Hi! I'm Rebecca from ChemKnits, and I'm here to Kickstart the first 25 episodes of my new video series, Dyepot Weekly. I have been creating knitting tutorials and yarn dyeing videos on the ChemKnits Tutorials YouTube channel for the last 7 years. To date, I have published almost 200 videos with a total of over 4 million views. With Dyepot Weekly, I will start publishing new videos on a consistent schedule to bring you more of the dyeing fun you love. I will explore new dyes and techniques, and also revisit old favorites.
I love experimenting with new techniques on camera. My style is to take the viewer through the whole yarn or T-shirt dyeing process, sharing mistakes and surprises I encounter along the way. I frequently film dyeing projects where I am attempting the technique for the first time so I can share my genuine reaction with viewers. I believe that this makes the dyeing techniques accessible. If I can do it, you can, too! Your comments and suggestions have inspired the continued exploration of different ways we can use food coloring to dye yarn. Currently, I have over 50 video ideas that just focus on dyeing yarn with food coloring! I plan to use your feedback to include what you want to see in the videos. This Kickstarter project will give us a fun platform to explore, plan, and launch the first 25 episodes of Dyepot Weekly together.
Most of the current ChemKnits Tutorials dyeing videos focus on using food coloring to dye yarn. Since the ingredients are food grade, I am able to use my cooking pots, pans, and utensils for dyeing yarn. Lately, I’ve been getting more and more questions about commercial dyes designed specifically for dyeing yarn and other fibers. My viewers ask me how food coloring dyes compare to commercial acid dyes, and I cannot answer these questions until I try using the other dyes. In order to branch out, I will need to purchase some new dyes and equipment to safely carry out these dyeing experiments.
At the rate I’ve been filming dyeing videos, I am accumulating more hand-dyed yarn than I could ever knit with. In exchange for backing the Dyepot Weekly Kickstarter project, for the first time ever, you can acquire some original ChemKnits dyed yarn! I look forward to the beautiful colors that will come out of the dyepot.
Your contributions will help me purchase the materials I need for the first 25 episodes of Dyepot Weekly. I will film my exploration of commercial acid dyes, natural dyes, and even more types of food coloring such as powders, sprays and even food markers. Food coloring dyes work great on protein based fibers like wool and silk, but not cotton and acrylic. By viewer request, I want to explore dyes that are designed for these fibers.
I use my kitchen pots and pans to dye yarn with food coloring, but in order to use dyes that aren’t food safe I will need to purchase a separate set of pans and utensils. I also plan to purchase an inexpensive microwave and crock pot to have dedicated heat sources for dyeing fiber.
For many Kickstarer projects, the cost of rewards take up a big part of the budget. The great news about the Dyepot Weekly project is that the cost of creating your rewards are directly part of the cost of creating the Dyepot Weekly videos. Many of the surprise yarn skeins were created in past ChemKnits Tutorials videos. The more rewards I need to create for this Kickstarter equal more fun dyeing videos for all of you.
Other expenses from this project include Kickstarter and transaction fees (~10% of the total raised) and shipping costs. Shipping is expensive, but I have worked hard to price the rewards so they include the cost of shipping within the United States.
The above chart shows how the first $1000 of this Kickstarter project will be allocated. If we go beyond the goal, the additional funds will be used for more undyed yarn, dyes, and shipping additional rewards. I have some really fun stretch goals which will unlock some new rewards and add-ons if we hit different funding targets. The more money we raise will allow for more variety of dyes and fibers within the first 25 episodes of Dyepot Weekly.
In return for backing the Dyepot Weekly video series, I have created some fantastic rewards. All backers will receive access to backer only updates. You will get the chance to contribute to the planning of Dyepot Weekly episodes, sneak peeks and other behind the scenes fun.
There are many reward tiers that include surprise hand-dyed yarn and mini skeins. For the "You Pick" backers, I will create a Facebook album with pictures of the yarn on a designated date after the completion of the project. The album will be up for a day before claiming is allowed to begin. Starting at a designated time, you can comment on a photo to select and claim the yarn you would like. There will be a range of colors, yarn weights, and fibers available. The yarn album will have at least twice as many skeins as there are "pick your own" backers so there are plenty of choices for all “You Pick - Yarn Edition” backers.
