Goal: to raise $18,000 to record a new album!
This life as a working musician is such an amazing adventure. I've been traveling and writing and performing all over the place.. and now that the new songs are written, it's time to get them recorded and into your hands!
I decided to throw all of my eggs in one basket, so to speak-- moved out of my apartment and into my tour van. All of my energies- along with the ones spent climbing and doing yoga- are now focused on my music!
I have found that I am the most productive when I'm either on the road or hiking in the woods.. so I've been doing a ton of both of those things and writing as much as possible. It's made for some really fun music-- choruses you can sing along with, words that stick in your head, and upbeat rhythms mixed with some heartfelt ballads.
So how did I come up with $18,000 as a goal? There are a few parts to it.
First off, I intend to hire a producer and an arranger, two things which I haven't done in the past but am SO excited about doing this time around.
For me, producing my own album is a bit like playing drums on it.. it's something I can physically do but someone else is far better suited for the job and I'm more than happy- relieved, even- to share that responsibility with a professional who’s excited to bring their own wisdom and experience and energy into the project.
It’s also my vision to include a small string section on some of the songs – so I want to hire an arranger to write out parts for the instruments in ways that wouldn’t occur to me since I don’t play the cello or the bass (I did play the upright in the 6th grade simply because I was the tallest one in my class but I’ve long since forgotten that skill.)
So here is the cost breakdown: $13k for recording, mixing, and mastering. $2k for pressing, design, and album art. $2k for promotion and distribution. $1k for production of other merchandise (tshirts, stickers, etc) and shipping costs.
As with all Kickstarter projects, this platform is all or nothing! Not every venture turns out to be a success. Case in point: last year's Cardboard Boat Regatta in Manchester, MA:
If we don't reach our funding goal, no cards will be charged, and the record will be put on hold until we think of another way to fund it. So let's make it happen!
Thank you for taking the time to read this!! Please share and let's make a record!
Risks and challenges
There are so many bumps in the road. But they make for good stories- and great lyrics. One of the songs that is going on this album has resonated with a lot of live audiences so far- I've had a ton of people come up after shows and thank me for sharing the story and the message in my song "....just because I'm wandering doesn't mean I'm lost...."
It brings comfort to people to know that the journey is more important than the destination.
That said, I will try my darnedest to get this album recorded and into your hands by the fall of 2017- and if and when we hit a bump in the road, I promise that I'll keep you informed. And the project will surely be better for it.. obstacles have a way of encouraging us to rise up and be the best version of ourselves. I want my music to be the very best it can be!
