Delayed Until 2019

Posted by Chevy Ray Johnston (Creator)

Unfortunately, Ikenfell won't be meeting its originally planned completion date.

This is for a myriad of reasons: medical emergencies, calendar clashes with collaborators, unforeseen pressures from running a team and coding/animating/writing at the same time, overestimating my own abilities, and other production changes that I can't announce yet, amongst other things. These are reasons, not excuses, as a better manager than I would have foreseen this better.

I really wanted to be one of those Kickstarters that met its goal and also was able to deliver a complete game to you all. I couldn't quite make that happen, and the game's is going to be pushed back to some time in the first half of 2019.

I can't say an exact date yet because I'm working with my publisher, Humble Bundle, to figure out exactly when and how we're going to do the launch.  By coordinating, we can make the best marketing push possible, and also figure out the exact feature set we want to ship with, and which extra features/etc. we want to produce post-launch. So unfortunately it's not a thing I can just decide and tell you here, though I wish I could.

I'm very sorry to disappoint my backers, but I hope the finished game surpasses all your expectations, as I've been working ridiculously hard on it for over two years now.

The game is very far along, and already has around 15 hours of story and gameplay, with some exciting revelations, nearly a dozen challenging boss fights, and a myriad of places to visit and puzzles to solve. I'm predicting around ~20 hours of solid gameplay when it is complete, with as little padding as I am able to muster (I don't like padding in my games much).

We will have some exciting news to share over the next few months, as the scope of the project (not the story and gameplay, but somethign else) has increased a bit due to some things we are planning with Humble. I think many of you will be very excited for these announcements, and hopefully it will also help the success of the project when it is complete.

This delay puts me in a bad spot financially, and disappointing fans (and myself) who were hoping for a sooner release hurts deeply. I'm extremely determined to ensure Ikenfell's success, and the biggest part of that is delivering a wonderful game, with robust code, excellent and challenging gameplay, and a powerful story its players will remember.

I will continue to post periodic updates here on Kickstarter, including spoiler-free screenshots and updates about the game's production.

I beg your patience and appreciate it.

Not to be rude, but I don't ever expect Kickstarters to finish when they expect to. A lot of the time they don't really know exactly how long it will take & just estimate, & even the experienced developers still have trouble meeting their deadlines.
Plus, I'd rather you keep working on it till you're satisfied with the project then trying to meet some arbitrary deadline. It's like that saying goes "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad"

      No worries at all!
Take you time and deliver a product with the quality you want it to have.
      Looking forward to it :)

Better a delayed good game than a rushed broken game

don't worry about it! This game's gonna rock, and I'd rather see it be the best it can be!

It's all OK! Take the time you need to make the game as good as you envisioned it and don't worry too much! I follow you on twitter and I've seen you working and working, so I really trust this is for the best and don't mind the little wait! Take care and go for it!!

    6. Stacie on

Do you have a patreon? some people might want to help support you making games in general.

Don't sweat the release date too much. Delays happen, especially on Kickstarter. The biggest thing I'd say is I'd appreciate more communication about setbacks as they're happening, rather than a big negative post due to a bunch of setbacks I hadn't heard about before (maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, and if that's the case, it's entirely on me). It's also easy to say that, but I do understand that when setbacks are happening, often the last thing a person thinks about is sharing them with the world. Still, it does soften the blow of an announcement like this.
Just keep communicating is the takeaway. We all gave you money to support both this project and YOU. We want both to succeed.

      Best of luck moving forward.

No worries!! I'm still pretty excited to play the game. All the wait will be worth it when your masterpiece of a game is complete so don't be too hard on yourself~

I’m excited to play it still! (Also I’ll be done with my degree by then, really you’re saving me from another mode of procrastination!) take your time and make sure you’re happy with the game, rather than pushing its release and having it be less than you wanted or buggy!! Total support from me :)

Delays are never fun, but I'm with everyone else - I'd much rather have a fun, finished game next year than a rushed incomplete game now.

The *only* thing that makes me nervous here is the bit about post-release updates. The way it's written sounds like some things may be missing at release, and then added back later as DLC.

Again, I would much rather wait and have the full experience as you intended it. Best wishes to the whole team!

Dude. This game is probably already amazing and is only going to become more so as you invest extra time into it. No problem whatsoever. I wanna play a game that’s good, not just a game that’s immediately available.

Keep up the solid work! I will wait as long as it takes to play this thang!

      Dearest Chevy,

We believe that no matter how long it takes for you to finish Ikenfell, it will be one of the best games ever made. You're hard work and dedication is so inspiring, and what we've seen so far has captured our hearts and our imagination!

      With love,
      Kath & Kelly

I read the tagline for this all wrong and thought the U.S. President had seized the game and it was delayed. That's why not glancing at email subjects is important.

      No worries, take your time.

    17. Matthew Kuzio

Take your time making your perfect game. We can wait for as long as it takes.
      Good luck and health, Chevy!

As a fan I'm super not concerned about this, still looking forward to what still looks like a super lovely game!

re "This delay puts me in a bad spot financially" -- really hope you're ok!

    19. Lain on

Shit happens. I'll be looking forward to the news in the next months to see what you'll be disclosing for the game.

    20. Clovis on

It's okay, we'll wait for as long as needed, as long as the result is there in the end!

    21. ChromeWisp on

No worries! You know what they say about rushed games after all!

You shouldn't feel bad dude. Estimates are bullshit anyway. There's no way to predict what the future will bring. You're twitter updates show you're not just screwing around and are working hard at this. I'm confident the final product will be great.

Besides, have you SEEN all the games that are clogging up the tail end of 2018? I think this might end up being a good thing in the long run as it wont get drowned by every major AAA and its brother.

    23. Chris Berdoz on

Pssh I don't give a damn it's not out. I had no idea this was behind schedule. I wasn't keeping track of the news. I'd rather it be good than having it right now.

    24. Dimitri Beauchamp on

At least you keep contact with your followers... and that's a huge plus in my book. Take your time, your game is gonna be awesome!

    25. Zev Rothstein on

If the financial situation calls for it, I would not discourage you from doing some sort of early access program. (I may even encourage it as I would like to see more of the game)

    26. Brian Mazurowski on

I honestly didn't realize it had been that long. Keep it up. Wishing the project the best!

    27. Fangamer on

Keep on working hard. Sorry to hear the delay will put you in a rough spot financially. Definitely been there. Good luck powering through, though. It'll be worth it.

    28. Zachary Dender on

I agree with Thomas Marnell. You're not just taking our money and doing nothing with it. You're working hard, learning new skills, and pushing yourself as a content creator. I'm good with supporting that! Keep working hard and I'll be happy to play your game when it's good and ready!

    29. Mikkel Marius Winther on

Bad stuff happens sometimes. If you just concentrate on making the game as awesome as possible I'm sure good things will follow.

Really looking forward to playing the game when it's done. Don't worry about the delay, the important thing is the final product.

I have been following the progress for the last two years on Twitter, and I feel confident that you have been actively working on this project the entire time. That makes me feel much better about this game.

Delays happen, and I would rather a good game delayed than a bad game delivered on time. Many games that get delayed never finish (a couple I have backed on KS), but it is clear to anyone following your progress that you have been moving towards a finished game.

I love what you are doing, keep it up!