Stretch Goal Unlocked! All backers who select a shipped reward will receive a bonus mini-skein of hand dyed yarn in their package! Sponsor level backers (Who selected rewards $50+) will receive a bonus surprise 5 yard hand dyed and handspun mini-skein. Backers who selected rewards $10-35 will receive a 5 g mini-skein (either fingering or worsted weight.)
Since not all of my fans knit or crochet, I wanted to offer a hand dyed reward that anyone could use. Tie dyeing has been a part of my history even longer than knitting, and it has been a joy to start filming some T-shirt dyeing videos in the last year. If you select the "Not a knitter but I want something dyed" reward, you will receive a surprise tie dyed T-shirt. (Bronze-Gold sponsors can also choose a T-shirt instead of yarn.) Available t-shirt sizes include 2T-4T, Child S-XL, and Adult S-XXXL. In the backer survey, I will ask for your least favorite color and whether you prefer a subtle or wild pattern on your shirt.
What is the difference between a shout-out and sponsorship? All backers over $5 will receive a shout out in a Kickstarter Thank You Video on the ChemKnits Tutorials YouTube Channel and a shout out in print on the ChemKnits blog. Sponsors will be acknowledged at the beginning, middle, and end of the Dyepot Weekly video that they sponsor and in print on the ChemKnits blog. Sponsors will also receive one of the items dyed in the video that they sponsored.
Bronze and silver sponsors will select a undyed base for their dyeing video. The base choices include 100 g worsted weight yarn (either 100% wool or cotton), 100 g sock yarn (75% superwash merino, 25% nylon), 100 g 100% Peruvian Highland wool roving, or a T-shirt. Sponsors will receive one of the dyed items featured in the video, although the displayed technique and colors will be a surprise. Silver level sponsors will also receive a surprise 100 g skein of yarn that may have been featured in a past ChemKnits Tutorials video.
Gold sponsors will get to work with me to design the Dyepot Weekly video they sponsor. I want to create the yarn (or other dyed object) that you want to own! I will send you some dyeing technique options, but you are also welcome to suggest the dyeing experiment that you really want to see. You will have an expanded list of options for the yarn or fiber to be dyed. Want me to dye some knitting project bags? Sock blanks? Lace weight silk? Silk hankies for spinning? Alpaca? There are some limits (sorry, I won’t dye 200 g of qiviut!) but I am open to requests. Think of the Gold Sponsorship as a way to get the dyeing video you always wanted to see PLUS custom hand dyed yarn in your favorite colors. Gold sponsors will receive an equivalent of TWO 100 g skeins of yarn dyed in your sponsored video. Gold level sponsors will also receive a surprise 100 g skein of yarn that may have been featured in a past ChemKnits Tutorials video.
The “Spin into Gold” Sponsor will have a unique experience. You will work with me to design some custom hand spun yarn (approximately 200 g worsted weight). You will get multiple options of fiber base I dye and spin into your yarn. We will work together to select the colors and dyeing technique for your roving. You will also get to help me decide how I will spin the yarn. Do you want multiple color repeats or a gradient? Do you want a single ply yarn or 2, 3, 4-plyed? In addition to sponsorship credits on the dyeing video, I will livestream some of the spinning of your yarn. Once the dyed fiber is dry, I will work with you to schedule a time for the livestream so you will be able to catch me live. I cannot wait to create something beautiful with you.
New Reward Unlocked! The Stardust Sponsorship reward is the "Surprise Handspun" reward renamed and with something extra special. Stardust Sponsors will still receive a surprise hand dyed and handspun skein of yarn. These will be 100 g of 100% wool and worsted weight or thicker. Ply number, yardage and color will vary but backers can indicate their least favorite color. All of the dyeing will be featured in a past video, and some of the spinning might be featured, too. Stardust sponsors will bring some magic to the Dyepot Weekly episode list. They will add an EXTRA EPISODE of Dyepot weekly! There are 10 slots for this reward, which could mean up to 45 episodes of Dyepot Weekly total! These episodes will include dyeing projects that I really want to do, and that you want to see, but I have felt some hesitation about doing in a sponsored video since they might not result in yarn that sponsors want to receive.
