This project duplicates what electric utilities have done for decades on a smaller (consumer) scale. A significant recurring expense for all of us is electric energy. Trimming cost by 20-40% is possible and requires little sacrifice so it is much like an investment. In addition to reducing losses, anomalies are discovered that result in much greater loss prevention. An example is a leaking pipe (hidden) causing a well pump or electric water heater to run excessively. It would show up as a questionable spike in a table or graph. Numerous scenarios involving refrigeration, compressed gasses, multiple users, etc. can be found and documented with substantial losses prevented.

Risks and challenges

Much of the hardware exists and performs exactly as needed in commercial settings. Software development is needed to further web-enable and modernize controls. There is no limit to innovative ways to mine the existing data streams for insightful presentation. Risks may involve regulatory approval in some applications such as submetering tenants.
