New Joe R. Lansdale horror novella offered in signed limited edition hardcovers illustrated by surrealist artist Santiago Caruso.

Did you miss our Kickstarter campaign? Black Labyrinth Book II by Joe Lansdale illustrated by Santiago Caruso is set to be released on November 11th, 2014. Visit DarkRegions.com and BlackLabyrinthBooks.com for news and updates regarding the book! Thank you for your interest in our project!

Update (11/10/2013): All new and current backers of $25 or more will receive Black Labyrinth Book I: The Walls of the Castle by Tom Piccirilli including all artwork by Santiago Caruso + HD image download of all artwork from Book I!

Joe will write an original flash fiction story that is in some way connected to the title novella. The story will be included as bonus content in all limited edition hardcovers and the Kickstarter limited edition trade paperback. PDF copies will be sent to all contributors.

If we reach this stretch goal Santiago Caruso will create 8 original color interior illustrations for the book (instead of 4 B&W), a full color book cover, illustrated signature sheets for each limited edition hardcover and illustrate designs for the book itself (chapter headings, footers, page numbers etc.).

Update (11/08/2013): All backers of $200 or more to receive an A4 size signed and numbered print from Santiago Caruso of an interior illustration from Black Labyrinth Book II

This is only the beginning. The author of Black Labyrinth Book III will be revealed first to backers of the Black Labyrinth Book II campaign.

Create a new novella from Joe R. Lansdale, award-winning author of Edge of Dark Water, the Hap and Leonard series, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Bottoms, Incident On and Off a Mountain Road and many other novels, novellas, short stories and comic books. The new novella will be lavishly illustrated by surrealist artist Santiago Caruso and offered in ebook, trade paperback and signed limited edition hardcovers printed on an offset press, Smyth sewn and hand-bound in specialty materials like leatherette and black cowhide.

Black Labyrinth is an imprint of ten psychological horror novels and novellas from the living masters of dark fiction illustrated by surrealist artist Santiago Caruso. The books are available in ebook, trade paperback and signed limited edition hardcovers all featuring multiple interior illustrations and original front cover artwork from the artist.

Book I in the imprint, The Walls of the Castle by Tom Piccirilli, has been met with wide critical acclaim. The novella included four original interior illustrations and original front cover artwork by Santiago Caruso.

One of the signature features of the Black Labyrinth imprint are the signed limited edition hardcovers. The page sheets are printed on an offset press on premium stock paper. The pages are Smyth sewn and the covers are hand-bound in leatherette, bonded leather and cowhide. The books are hot foil stamped on the front covers and spines. Signed by the authors, artist and editor. Feature extras not offered in trade paperback and ebook editions. Limited print runs from 13 to 300 signed copies.

Here is an image of the 200 Signed and Numbered Limited Hardcover edition of Black Labyrinth Book I: The Walls of the Castle by Tom Piccirilli:

Joe Lansdale's Black Labyrinth Book II will be offered in three signed limited edition hardcover states: Flood Black, Dark Mind and Shadow Tome. Detailed edition information can be found below in the "Editions" section. The book will also be offered in trade paperback and ebook editions across all platforms.

Santiago Caruso will create original color front cover artwork and four original B&W interior illustrations for Book II based on the story.

Black Labyrinth Book II: Joe R. Lansdale is slated for publication on November 11th 2014, but will be delivered to Kickstarter contributors at least one month before the publication date.

The titles within the Black Labyrinth imprint are primarily connected by their genre: psychological horror, but also by their intensity, complexity in character and creative vision.

Psychological horror is a genre that focuses on tension and conflict of the mind. Stories that examine the deterioration of a psyche, the battle of an intellect to overcome the horrors within.

Some of the most well-known writers in the world have written tales of psychological horror, including Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, Oscar Wilde, Dean Koontz, Ramsey Campbell, Stephen King and many others. Notable psychological horror stories include: "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, The Shining by Stephen King and House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Joe R. Lansdale will write an original novella of psychological horror and have the manuscript delivered to us by Q2 of 2014. After delivery of the manuscript Santiago Caruso will immediately begin work on the original color front cover artwork and four B&W interior illustrations for the book. Press releases and review copies will begin circulating by July of 2014. After the book has been thoroughly proofread, edited and the design is finalized, the printing of the limited edition hardcovers will begin in Q3 of 2014.

