Do you have the courage? :)

*************************************************************

    Hey!  Thanks for checking out my Kickstarter for Fables of Talumos.  My name is Dan Beckerton, and this has been my little passion project for the last year and a half.  I've been working on it in my spare time while teaching English in Korea (which has been a life-changing event and I encourage anyone to try it).  In my free time at school I'd jot down ideas or sketches and then add them to the game when I got home in the evening. It's been a huge learning process (both living in Korea as well as game development), but I've come out wiser (and a little rounder).

 Fables of Talumos is, in-fact, my first project.  Wait, wait!  Don't run away just yet.  Like many of you reading this, I love video games; their music, art, stories, and all-around-fun!  The thought of making one myself had occurred to me before, however, those thoughts were always accompanied by an expectation of a university degree, and since I already had one of those, it didn't seem likely.  However, thanks to absolutely amazing online content creators (such as HeartBeast, Shaun Spalding, Friendly Cosmonaut, Gaming Reverends, and many, many more), wonderfully supportive communities (like the GameMaker, Twitter, and reddit communities) and also my family and friends, I gained the confidence and competence to create!

Why Kickstarter?=======================================

    Being a game developer, especially a new one, is quite challenging in present day.  With around 21 games being released each day on Steam (in 2017) it's hard to make a splash and get people to notice you, even if they are the type who might really like your game!  I've created this Kickstarter to help me afford to work full-time on Fables of Talumos, but also to create a community around the game.  I think it would be so cool to have people emotionally invested in something I've created, eager to learn more about the world, or look forward to experiencing more of the game.  I hope you, too, will join this community and enjoy Fables of Talumos and all other future titles.

====================================================

Zelda: All of them!  But I have a soft spot for Ocarina of Time and Link's Awakening.  The adventure these games provide stays with you, even decades later.  It feels like every character and place is so memorable, and I also  wanted to create a world that sticks with people for years.  Fables of Talumos was originally planned to have a very similar style to Link's Awakening, but evolved to encompass more influences and flavours.

Dark Souls: I feel like a hipster when I say that I've enjoyed the series since the release of Demon's Souls... but it's true! (*adjusts hipster glasses*)  But seriously, the combat feels so weighty and meaningful in these games, and I wanted to capture that feeling.  I also adore the environmental storytelling that the Souls series uses, and how much substance there is to the games' lore.

Warcraft 3: This one might have come from left field, but I love the Warcraft RTS games, especially Warcraft 3.  I distinctly remember going to my friend's house as a kid and listening to that lovely dial-up sound as he connected to Battle.net and played Warcraft 2 against some random person online.  I used to spend hours messing around in the Warcraft 3 Map Editor, which really should have clued me in that this could be a good career choice but...well, better late than never.  Warcraft is another franchise with fascinating lore, and I loved the world(s) they created, though I kept my distance from WoW in order to retain control over my life.  One day I hope to make an RTS of my own, taking place in the world of Talumos.

 Fables of Talumos is an adventure game with a variety of flavours.  The game takes place in Talumos, the Moonlight Realm, and contains characters from 4 distinct races.

The Hetonians are your ordinary human race.  They live together in villages and kingdoms, and are scientifically driven.  Hetonians are a greedy people, and are never satisfied with what they've got.  Hence, wars between countries/kingdoms are common.

The Skogen are a forest-loving race of humanoids that resemble deer.  They follow the rules of their tribes, and can be found in places of nature all around Talumos.  The Skogen care little for the other races, and seek only to preserve nature and their homes.

The Forlorn are a cursed race of humanoids that have dragon-like traits.  This appearance was the result of evil sorcery placed on their ancestors by an angry monarch.  As dragons are the evilest of creatures in Talumos, their cursed appearance has led them to living in isolated mountain homes.  The Forlorn envy the freedom of the Hetonians, however they have grown strong on their own and are led by only the most powerful of the tribe.

The Fallen are another cursed race.  Long ago, before the Great War, there was one elder race of beings.  A murderous deceit by one of the elder kingdoms resulted in the death of their rival's king.  The king was brought back using a fire from another realm, and he used this flame to immortalize his remaining people.  Now they are the Fallen, undying and undead, seeking their revenge on the living races of Talumos.

