"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."—Robin Williams as John Keating in Dead Poets Society
The Poet and The Book
The poems are written. The photographs are taken. The book is designed. The printer is waiting.
The poet needs YOU:
- to give some loot.
- to spread the word.
- to make this happen.
I have been writing poetry for about three years, sharing my work for free on my website and through my Telephone Pole Project. By posting poems on telephone poles around towns, I bring poetry to the streets with the aim exposing people to an art form too often relegated to circles of high-brow snobbery.
Now, I turn to a more traditional publishing method for poetry: the chapbook. And I need your assistance.
"We Must Fight to Run Away" features only original content: 18 poems and 18 color photographs, all working together to tell an unconventional and provocative tale.
The chapbook explores how words (the sound, look and feel of words combined), juxtaposed with roaming imagery, serve as an experiment in meaning. This is an organism that evolves, transforms even, only in the hands of the reader.
Rosa Ramos, a graphic designer for the Savannah College of Art and Design, designed the 44-page book with a clean, visually appealing look.
I am working with The Soda Shop to print and bind the book, which is approximately 5-inches wide by 8-inches tall (give or take a few centimeters). The cover features a letter-pressed title and color photograph (on Duplex Cover stock), and the book's binding will be a distinctive hand-stitching along the spine. The interior of the book will be equally attractive, with a carefully chosen typeface and compelling color photographs.
As a result of this attention to detail and craftsmanship, this is a limited-edition production of 100 books, adding to the value of each.
All funds raised through this Kickstarter will go directly to chapbook production costs.
Visit my website for examples of my work, and check out the Rewards (on the right side of this page) offered for your contributions. Thank you for considering investing in this project, a couple of years in the making. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Risks and challenges
I honestly do not foresee any obstacles at this point in the project's life. The chapbook's content and layout has already been created. Once the project is funded, the files will be sent to the printer. As long as there are no issues with the files provided, and the proof from the printer is good to go, I do not anticipate any major challenges. Any hiccups or delays at this point should be minimal at worst but will be dealt with immediately to keep the project on track.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
