Protect children from toxic waste, create community-based rain gardens for waste management, and improve the lives of low-income families in Conchali, Chile

Please join us in helping the children and schools of Conchalí take the initial steps to transform their community into THE FIRST ZERO WASTE MUNICIPALITY IN CHILE! The plan also includes recovering of public spaces that are currently used as open dumps, by building a Rain Garden to minimize floods that occur on streets with rainfall.

The Problem / El Problema:

Conchalí is a socially vulnerable urban community with more than 100,000 residents, located in the northern area of Santiago, Chile. The community spends 60% of its budget on waste management but generates more trash than it can dispose of in landfills. Illegal trash dumps riddle many neighborhoods, often appearing on public land next to schools. The trash dumps are ugly, contain toxic materials and present disease and other health risks. When it rains, these open dumps flood, becoming a major health hazard, especially for children.

Nuestro Plan de Acción / Our Action plan:

With your help, we will create a capacity-building pilot program to educate students and instructors at Escuela Sol Naciente in Conchali on waste reduction and management. There are two areas of work:

1) Create and fund a zero-waste educational program to be integrated into the curriculum at Escuela Sol Naciente. This program will be led by Fundación Basura, an NGO that specializes in education and training towards a Zero Waste future. The workshops, for teachers and students, will begin in early 2018, with the goals of creating the curriculum, a student environmental club, and raising awareness around waste management and reduction.

2) Build a rain garden in front of the school in place of the micro dump site, to break the cycle of trash pollution there. The rain garden displaces the trash dump, beautify the area, create a sense of ownership for the surrounding community, and of course, control rain runoff to reduce flooding during precipitation.

Sustainability of project / Sustentabilidad del proyecto:

The sustainability in time of this project is ensured through effective community engagement.
As the students learn about Reduction, Reusing, and Recycle, they become the agents that extend their knowledge with their families, friends, and community. Through this student-based method of community engagement, we hope to spread Zero Waste education not only the wider community of Conchalí but also to other schools and communities in Chile.

All previous strategies at managing waste, including unsustained green points, have been unsuccessful, mainly due to the lack of engagement and ownership of the community members. This plan proposes a creative and cooperative solution that integrates all the diverse actors in the municipality, establishing responsibilities, indicators, and milestones for each step.

Your help is critical for the realization of this pilot.
This accomplishment will impulse future engagement with local governments and institutional donors to replicate and scale Zero Waste education across Chile and other countries.

Who we are / Quienes somos:

We are a group of several organizations, each contributing our strengths to help Escuela Sol Naciente and Conchalí with this pilot.

The Chile-California Council is running the crowdfund campaign, using it’s 501(c)(3) status to make donations tax-deductible, and distributing the funds according to the budget below. UC Davis Center is contributing local project management expertise to ensure the project is carried out as planned and Fundacion Basura is contributing their expertise in zero-waste training and workshops.

    The Budget / El Presupuesto:

We are seeking a total of USD$15,000 for this first pilot, broken down as follows:

    • USD$5,000 to pay for training and workshops from experts at Fundación Basura.
    • USD$5,000 to pay for materials and people to build the rain garden.
    • USD$5,000 to pay for management of the project coordinating all of the participants and involving the Municipality of Conchalí to permit construction as well as the design and execution of the trash management plan.

This crowdfunding is All-or-Nothing. If we do not meet our goal, we receive no funding. Our goal reflects the minimum amount of funds we need to complete this first pilot. If we are fortunate enough to exceed our funding goal, all excess proceeds will be used to replicate this project in another school. There are 18 vulnerable schools in Conchalí, all with severe trash problems, so the more resources we gather the more expansive, and thus sustainable, our impact.

"This wonderful project works with specialists in trash disposal and engineering to reduce toxic trash accumulation, particularly around schools. It is a potentially important effort to educate students and parents about the importance of the environment and their capacity to improve it. We can scale it up to other communities in Chile. Please support this community effort!"

Risks and challenges

The main risk is that the curriculum built in the schools could have barriers to be fully assimilated by all students and the community. However, the experience of Fundación Basura has a track record in achieving a widespread "Zero-Waste Academy contents". Additionally, the curriculum will be constructed with the professors, ensuring that methods and actions per class are proper for the students at each level.

Another risk is related with the community engagement, regarding their commitment to the project. Nevertheless, efforts have been made to test their grade of involvement, we find that they are very interested and willing to participate. Continuous work will be done to maintain their enthusiasm and participation, led by the project manager, the professors, the school children, and the municipality authorities.

Thus, by an interdisciplinary team, the children, teachers, community, and municipality, in this pilot we scope to:
(1) Build Zero-Waste curriculum, scalable to other schools in Conchalí.
(2) Recover public spaces with a Rain Garden in the Sol Naciente School.
(3) Create awareness in the community along with first zero-waste practices in the municipality.
(4) Coordinate a plan between the municipality and the community, on trash management based on zero-waste culture.
(5) Lower the presence of open dumps
(6) Transfer the Zero-Waste project to other municipalities and cities in Chile.

(5) Disminuir micro basurales.
(6) Transferir modelo Conchalí Zero-Waste a otras comunas y ciudades, Conchalí comuna ejemplar.
