2016 is a very special year for me. Not only is it 30 years since I began my professional career as a video game composer, but it also marks the 25th anniversary of legendary platform game Turrican II. As one of my most popular soundtracks ever, I wanted to create something very special to celebrate these anniversaries, and so Turrican II – The Orchestral Album was conceived!
Turrican II – The Orchestral Album will feature nearly an hour of completely new, never before heard, orchestral arrangements of some of the most popular pieces of music from Turrican II. Tracks planned for the album include The Final Fight, Freedom, The Great Bath, Concerto for Lasers and Enemies and The Desert Rocks. We will be revealing more tracks as the project progresses. Depending on the campaign’s success, all backers will get to hear Turrican II’s orchestral beauty from December this year.
We’re very lucky to have secured the hugely talented FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague to perform the music. They are one of the most sought after recording orchestras in Europe and have previously worked on several video game projects, such as the Final Fantasy Orchestral Album and soundtracks to games such as The Elder Scrolls Online, Civilization: Beyond Earth and Halo Wars.
One other aspect that makes Turrican II – The Orchestral Album special is its artwork. We’re working with a very talented team of illustrators and designers to recapture the beauty of the original game. There will be all brand new pieces of art which recreate key scenes from throughout Turrican II in a distinctive Manga style, as originally intended by the game makers.
We’re currently busy working on these and while we only have a few images ready to share, we can assure you there will be many more beautiful pieces for the finished product. These will all be showcased in the CD booklet, however, those pledging for the Deluxe Collector’s Edition Box will receive them as gorgeous, high quality, glossy Fine Art Prints (31,5 x 31,5 cm each); the perfect way to follow Bren McGuire on his adventures!
To help me produce the album I will be working closely with Thomas Böcker, Roger Wanamo and Jonne Valtonen at Merregnon Studios, the team behind some of the most critically acclaimed orchestral video game albums and concerts in the world (Final Symphony, Symphonic Fantasies). They are world experts in the field and some of you may remember their work on both the Turrican Soundtrack Anthology and my previous orchestral concert and album, Symphonic Shades.
We want to create a truly high-quality Collector’s Edition of Turrican II – The Orchestral Album that will include not just the CD and extensive production notes, but also feature a double Vinyl of the album and exclusive new artwork on the packaging. These will be produced to the highest standards possible and will be strictly limited to 1,000 individually numbered copies only! We will not be producing anymore Collector’s Editions, so backing the project will be the only way to secure one.
For fans who cannot get their hands on one of the limited Collector’s Editions in time, we are offering both physical CD and digital download tiers as well. Higher tiers will come with high quality limited edition fine art prints (31,5 x 31,5 cm each) of the artworks, and signed prints of pages from the score. We also have a one-off “super-backer” tier which includes not only your rare chance to attend one of the recording sessions in Prague, but also the actual conductor’s baton used during recording of the album! We have professional shipping plans in place to make sure that all physical rewards are delivered in a timely fashion when they are ready.
Recording orchestral arrangements of video game soundtracks is always a complex and costly process, which is why we need to raise $75,000 to make this project a reality. While the vast majority of that money is needed to hire the orchestra and recording studio, we also need to pay for the artwork, layout, new musical arrangements, post-production and mastering costs, CD, vinyl and backer reward manufacture and associated Kickstarter fees and taxes.
From previous Kickstarter campaigns we discovered it’s much better to use any potential extra income to improve the quality and scope of the existing planned products, rather than adding more and more items and potentially losing focus on what people originally pledged money to support. For that reason, we’re concentrating on just two Stretch Goals for Turrican II – The Orchestral Album, but very important ones nevertheless.
Stretch Goal 1: $100,000
Even more artwork! We will work to produce additional beautiful, original artwork for all the physical album packaging. In addition to the already planned images, we intend to add one specially themed artwork for each of Turrican II’s five distinct game worlds. Even better, Collector’s Edition backers can enjoy the art across an extended Vinyl package, featuring six instead of four pages. Not only that, the final Deluxe Edition Collector’s Box will come with five instead of three exclusive edition prints.
Stretch Goal 2: $150,000
More music! Reach this stretch goal and we will ask all our backers to vote for two additional Turrican II pieces to be arranged for the live orchestra recordings. We will also book a session with professional singers, so that we can add a live choir to some of the featured music.
