MADE IN YORKSHIRE
A documentary feature film.
Fifty years ago, a group of young men and women took over a derelict trouser factory in a rundown part of Leeds and set about creating what would become one of the world’s greatest television studios.
In the decades that followed, Yorkshire Television made programmes that were viewed across the planet, including many that would shape and define the era in which they were broadcast.
It was a ground-breaking period in television history - for the first time, local news was beamed into millions of homes across the north. There were documentaries that challenged the status quo and changed society, there was pioneering drama and shiny-floor entertainment series - all created within YTV’s Kirkstall Road studios, as it played host to some of the world’s greatest actors and entertainers.
“Made In Yorkshire” is a feature-length documentary film that will, for the first time, tell the incredible, fascinating - and often hilarious - story of the first decade of this northern powerhouse.
To help tell a truly definitive account of the Yorkshire Television story, the producers of Made In Yorkshire have been granted rare and unprecedented access to the ITV Archives.
The production team includes archivists who have an intimate knowledge of the YTV library and have the skill and experience to track down the most fascinating pieces of footage to be found in this precious regional resource.
One of the aims of this film is to unearth these priceless pieces of television history and bring them to a wider audience, in doing so creating a valuable document not just of Yorkshire Television, but life in Yorkshire as a whole.
PURPOSE AND LEGACY
The 29th of July 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of Yorkshire Television. We feel it is the perfect time to reflect on, and celebrate, this special part of Yorkshire history.
To the millions who grew up watching its programmes in those early days, Yorkshire Television remains a very special part of their lives. This film will be filled with nostalgia - a chance to celebrate the rich and varied range of programmes that made us laugh, cry, or think - and also helped us discover, and connect with, the world around us.
It is also an important record of what television used to be like - both on our TV screens and behind the camera.
For the television industry in Yorkshire, the film will be a timely reminder of its roots. A chance to come together and celebrate a company that played a big role in the careers of so many talented programme makers and high profile names.
For students of television and the media, this film will be a vital resource for many years to come.
Through interviews with the key protagonists from YTV’s early years, this film will record for posterity the memories and first hand accounts of those who were there to witness, and help create, TV history. These in-depth interviews will also be a precious resource to preserve for future generations.
PRODUCTION OVERVIEW AND DISTRIBUTION
Made In Yorkshire is a completely independent film production being made with the support and co-operation of ITV Studios.
The film is a passion project for those who care about the story of Yorkshire Television.
The production team - working under the banner of Chevron Films - is made up of programme makers and other TV professionals, many of whom worked at Yorkshire TV for many years.
Pre-production planning on Made In Yorkshire began in June 2017.
Filming on Made In Yorkshire will take place in the Spring and Summer, primarily interviews, with some location shoots and dramatic reconstructions.
Post Production will take place over the summer, aiming to complete the film for Autumn 2018.
The aim is for the film to be shown at a series of special screenings and events throughout October-December, to help mark the 50 year anniversary. We also hope the documentary will be shown at some top film festivals.
There are currently no plans for the film to be broadcast on television, however if the film is a success and the necessary rights and clearances can be paid for, then the film-makers would be open to discussions for other ways in which the film can reach a wider audience.
The vast majority of the team are working voluntarily and for no fee and a lot of the production costs we have also got covered for no fee.
However, a film of this scale does require a certain level of budget to get made and to help us achieve the production values we feel this film deserves.
Costs include props, wardrobe and locations for dramatic reconstructions, crew costs, editing, specialist equipment, media storage, promotional materials, music royalties, graphics and screening costs.
The estimated budget for the film is currently between £20,000 - £25,000. Bearing in mind that the average cost of making a low budget feature-length documentary is £300,000, the film-makers believe this offers fantastic value for money in creating a film that will be watched and enjoyed for generations to come.
Funds will be raised through a combination of crowdfunding, sponsorship and individual donations.
The film-makers are keen to speak with any companies or individuals who are interested in sponsoring the film, making a donation, or working together collaboratively.
There are some fantastic rewards on offer in exchange for your support - from special prints, t-shirts and mugs, to tickets to a VIP Premiere screening, or a copy of the finished film.
