FUNDED: Thank you, backers! (See the FAQ if you missed our campaign.)

Were you one of those kids who loved knocking things down? Perhaps you'd enjoy a safe place to indulge a touch of pyromania? Flaming Pyramids could be the perfect game for you!

Flaming Pyramids sounds deceptively simple. Each turn all you must do is select one tile from your hand of five and place it in a legal spot according to the Building Regulations. However, overweight tiles, flammable materials, and unavoidable mismatches can cause mayhem, crumbling bits of the pyramid away and adding those tiles to your supply.

Build with straw, wood, stone... and blowtorches? The colorblind-friendly tiles feature native NZ flora and fauna.
Build with straw, wood, stone... and blowtorches? The colorblind-friendly tiles feature native NZ flora and fauna.

The bigger the pyramid gets, the more extensive the damage can be, so sometimes it is best to cause a small bit of mayhem early to get rid of an inconvenient tile before it can cause big trouble for you down the line.

We have posted the rulebook to BoardGameGeek. If you prefer videos, this one explains tile placement rules and collapses, allowing viewers to play a basic, introductory game:

Our second video teaches you how to add in the elements of a regular game, enabling the fires and explosions that can make Flaming Pyramids especially and hilariously volatile:

We invite you to try before you buy. Visit here to download directions and a print-and-play with placeholder artwork.

Flaming Pyramids is a hugely versatile game:

  • New players and families with very young children can start with the basic game.
  • Casual groups and families can check for mayhem together. Flaming Pyramids can get quite random and silly with 5-6 players.
  • A quick round of Flaming Pyramids makes an easy filler or starter for an adult/more serious board-gaming group.
  • If you prefer no holds barred competition, play in competitive mode with 2-4 players and throw in the Curse variant. Play in rounds, with each player getting to be the starting player once and record your scores similar to how you would for Hearts, with the winner being the player with the lowest overall score.

"Plays very smoothly, easy to teach...accessible to a wide audience." Hot-off-the-press video review by Geek City USA. His how-to-play is thorough and completely accurate. The review section starts at 8:25.

Jarrod Carmichael of Three Minute Board Games takes Flaming Pyramids for a spin:

Written preview by Jonathan Nelson of Gaming Bits: "This is a game that I’d recommend trying out. I think it will appeal to a lot of different players."

Wolf of the Kwarenteen notes Flaming Pyramids' similarity to UNO, which he dislikes, but says our game is "super cool because you add that spatial element":

Expand Your Game blog previews Flaming Pyramids: "The game is a great filler that you can replay over and over again. Fans of easy to teach games such as uno, exploding kittens, or love letter will feel right at home with the wonderous Flaming Pyramids."

Flaming Heck, It's Flaming Pyramids! Review by BoardandBeanGames: "it's a simple concept well executed, yet can be as complicated and cut-throat as you want it to be."

Flaming Pyramids already has basic, family, and competitive modes built into the existing components. Since our plan was to fulfil from New Zealand, we didn't want to add anything to make the game substantially heavier, but with backers' support, we did achieve some aesthetic and other improvements:

Also, since we attracted over 10 backers from Germany, Norbert will be translating the directions into German, which we'll make available as a PDF file.

A lifetime in the making, game designer Norbert Abel first conceived of the game that would become Flaming Pyramids when he was a boy growing up in Germany. ... In more recent years, and now living in New Zealand, Norbert has been playing the game with his wife (who created the illustrations you can see on the prototype tiles in the videos) and their two children.

Flaming Pyramids' continuing positive reception beyond the circles of Norbert's own friends and family led him to Cheeky Parrot Games. Now you can help us add it to our (and your) line-up of quick, light, and affordable family-friendly-but-no-child-required games.

Kickstarter is a useful tool to build anticipation around a new release. Cheeky Parrot Games is a small publisher, so it's helpful to presell part of a print run so less of our capital is tied up in stock. For our backers, pledging for Flaming Pyramids allows you to add a fun, flexible game to your collection before anyone else. After the campaign the game will only be available in the retail market in New Zealand for the foreseeable future, so we encourage potential overseas backers to pledge and secure your copy now. Finally, you can share in the excitement of helping a first-time designer see his creation turned into an appealing marketable product.

Risks and challenges

Cheeky Parrot Games has been in business for four years and has four titles of its own in circulation, plus it distributes a few titles for other small indy publishers. Flaming Pyramids will be our only new project this year and any copies not sold via Kickstarter will be distributed via our existing retailer network in New Zealand.

We've already invested in the artwork and getting samples from the manufacturer so are ready to start production as soon as our Kickstarter campaign closes. We're using a manufacturer (Longpack) and logistics company (Blondi) that we've done business with before.

The Kickstarter proceeds will help us cover manufacture, shipping the print run to New Zealand, and fulfilling pledges.

We expect this project to go smoothly but if we encounter any unexpected delays or other hitches, we will keep our backers informed and do our best to sort everything out quickly.
