I'm Teresa Eng. I'm a fine art photographer who works on long term projects that deal with change whether it's psychological or the naturre of changing cities and countries in relationship to recent history [ Website www.teresa-eng.com Instagram @TeresaEng ]
My project “China Dream” explores the fractured identity of second generation diaspora as they’re straddled between their motherland and birth country.
From 2013 to 2017, I visited China to explore my ancestral roots. My parents were part of the mass exodus of Mainland Chinese who fled to Hong Kong during the Communist revolution in the 1950s.
The project is also an ode to the magics and mistakes of analogue photography. I spent another 2 years experimenting in the colour darkroom to make images that reflected the constant cycles of construction, destruction and reconstruction that I witnessed in China.
The title “China Dream” came from a patriotic calendar that I came across in a newsstand. It’s a political slogan that President Xi Jinping introduced in 2013, where hard work and entrepreneurial spirit will lift up each individual and the nation into prosperity.
Why a Photobook?
I've always loved the photobook as an object. Books allow me to combine the sequencing of images, text and materials together to create a form of visual poety.
I've designed and self-published two other photobooks. Speaking of scars was a finalist for the Aperture Paris Photo First Book Prize.
In addition to the book, I'm offering other rewards including Limited Edition Prints, a poster of Chinese Graffitti and gallery prints
11 x 14 LIMITED EDITION PRINTS
I have four limited edition 11 x 14" prints available to choose from. Each print is signed and titled on reverse and is available in an edition of 50.
The image size is 9’ x 11″ on 11 x 14″ ( 23 x 28cm on 28 x 36cm).
CHINESE GRAFITTI POSTER
The title "Chinese Graffitti" is a nod to George Lucas' film "American Graffitti" This photograph of a giant plant with Chinese names scratched onto the leaves. The poster is B2 size (20 x 28in) printed on 170GSM paper.
The book will be a hardback edition with 120 pages and 70 images. It will be published by Italian publisher Skinnerboox and printed in Italy.
I'm excited to be working with other Chinese Diaspora designers and writers. London-based Chinese designers Twelve are doing the design and layout.
Chinese American writer Vanessa Hua, author of "River of Stars", "Deceit and other Possibilities" and SF Chronicle columnist. has written an essay about the Chinese Diaspora experience.
There will be a book launch for China Dream in the following cities:
- Paris, 2019: Polycopies at Paris Photo
