About

Linux Power Features for iPhone and iPad

QMole allows iPhones and iPads to run graphical Linux applications. It enables touch-screen operation of Linux applications executing together with native iOS applications on a self contained Linux style desktop. This desktop introduces automatic window management for the touch screen and enables full access to the data on your i-device

The smartphone and tablet computer made computing easily accessible to a greater number of non computer users than any computing platform has done in the history of IT.  Physical convenience and novel applications have combined with unrivaled ease of access to produce what is likely the world's biggest consumer base of computing technology ever. But the ease of access in particular has come at the cost of reducing choice for the professional user. The professional user also appreciates the convenience but wants to retain the power features of platforms like Linux. QMole aims to bring these power features to the smartphone platform, the one platform already carried by millions: iPhone and iPad.

QMole Architecture

What is in an operating system? QMole is a hybrid. It is not a virtualization solution like VMWare or VirtualBox. Neither is it an operating system. It requires no new API of application developers, as does iOS. QMole sandwiches applications in standard Linux abstraction on one side and provides touch screen abstractions and window management on the other side. This provides re-usability of Linux applications.

In architectural terms, QMole occupies a space somewhere between BSD and Linux, but based on the Darwin kernel. Below is the Linux architecture according to Wikipedia with QMole superimposed as highlighted.
