About

It started with an extensive YouTube search and ended with me and my Samsung Galaxy phone.

Only 26-minutes left... That's when the kids would return. I was in my classroom looking for children's videos that featured girls who looked like the girls that I was teaching. They were mostly shades of brown - those girls. There was milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate and many other hues.

I wanted them to leave school feeling good about themselves. I wanted those 7-year-olds to hear from girls a little older who had been through what they had been through. I wanted them to see girls who looked like they could be their big sisters on The Big Screen (it was actually a laptop connected to a smartboard, but those screens are really big). It would send a powerful message - not only with what they say, but also by having it come from wonderfully chocolate faces.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find them -- those videos featuring young girls of color. Maybe the problem was my poor search skills. I looked for tags citing affirmation, inspirational, encouraging, positive and others.

My time was up for the day. The bell rang and those girls went home . But my desire for them to see what all kids should be able to see never left me. Never one to complain about a problem without trying to be a part of the solution, I went to work. So over the last couple of months I shot a few videos. And with your help, I hope to make it more than a few.

My goal is to produce better quality videos, bring in additional girls, and cover an even wider arrange of topics that are encouraging to young girls.

We feature in the videos those girls who are underrepresented in the media. Their message can inspire all - young & old, white & black; male or female. See, I love watching inspirational videos, regardless of whether it's presented by a man or women. But I'm able to connect in a different way, when it's presented by a woman. I'm also drawn to a video in yet another way when it's a African American woman. I want our young girls to have that, to see the African American girl as not simply the sidekick, but featured prominently in a video, sharing a positive message.

Our budget is to make additional videos and to spread the word. We're also making lesson plans for teachers, and other leaders who work with kids.

Chocolate Chips is a YouTube channel filled with affirmation videos for girls. Each video is presented by young girls speaking directly to camera. Chocolate Chips targets elementary age girls to inspire, encourage, and empower. The Chocolate Chip girls are there to build up the viewer and remind them that they are precious, unique and valuable. The series is filled with delicious goodness that makes the viewer want to come back for more. It’s sweet, soft and comforting. It speaks to an array of chocolate chips. Through the videos, Chocolate Chips girls are equipped to face each day with confidence and courage. They are challenged to see themselves in a new light, to embrace their potential, and to live with passion, empathy and love.

Risks and challenges

I've spent years creating children's content. I've worked with big budgets and micro budgets. I feel the key is establishing a great team both in front of and behind the camera. The risk is the marketing. Will it be successful, which is defined by reaching a large target audience? Understanding how to target this market can be risky. Do we approach schools with our videos and lesson plans, do we target libraries and/or community centers. Having spent years working at Sesame Street, we worked well by targeting parents of young kids. The philosophy was it we could get the parent's attention - then they would bring in their children. It was accomplished by having celebrities on the show. We don't have that luxury, but we do have social media capabilities that can reach parents on a micro-level without needing the celebrity and broadcast TV appeal.