New Reward Unlocked! Backers who select the Sock Blank Special Reward ($49) will get a CUSTOM hand dyed 100 g sock blank of yarn (2 - 50 g balls). You pick the colors and whether you want a random pattern, a gradient, stripes, or a surprise. I will wind the sock blank into two 50 g balls of yarn, unless you prefer to have me send you the dyed blank so you can watch it transform into some two-at-a-time socks or mittens as you knit or crochet. (Please note that “Stripes” might have some blending between rows, they won’t be clean, distinct stripes.) The dyeing will be featured either in a LIVE Sock Blank Special or in a bonus episode of Dyepot weekly. Backers will also receive shout outs in the Kickstarter Thank You video, and on the ChemKnits website.
Reward Fulfillment Timeline
The first 25 videos of Dyepot Weekly will be released over the course of 6 months, which means that it could take up to 6 months for all backers to receive all of their rewards. Dyepot Weekly episodes will be published with preference to sponsorship level followed by backer number. I will be as transparent about expected release date as possible.
I will ship sponsors their physical rewards as soon as the editing is complete on their sponsored video. Sponsors with later release dates might receive their yarn before the video is published. I will do my best to get the physical rewards to everyone as soon as possible.
Any reward date that has a December delivery estimate will be shipped in time to arrive before Christmas. Please don’t count on any physical rewards as Christmas gifts if the expected delivery date is January or later!
Add $3 to your pledge for me to wind all of your yarn into center pull balls.
Stretch Goal Unlocked! Add $24 to your pledge to add a 100 g skein of dip dyed broken violet yarn to your reward! This add on is available to backers who have selected a reward valued at $10 or up. Backers who select this add on can choose between 100% wool worsted weight yarn or 75% superwash merino/25% nylon fingering weight sock yarn. You can change your pledged amount by clicking on the "Manage Your Pledge" button at the top of the project page.
Stretch Goal Unlocked! Bronze and Silver backers can add $10 to their pledge to upgrade their yarn base to a 2 stranded sock blank! (Gold Sponsors can already select sock blanks as their base.) You will get two identical 50 g balls of sock yarn (75% superwash merino/ 25% nylon) perfect for socks or mittens.
The goal of the Dyepot Weekly Kickstarter project is $1000, however, raising more money means that I can explore more brands of dye and fiber in the Dyepot Weekly videos. I might even be able to expand the series beyond the first 25 videos! I have some excited stretch goals that will become available when specific funding milestones have been reached. More details for each of these stretch goals will be provided as we approach the milestone.
Stretch Goal Unlocked! Since we hit $2500 there will be 35 episodes of Dyepot Weekly! See the "35 Dyepot Weekly Episodes!" update from October 2 to learn more about the Sock Blank Special that will unlock if we hit $3000.
Stretch Goal Unlocked! Since we hit $3000 there will be LIVE Sock Blank Special episodes on the YouTube channel! See the "Sock Blank Special Unlocked!" update for more information.
Risks and challenges
As a one woman show, and the mother of two young boys, production of Dyepot Weekly could be interrupted by health or family emergencies. It will take 6 months to release all 25 videos of Dyepot Weekly. I will film videos in advance to allow me to keep up with the consistent release schedule. I plan to distribute physical rewards to sponsors as soon as video editing is complete. This means that sponsors of later Dyepot Weekly episodes will receive their yarn before their sponsored video is published.
Since I am frequently trying new techniques on camera, the video you sponsor might be a "failure" where the color and pattern results are different from what we anticipated. These "failures" are always beautiful and often inspire future videos where I try to take advantage of the surprise results. If the video you sponsor results in an actual failure where the fiber is felted, burnt or otherwise damaged, I will not send you unusable yarn.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
