Cheer Up! is an adult party card game scientifically* designed to make your friends laugh. It features jokes™, cardboard™, and when you open the box a wizard pops out and grants you ten wishes**.
*No science at all was used in the making of this game.
**Nope, that will definitely not happen.
PLAYERS: Works best with 3-8 but supports more
PLAYTIME: 30+ Mins, but learn in 5
In fact, you can learn right now! It works like this:
The Leader (or dealer) picks up a Question card...
And reads the letters at the top aloud. Everyone else grabs two of each Answer card (Descriptions, Things, and Actions) that match the requirements at the top (D + T + A).
The Leader reads the question and everyone must use the cards in their hands to form a phrase in the correct order. Keep the cards you want in your hand, and discard all the rest. Then, the Leader asks the question to each player, who must then read their creation. Cue laughter.
But wait! There's one more twist! Before everyone reads their answers, the Leader picks up a Rule card, which will feature some wacky rule that everyone must follow for that round. This could range from talking in accents, to swapping cards with other players, to changing the question, or to making someone do charades. Trust us, you don't want to get charades.
For an even more in-depth walk-through, check out this video, which breaks down an entire round card by card:
"This was great, I loved it, I thought it was so fun!"
"This game was very creative and I'm drunk and I like it" - Beer and Board Games
"A really silly game...definitely one to bring out at your parties." - Let's Level Up
"I'm not saying this word." - Chris's Aunt
"Wait a minute, I've played party games before," you say, in our imagination, "What's so great about this one?" Glad you asked!
There are 3 main things that set Cheer Up! apart from other party card games, and we've conveniently laid them out here like a good boy:
All the cards in Cheer Up! are written for you, but in this game you get to take credit for your jokes. The cards give you helpful puzzle pieces but your job is to put all the pieces together. When paired with the right card, a silly word can skyrocket to extreme ridiculousness, and you get to own it, baby.
There are also a handful of cards that require a little bit of advanced strategy, such as the D card "Every." It won't always make sense on it's own, but when paired with a T it can work wonders.
After multiple sessions of Cheer Up! you will likely run across the same cards, just like in any other game. However, due to the number of possible combinations, we can guarantee that no two games will ever be the same. In fact, you may never play the same combos again. Even though answer cards are recycled, it's the combination of the answers, plus the question, plus the rule that changes the context completely. If the maximum of 5 cards are used in a round, you're looking at a 1 in like...40 kablillion chance of having the exact situation come up again. We didn't do the math, but it's big.
For example, in Round 1, you might get the question "What's the worst that could happen?" Maybe you chose this as you answer:
Ten rounds and 13 beers later you have:
As you can see, the same card was used a totally different way. And that's not including the fact that in the second round, you had to say it as British Royalty.
The goal of this game is to provide something fun for adults while also making sure it has universal appeal. With that being said, Cheer Up! has very few pop culture references, slang terms, inside jokes, or proper nouns, and when they are included they are as broad as possible. We want to make sure everyone has the best chance of laughing at all times. There should never be a time when you don't "get it."
Additionally, many of the cards in this game are naughty, but most are not purposefully over-the-top shocking. Don't get us wrong, this game is dirtier than a politician covered in malarkey and is absolutely for adults only, but we like to think of it as more "silly-nasty" than "you're going to Hell." The idea isn't to make fun of certain types of people, it's to laugh along with someone trying to say "A Slippery Giraffe Making a Sex Tape" in a Pirate accent, and we find that makes for a more inclusive experience that keeps everyone wanting more.
This game will be a Kickstarter-exclusive version which will NEVER be produced exactly the same way again. Any future versions, if we make them, will not have the same content. It's also the cheapest it will ever be, so you know, save a buck.
By jumping on now, YOU have the power to shape the game. All backers will get to vote on some of the cards to be included, and the results will be binding and permanent via blood oath (or an oath of equal perpetuity). You can also pledge for the ability to suggest a card directly with your name on it, or you can suggest ideas freely via the comments.
If this game isn't funded, it will never get made and every abandoned puppy in the world will cry.
It'll look really nice. Sure, you can download a black and white version of Cheer Up! for free right here. However, the full manufactured game will be on beautiful, durable cardstock in full color and will be housed in a custom box made of gold*. Trust us, it'll look good.
There is no risk to you. Not only do we believe in this game so much that we are putting it out there FOR FREE (did we mention it was free? Zero dollars, people.) but we are also offering a MONEY-BACK GUARAN-FREAKIN'-TEE. If you do not like this game, you're probably a sad person, but we will be happy to refund your money and you can keep the damn thing to use as firewood or something.**
*Not actually made of gold, obviously. That's called hyperbole.
**Not responsible for ink inhalation or nose cancer or house burning down or whatever happens if you actually burn it.
Note: All pledge levels $100 and above have been upgraded to automatically receive TWO copies of Cheer Up!, however this will not be reflected in the side bar.
Shipping for all rewards:
UK & EU: $15
Rest of World: $20
Backers outside the U.S. should not have to pay any VAT, and will ship from within your home area if it makes financial sense to do so.
All Premium Rewards (signed prototype sheet and personalized box) will ship seperately for free.
As we get closer and closer to funding, we will unlock mini-goals that don't affect the base game, but will provide some entertainment during the project.
Stretch Goals will unlock when we go past the base funding level, which will include:
Blank Cards to write your own answers!
New Pledge Levels!
This game is already prototype'd and play-tested, and has been in the works for over a year. At this point we're confident that the basic game rules are complete, but during this campaign we will happily take feedback and suggestions. We have also aligned with some great partners who we are confident in (AdMagic and ShipNaked).*
*We were not confident in Cousin Eddie's ability to "Twitterfy this thing, bro, let's take it to the moon!" so he, unfortunately, has been dropped as a partner.
As you can see in the images, a bunch of the design is done (however, note that these are only prototypes).
The rest of the time will be spent finalizing the design and the contents, and manufacturing everything. Obviously, it's possible this could result in unforeseen things (slight delays, misprints, Global Economic Collapse, etc.). However, our goal is to try and stick to this timeline as bestest as we can.
Where Is The Money Going?
The majority of the money will be going to the manufacturing and shipping of this game, with some fees to contractors (graphic designer, etc). More money equals more copies. Any extra KS product will be sold exclusively online or in person and at a slightly higher price than here to keep it fair.
Chris Rio is mostly a comedy writer from Boston. He came up with this idea in a dream (seriously) over a year ago to try and help a friend get through a tough time, and now it actually looks like a real thing. He doesn't know why he is talking in third person.
Niko is his off-the-books personal assistant (he gets paid in Busy Bones). Niko was the "November" in a dog calendar modeling contest one time, and he thinks all this was his idea.
We make a great team.
Risks and challenges
Like any first-time project, there is a chance that something along the way could be delayed or go wrong. However, we believe we have a clear plan in place and are working with experienced partners which will minimize the risk. We have limited the amount of physical add-ons and provided a very loose timeline to try and mitigate these risks.
There's also a chance that support will be so overwhelming that it becomes a larger project than we expected, which is a blessing and a curse. In which case, we may have to get a second dog to help with everything.