Contributors will be updated regularly on the status of the project, from notes on the production to sketches of proposed interior illustrations by Santiago Caruso and many will be immortalized in the book itself. Supporters of the campaign will be delivered the book at least one month before publication date and are eligible for Kickstarter exclusive rewards.

Join us in creating a new psychological horror story illustrated by a renowned artist of the surreal and fantastique: Santiago Caruso and written by one of the living masters of dark fiction: Joe R. Lansdale.

Black Labyrinth Book II will be a new novella of psychological horror fiction by author Joe R. Lansdale. Here is what Joe has to say about the story for his upcoming Black Labyrinth novella:

" Currently working with Black Labyrinth to create a book of psychological horror, and well, a little bit of overt horror as well. It’s a novella, not a novel, but there will be plenty of room for shadow and sounds, for whatever it takes to scare a reader. What if there is a prison graveyard on an island for the worst of the worst. A place where the unclaimed go. Those who have been executed or died by disease or old age would end up on this island. Taken there by ferry in the middle of the night to be deposited in the ground like rotten rutabaga seeds. And what if on that island are two caretakers, a gravedigger and the ferry man. And with the remains of all that evil there in this dark, lost place in the middle of a great bubble of sea and wind and starry night sky, something goes way damn wrong.

And it isn’t at all what you think it is.

That’s the premise for my novella for Black Labyrinth. The money for the writing of the book, as well as the artwork by Santiago Caruso, the actual construction and publication of the novella will be, hopefully, provided by a Kickstarter program ran by Chris Morey, the editor of Black Labyrinth’s novellas. "

- Joe R. Lansdale

Writing of the new novella will begin upon successful completion of the Kickstarter and will be offered in first edition, limited and often signed editions to our backers. The story will be accompanied by at least five new pieces of artwork from artist Santiago Caruso.

From editor Chris Morey: Book I in the Black Labyrinth Imprint, The Walls of the Castle by Tom Piccirilli was an amazing project and a real learning experience. Critics and readers loved the novella as I did, and they celebrated Santiago’s artwork on and within the book itself.

But there ended up being one big problem: we underestimated the costs of the project and ended up actually losing money on the book.

When we calculated in printing the page sheets on premium paper from an offset press, binding the books in special materials like leatherette and genuine cowhide (the cowhide was especially expensive and labor-intensive for our binder), paying our creative contributors, marketing the book and shipping the books to customers all over the world we did end up losing money on the project. When I found that out… it definitely stung.

That’s why we have decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign for Black Labyrinth Book II by Joe R. Lansdale. This campaign has been designed to fully fund the most necessary components of the project; about 50% of our funding goal will cover the printing, binding and materials needed (remember, these are high-quality hardcovers!).  About 30% will go to paying our creative contributors. 10% will be used to ship the books to our domestic backers (free shipping for them) and to our international backers (discounted rates). The remainder will be dedicated to design, marketing, distribution and review copies (as indicated in the chart above).

Thank you for your consideration and support. We truly look forward to working on this project and bringing you a new novella of psychological horror from the master Joe R. Lansdale accompanied by five new pieces of artwork from Santiago Caruso!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The Black Labyrinth hardcovers are labor intensive. They require printing on an offset press (more expensive and time-consuming than digital printing) and hand-binding in materials like leatherette, bonded leather and cowhide.

We will begin working on the project immediately upon successful completion of the Kickstarter, but delays with a project of this magnitude are always possible, which is why we set the publication date for roughly one year after the completion of the Kickstarter.

Kickstarter contributors will be receiving regular updates as the production of Black Labyrinth Book II progresses and any problems/challenges we might face during the creation of the book.

  • Black Labyrinth Book I: The Walls of the Castle by Tom Piccirilli was an amazing project and we worked hard on it. But it was extremely labor intensive, very expensive and when all is said and done after shipping the books to customers all over the world we actually lost money on the book.

This Kickstarter campaign will ensure Black Labyrinth Book II is fully funded. It has been designed to cover the printing and binding costs of all editions of the book, shipping the editions to customers around the world and paying our creative contributors.

Customers/DRP readers should look at the Kickstarter as a creative way to preorder Black Labyrinth Book II.
