Hello recruits! Welcome to the Far Away (FA) program, sponsored by the Federation Alliance (FA). Thank you for your interest in becoming interstellar explorers. Our program sends two people to unknown planets in a grand, cooperative exercise. You and your partner will brave the forces of nature on exotic worlds as you forage for sustenance, establish Federation outposts, and fend off hostile beasts. For legal purposes, we must tell you the world is not your only enemy; being isolated from humanity wears a dangerous toll on your psyche. But we trust you two are fully capable of braving the universe without suffering anything colloquially called “Space Madness”.
In addition to the earlier training video submitted to Kickstarter, FA has provided the following full-play video to educate explorers on their rewarding, safe careers.
Let’s recap the video’s contents, because redundancy equals legal protection. You can also learn view the full training program in this print-and-play form.
Explorers select a mission to undergo and touchdown planet-side. Your goal is to complete the mission. You will fail the mission if you starve to death, get torn apart by alien lifeforms, or you suffer from Loneliness Overload on Sufficient Systems (LOSS).
Every Routine Operational UNit Designation (ROUND) is as follows: each explorer takes three actions, such as exploring, harvesting resources, constructing infrastructure, and scaring off creatures. Following the explorers’ actions, the alien creatures act. More creatures may spawn in the perimeter at this time, so be vigilant. Finally, explorers accrue hunger and loneliness.
Be aware: communication between explorers is EXTREMELY LIMITED. Due to the overwhelming cost of visual processing equipment in your suit, support for radios was dropped. You will not be able to talk or otherwise communicate to your partner unless you are in the same HEX. Plan ahead of time to avoid dire mistakes.
FA has several active missions needing attention. Each offers a branching narrative to provide optional boons or burdens in future missions. We think it’s akin to leaving your legacy on something, though not as permanent. Providing FA sufficient venture capital gives you the unique position of helping sponsor missions for future explorers.
Each of these missions should take two explorers between one and three hours to complete. We expect you’ll want to undergo missions multiple times, leading to a solid amount of entertainment value in our reckless space exploration program.
We at FA like to describe the worlds you visit as a sandbox. It’s weird how the universe conspires to have similar, yet unique, planets everywhere we send people. The biggest change between worlds is the ecosystem. Your experience will be radically different due to both individual creatures and the interplay between different species. You will be discovering these aliens, so their behavior is largely determined by you. Your adventures will be more like the telling of a story than a mechanical AI-generated script.

Funding FA’s exploration program will benefit you. The following are the government subsidies you’ll get at different levels of support. Know that backing at a higher level still entitles you to everything else.
Every game component in a form you could print and assemble at home.
The full game, approximately 800 pieces, shipped to your door at a special Kickstarter price. Economists speculate the value (and retail price) will increase after launch.
Back at this tier and you’ll also get a Far Away themed shirt, designed by our artist, Jake Breish.
This tier adds our pack of Far Away swag. It contains two glow-in-the-dark explorer pins, a print of an iconic creature, and three postcards from different planet biomes.
Backers at this level will work with our artist and designer to make an in-game creature. We’ll help integrate your idea into the ecosystem making it unique, coherent, and awesome.
The final tier lets you design a mission. You’ll work with our team to setup the structure and challenges of the mission. We’ll help guide you through potential limitations, but rest assured, your mission will contain unique components and be of the same caliber as our base set. Should we get a large number of mission requests, we may release some as a mission pack past the October 2019 delivery date.
**$80** Retail Tier: This tier is for wholesale purchasers or international bulk group purchases. You will need to provide evidence that you are either a retailer of some kind or coordinating a transaction on behalf of a larger, international group.
Here is how the FA bureaucracy will spend your contributions.
$25000: Prove your planets aren’t flat. The player and crash site tokens are replaced with actual figures.
$27500: Add mise en place to your mise en space. A plastic inlay will be added to the box, for easy organization without tiny plastic bags.
400 Backers: 4-Player mode! With enough explorers enlisted, the Federation can justify commissioning a four-crew mission. Merge your copies of Far Away and create a epic planet with special rules and novel communication restrictions.
????: As the Kickstarter progresses, we’ll listen to the community and respond to their wants for more stretch goals. Our priorities are improving the base game, but we’re open to adding more artistic input tiers, more swag, and support in online mediums.
The Federation Alliance is solely owned and controlled by Cherry Picked Games. We are the creators of Catalyst, Drink!, and Conspire. All three were funded on Kickstarter.
Cherry Picked Games is based in Seattle, WA. Aside from designing games, we host regular community gaming events in North Seattle and work with the King County Library System to run tabletop games for teens.
CPG is Alex Jerabek and Jake Breish. Alex is our creative director. He is a technical writer for money and an improv comedian for significantly less money. His favorite games are Pandemic Legacy and Space Cadets. Jake is our art director. He’s worked on non-CPG games, like Villainous, and runs No Luck Club. His favorite games are Overwatch and Codenames.
Risks and challenges
This is our fourth Kickstarter. We’re familiar with the process from design to shipping. This is our first game that’s more complex than cards and a book. We’re working with a manufacturer to get accurate quotes and specs, but there’s always unknowns working across an ocean.