We will be shipping from Germany, so if you order from another country, you may be responsible for possible import duty or taxes for receiving the package of the Album and other goodies. For more information on the shipping, please also check the Q&A of this campaign. All the artworks shown as part of the Turrican II - The Orchestral Album Kickstarter campaign are in-progress mock-ups created by the artists. They do not represent finished work and may still change significantly before completion of the project.

What’s going to happen to my money if the funding campaign does not reach its goal? Your credit card would only be charged after a successful funding campaign, so nothing will be paid if we don’t reach our goal!
How are you going to orchestrate the original music? Will I still recognize my favorite melodies? With Roger Wanamo and Jonne Valtonen, we have two of the most experienced and globally renowned arrangers of video game music working on the project. Our goal is to faithfully translate the original music to live orchestral pieces. If you ever listened to Symphonic Shades (my concert tribute) or the orchestral Turrican Anthology Suite, you know what quality to expect. As the respected website Video Game Music Online concluded in its review: “This suite is a pure love letter to the series.”
How about a Turrican Live Concert? Absolutely, we would love to produce a concert, and with Merregnon Studios we have the right team to make it happen. While we cannot promise anything at this point, if the Kickstarter campaign is successful we can show orchestras that there is an interest in such event, so please help us and spread the word!
How are you going to handle the shipping? To avoid any damage to your products, we are working with a professional shipping service based in Berlin, Germany. They will handle the shipping with care, and ensure it arrives safely to your home.
Are shipping costs included in the prices? Shipping costs are not included yet, as they greatly depend on the backer’s delivery address. Kickstarter calculates these during the pledging process. Shipping will be from Germany, and costs start from $5 for the CD album, and $10 for the Collector’s Box.
I can’t afford to pledge for the Collector’s Box Edition. Can I still buy the music later? We will be looking to do a commercial, digital release some time after all the backers of this campaign have received the music in advance. Keep in mind, though, that the project cannot be made at all if we don’t reach our funding goal here at Kickstarter. So if you can’t afford the Collector’s Box Edition you might want to consider pledging $30 for the CD album or $15 for the download option. That way the campaign has a much better chance of success and you'll be able to hear the music much sooner.
Can’t I just buy the Collector’s Box Edition after it's released? The whole project can only happen if we meet our funding goal and raise the budget necessary to cover the costs. We will be creating 1,000 – and only 1,000 – individually numbered, highly desirable Collector’s Box Editions, and these will be distributed to fans who pledged at least $50. After the campaign ends, there will be no way to reserve a box set through Kickstarter anymore!
Are you confident you will make the delivery dates? While we can’t legislate for every unforeseen circumstance, we can promise that all our team members have reserved their time for the Turrican II - The Orchestral Album exclusively, and will focus solely on working on this particular project. The orchestra sessions in Prague are confirmed and booked too, so we are ready to go and deliver on time.
Can I buy more than one Collector’s Edition? Currently we are not offering multiple Collector’s Edition per pledge. With only 1,000 copies in production we want to make sure everybody who wants one has a fair chance of getting their own copy.
Can we request a track from the game for the album? Not only one - but two! If our Kickstarter campaign reaches the $150,000 Stretch Goal, we will invite our community to vote for two additional tracks to be orchestrated. The Turrican Soundtrack Anthology campaign received more than $175,000 from fans all over the world, so there’s every chance of reaching this.
Will you reveal more tracks? Definitely. All the tracks we have planned for the album will be revealed during the Kickstarter project. By the time the campaign comes to an end, you will know the full track list for Turrican II - The Orchestral Album.
Will you be doing any tracks from other Turrican games? Sorry, but for this Kickstarter campaign, we are planning to exclusively focus on Turrican II as we celebrate the game’s 25th anniversary this year. But if there is enough an interest from the community and Turrican II - The Orchestral Album is a success, there is always the chance for another project covering more music from the Turrican series later.
Risks and challenges
I have gained a tremendous amount of experience during my two previous successful Kickstarter campaigns (Turrican Soundtrack Anthology and Chris Huelsbeck – The Piano Collection) and, together with the help of Merregnon Studios, we are primed and ready to deliver on all our rewards if we are reaching our funding goal.
Arranging this volume of music for live orchestra is a very time-intensive process, however we have a very experienced, award-winning team and are confident everything will be ready for recording this Autumn and subsequent December 2016 digital release, perfectly in time for the holiday season! Due to the extensive manufacturing process and time of production for vinyl records especially, we currently estimate all CD albums and Collector’s Edition Box Sets will be ready to ship April 2017.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
