I think if we could have done it, we would have used concrete to make the light switches. N. Michael McKinnell

The Heroic Project

At a time when concrete buildings across the United States are widely disparaged and in danger of insensitive renovation or demolition, the Heroic Project surveys the original aspirations of the 1960s and 1970s, recorded through the lens of Boston’s transformation. After nearly eight years of research and advocacy, with your help we can complete fundraising for a book (scheduled to be published by The Monacelli Press in October 2015) documenting Boston’s unparalleled collection of concrete structures and an expanded web archive that will provide an ongoing platform to consider anew the legacies of these works and others like them across North America.

Often labeled with the misleading term “Brutalist,” these buildings were conceived with progressive-minded intentions by some of the world's most influential architects, including Marcel Breuer, Henry Cobb, Araldo Cossutta, Gerhard Kallmann and Michael McKinnell, Le Corbusier, I. M. Pei, Paul Rudolph, Josep Lluís Sert, and The Architects Collaborative. We have commissioned essays by historians Joan Ockman, Lizabeth Cohen, Keith Morgan, and Douglass Shand-Tucci, and conducted interviews with Cossutta, Cobb, McKinnell as well as prominent local protagonists such as Peter Chermayeff, Tician Papachristou, Tad Stahl, and Mary Otis Stevens.

If you care about Heroic concrete architecture, we invite you to support this effort to reshape discourse around the importance of these buildings not only in Boston but across the nation.

Project History

The Heroic Project began in 2007, when Boston’s mayor at the time, Thomas M. Menino, called for the demolition and/or sale of Boston City Hall. This event galvanized the local architecture community and prompted us to consider more closely the remarkable collection of concrete buildings located in Boston. Two years later, we developed an exhibition at pinkcomma gallery of our initial documentation of these buildings under the title Heroic, launching the expanded research effort that has culminated in the Heroic Project. This fundraising effort will allow us to finalize the book and develop a web archive of additional content for public consumption.

We have received grants from a number of organizations to help with the production of the book—including the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, zan foundation, Bruner/Cott, and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger. The final push with this fundraising effort is to cover the high costs of photography rights, archival fees, and other expenses for the book, as well as providing seed funding to initiate the website.

The Book

Heroic: Concrete Architecture and the New Boston will be available in October, 2015 from The Monacelli Press. At 336 pages and with more than 260 illustrations drawn from a dozen historical archives or produced especially for the book, Heroic offers one the first comprehensive studies of the impact of concrete architecture in the United States. It includes essays by historians, interviews with architects from the time period, and examples of thirty buildings crucial to Boston’s reemergence.

The Site

For a while during the postwar era, there was openness, collegiality—and so much became possible. —Mary Otis Stevens

Our distance from the heyday of concrete construction further complicates the perception of such buildings, which are generally looked at with disdain. There have been several high-profile cases across the country of Heroic buildings facing demolition: Bertrand Goldberg’s Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago (demolished 2014), John Johansen’s Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore (demolished 2014), Araldo Cossutta’s Third Church of Christ, Scientist in Washington, D.C. (demolished 2014), and Paul Rudolph’s Orange County Government Center in Goshen (in danger of demolition).

Greater Boston has already lost several works, including Minoru Yamasaki’s Eastern Airlines Terminal at Logan Airport (demolished 2002) and Sert, Jackson & Associates’ Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School (demolished 2014). Others, such as Paul Rudolph’s Blue Cross Blue Shield Building (1957), are in constant peril of removal or insensitive modification based on escalating real estate values that precipitate ever-larger buildings.

Our misperceptions of these buildings are only made more exaggerated by the loss of the voices of those who created them. Since our first exhibition of Heroic in 2009, Gerhard Kallmann, Eduardo Catalano, and Tad Stahl have all passed away. An important goal of this project is to record these voices, to ensure that their buildings are evaluated with a knowledge of their intentions and ideals.

In light of this, we plan to launch a collaborative online presence that will expand on our Boston work, and gather information of similar significant buildings throughout North America, highlighting the need for reevaluation of this significant architectural era. By creating a central repository, we have the opportunity to increase the volume on efforts to save some of these structures.

Riesgos y desafíos

There is not a lot of risk here. The book is nearly done and will be in your hands by November (publishing date is October, but give us a buffer to ship!). We have also started work on the website, and are using a robust CMS to catalog these buildings. Your support will help in the completion and unveiling of the site shortly after the book launch.