Fables of Talumos is an action-adventure game.  To better understand the story, world and gameplay, I encourage you to try out the demo at:

https://cheesemaster-games.itch.io/fables-of-talumos

and

https://gamejolt.com/games/FablesofTalumos/311918

But in short: The story is about a man named Oskar who regularly has very troubling dreams where he must save his wife Aeva from some sort of disaster.  The game takes place just after one such dream, but to say any more would be giving too much away, so I encourage you again to check out the demo!  Talumos is a world that I've spent many hours dreaming up.  I hope to stage a number of games or experiences in Talumos, so I will continue to develop the world to make it a believable place with its own history, kingdoms, peoples, relationships, and more.

 It's a game with a story, but the emphasis is placed on creating a believable world, engaging and challenging gameplay, and discovering important items, weapons and armour sets.  You won't find any boring filler collectibles in Fables of Talumos.  Each item, weapon and relic is placed with purpose and care, in hopes of telling a greater tale through environmental storytelling.

The inventory system in the game will have 3 pages full of spaces for the player to place each important item.  The third page is a kind of journal where the player will record any of the relics they have discovered during their travels.

 As of this moment, there are 6 bosses and a variety of enemies already created in Fables of Talumos, though you'll only see a few in the demo.  More bosses and enemies will be added as the final areas of the game are finished, however even more could appear depending on the response from the community.  These are all designed to feel different from one another, and I hope they will provide solid challenges to players as they encounter each beast.  Additionally, each weapon will be designed to feel different from the others, and will have various strengths and weaknesses.

As indicated in the Backer Tiers on the right-hand side, the Silver Knight Tier backers and above will receive a digital art and lore book.  Work on the art and lore book has only just begun (I'd like to see if anyone is even interested in such a thing), but I have a few drawings/paintings from the very talented Korean artist Junghee Kim.  She has been studying art since attending an art-specific middle school and I think her art can speak for itself as to her abilities.

***Update (April 3, 2019): *************************************

She's done it again!  Thanks very much to Junghee Kim for the amazing new cover art for the game!

====================================================

Check out Junghee Kim's art at her Instagram:

====================================================

The two pieces from the art and lore book that Junghee has sketched out are,

A quick sketch of the protagonist of Fables of Talumos, Oskar:

and a painting of one of the NPCs (non-player characters) you will run into numerous times throughout the game, Dragus:

And if there is interest in it, I could include some concept sketches of my own, when dreaming up characters, enemies, and places in the game (though they look like preschool scribbles compared to Junghee's art).  Nonetheless, they could (and probably at least a few will) be included in the art and lore book.

(It's really cool to see something you've drawn come to life in-game)

*************************************************************

The Wallpaper bundle for Hedge Knight Tier backers and above will include wallpapers done by Junghee Kim, myself, and a few pixel art ones as well.

Both the art & lore book and the wallpapers will include colour pictures as well (it's not all black and white).

Before you go...

Working on this game has been a huge learning process, and it's really given me some drive and direction in my professional life.  I've gone from knowing nothing about game development, to making a trailer, Kickstarter, and demo, all in just under 2 years.  This game started as a hobby that slowly started devouring all of my free time, including my precious gaming time.  One thing to note is that I've been working on this game on my own.  The music, sounds, concepts, art (aside from the art book), programming, advertising (or lack thereof) has all been done by myself.  I wanted to make my first game on my own, so I could get a feel for the different aspects of game development, but also so I could appreciate the amount of work and time that goes into each area.  It's been very fun to make, and I hope you can all gain the same enjoyment from playing it.  Thanks again for checking out my Kickstarter!

-Dan

Risks and challenges

As of right now, the game is approximately 50-60% completed (depending on if certain stretch goals are reached). My goal is to release the game by September of this year, however I'm still very new to the ins-and-outs of releasing a game, so that date could be adjusted slightly. Regardless, Fables of Talumos is my #1 priority, my hobby, and my own little baby. I will do everything I can to make it a fun and memorable game for myself and anyone playing it.
