your favorite Precocious character drawn inside it! Precocious artist editions are more elaborate than most you will find out there, because I add colored pencil in to give you something that's truly worth collecting! Like with the previous books, these artist editions come with a special bonus. This year I'm creating vinyl window clings, so Precocious cuteness can be there for you at a glance - and let you know some RULES to live by! The proud tradition of including Precocious magnets with every physical book order continues. Since 2013 saw the old Jacob magnet sell out, it's his turn to get the time in the spotlight again!
If you missed the chance to get them last year, this is your time to grab the first two books as well - in a new, revised printing - and complete your collection! Book one, Rule #4: NO Dynamite, and book two, Like Looking in a Fun House Mirror, contains many classic Precocious stories, and you don't want to miss out on the full set!
But wait, there's more!
In addition to the book preorder, I am holding a sale for Precocious original comic pages! There will never be a better time to get your hands on the pen and paper page version of your favorite comics, as I am selling these up to (and sometimes beyond) 50% off from their usual asking price when bundled with the book(s)! The originals available span the range of the all three Precocious print editions. (For more info on the originals click this link. A list of all comics available can also be found further down on this page.)
Details on the rewards!
-The books! Book three, Party Crashers, is 164 pages, in color, with all the bonuses listed above. Book one, Rule #4: No Dynamite, is 158 pages, featuring the first 301 comics of Precocious, and with a giant print-only bonus story about how the Sapphire Lake crew came together! Book two, Like Looking in a Fun House Mirror, is 184 pages, featuring all the comics between books one and two. Bonus features for book two include deleted scenes, a bonus "24 hours awake" story that can't be found online and a section with several comics from the Copper Road spin-off comic. The first two books are printed in black and white, since that's what the comics were at the time.
- Artist editions come with the sketch drawn on the BACK page of the books, since I'm left-handed. When it's time to send out the survey, I will ask you to choose the character you want in the sketch. Artist edition sketches are drawn with color families - blues, grays, pink/purple, red/orange, green/yellow - and I will choose which scheme works best with the idea unless you have a specific request.
-Original comics pages are 17x5", and the comics themselves are 13x4" on the page. They will shipped with backing board, in protective plastic sleeves. You can absolutely ask about the availability of any original comic that you don't see on my list. Once the campaign has concluded, the backer survey will ask those who pledged for originals to list the originals they want the most. I cannot promise that you will get your top choice, unless you pay for the first-choice reward, but I will do my best to match people with their favorites. If you choose a grab-bag option, you might end up with a comic not on the originals list, but I assure you it will be glorious!
-Thanks to reaching the funding goal, it's time to open up for luxuries. The dolls, in the Cupcakes of Bliss gift boxes, are favorites of mine. This year we'll have new characters as doll options, special bonus accessories that correspond to each doll and even new box types! The Gingerbread House is a "friend or foe?" themed box for two doll designs, and you can get a Party Pineapple to carry your doll if you want some variety.
-These gift boxes may be added on to your order. Cupcakes are $30, and Gingerbread Houses are $50. International backers will have to add $15
:-) yay! :-)
Requests and Add-ons:
If you would like to ask about other possible rewards, or you desire a combination of rewards not listed in the current tiers, please message me via Kickstarter. I may add the category for you, or give you the extra cost needed to add on what you want to an existing tier.
General add-on costs: Extra book three: $28. Extra artist edition book three: $45. It's $23 and $40 for additional books and artist editions of books one and two. Extra Precocious original page: $40. Extra Copper Road original page: $55. (If you do not have another original page in your order, you must include an additional $5 for shipping.) If you bought the physical copies of the books, you may add a digital version of it for $5 more! If you want to expand your window cling collection, add $4 for each. (You may make requests if you pay for extras. Otherwise artist edition clings are chosen at random.)
Where is the money going?
Working in color is more costly than black and white, and that means my printing costs are much higher than with previous books. The financial goal includes the cost of printing book three, as well as an allotment for updated printing of the first two books. I need to allocate funds to the printing of bonus items and, of course, to Kickstarter fees and shipping as well. The $7000 base goal is the bare minimum to pull this off. I really hope we're able to meet this and go beyond, as there's more goodness to offer if the funding allows it!
What lies beyond the funding goal?
Part of the fun with Kickstarter is stretch goals. These are the bonuses that I can only provide once finances allow them, but they are lovely and I think we all want to see them! You can look forward to getting a chance at bonus prints/magnets/charms/window clings, extra updates of the Copper Road side comic, the return of Cupcakes of Bliss gift packages (with new doll options!) and, if all goes spectacularly, you can even enable the printing of a super-secret Precocious bonus book!
More on the original comics:
Why is owning an original comic so cool? Not only is it a piece of Precocious history, and a chance to hold the your favorite comics in your hands, but it's a look into the creation process. You can see the blue lines below the ink, allowing you to read the initial script for the comic (they often change slightly) or see how I laid out and changed the posing of a scene, and on some pages you'll find notes and extra scribbles that indicate the thought process behind constructing each comic.
The comics that I've chosen to offer are ones that I feel are strong and worthy of hanging on your walls. I tried to single out iconic strips. Of the offerings, you'll find great art, which would look great when proudly displayed. These pages contain many of Precocious' top jokes, and several key moments of the strip, including many characters' debuts. I did not choose a definitive collection by any means, however, and several iconic comics are not on the offering list. If I have a desired comic available, I will add it to this list at your request!
Here is the list of what's currently up for offer. (The blog post with larger photos of the originals is here.) More will be added upon request. Comic numbers correspond with the Precocious archive page.
Book 3 Comics: #631, #637, #645, #646, #655, #657, #674, #688, #695, #706, #708, #709, #715, #729, #766, #769, #776, #790, #792, #818, #821, #863, #867, #877, #881, #882, #893, #907, #911, #926, #936, #962, #972, #976, #977, #979, #981, #996, #1001

Risks and challenges
The major risk of delay here comes with the printers. Book three is being printed internationally, so there's a risk of a delay with customs. If I discover the books are misprinted or damaged, where will be a delay while they are replaced. Printing risks also extend to other rewards. If something goes wrong with the magnets/window clings/etc, I will either get a replacement printing of them or substitute another bonus item of equal or greater value.
Any reward involving me drawing something requires me to be able to draw it. I've set limits on those tiers to keep my work load reasonable, and if they fill up I can add extra slots with a later delivery period. Random accidents do happen, and I could fall ill, break my arm, or have something else occur that prevents drawing.
If any delays look likely, you will receive prompt updates on the situation and a new timetable. Last year, everyone's orders were sent in a timely fashion. Let's hope for another great success!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
