Spud's Quest is a puzzle adventure game for Windows (and hopefully XNA, Android and iOS) that draws it's inspiration from retro classics like the Dizzy series, The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. The game is currently about 70% complete, but it won't happen without YOUR help.
When I first got into gaming, it was with a ZX Spectrum. Back then, you couldn't gloss over a shoddy game with fancy graphics, millions of polygons, or a booming orchestral score. Impossible. Back then, everything was stripped back to the most important thing of all- gameplay.
An adventure game had to be filled with characters and locations that sparked my imagination, puzzles that picked at my brains (even after I'd stopped playing), and obstacles that made me curious to the point of frustration to know just what lay beyond on the next screen. That was my golden age of gaming, and that's what I'm attempting to bring back with Spud's Quest.
Players take on the role of Spud and his friend Prince Charming, who has been cursed by an evil wizard and turned into a frog. The pair set on a journey to uncover four ancient stones that have the power to banish the evil and remove the curse.
(Warning: Contains lethal mixed doses of fairy tales, Arthurian legend, and Greek, Norse & Mayan mythology. Do not pledge if you are allergic to any of these.)
Some of the games features:
- A large fantasy game world featuring varied locales and characters
- Four dungeons brimming with puzzles and enemies
- Day / night / weather system that affects characters schedules
- Abilities / Powerups to further your progress
- Control switching mechanic (spud / frog)
Like the Dizzy games, it's a flip screen adventure in which you use items to progress (eg. use a hatchet found in a woodcutters lodge on a tree elsewhere to form a bridge over a swamp). Kind of like a point and click adventure game, without the point and click. It has powerups & abilities like Metroid, and the Zelda/Tomb Raider inspirations come in the games four temples (More info on temples in UPDATE #4).

Finding the time to work on this while trying to make a self-employed living has become close to impossible. The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to [hopefully] raise enough money to allow me to live, work on and finally complete Spuds Quest. I'd like to make it my full-time job for just a few months so that I can finally complete it and get this 10 year project out their for you to enjoy.
I'm not asking for a mansion or a Ferrari- £5,000 is a reasonably moderate amount. With appropriate funding I aim to have the game completed around March 2013.

Risks and challenges
The bulk of the game and engine is already there. the challenge is having the time to fill what's left with interesting locations, characters and puzzles- a challenge which funding would give me the time to do.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
