It is said that every city has a soul. Some are colorful, some are dark. One of them stands out in splendor, grandeur and wealth. But its glory comes at a cost. Where there is wealth, there is crime. It is the year 1926 when the citizens of the most remarkable metropolitan area start calling their own home Crimopolis: the city that breeds the most notorious gangsters.
You are an averagely successful criminal in a petty town. You are tired of doing small jobs that only earn stress and scars. You have no hope for a better future. After hearing success stories from gangsters in big cities, you move to Crimopolis and pursue becoming the most prestigious gangster of all time.
- Duty- and tax-free delivery to several countries including USA, New Zealand and Japan.
- Up to 60% cheaper worldwide shipping available from our own warehouse.
- Free pickup from multiple locations. See shipping section for details.
Crimopolis is a fast-paced strategy board game about bean-shooters, chippies and dough in a city where nothing counts but underground influence. You recruit criminals, move through the city and explore new areas, execute illicit jobs, ambush others and take over their possessions. Reporters get in the way, but growing skills and abilities balance it.
Crimopolis is a mixture of a Eurogame featuring strategy with multiple winning paths and downplaying luck, and an Amerigame allowing for an immersive 1920s gangster theme with direct player conflict and highly intuitive rules. The game length can be freely adjusted: shorter games increase luck, longer games deepen game plays. The recommended game length balances both and allows for family game nights with players of different ages.
Casual players learn the rules quickly. Hardcore players enjoy the depth of strategy that opens up after a few rounds of the game. There are four winning paths which can be freely chosen, mixed and changed throughout the game, requiring you to adjust your plans if other players have changed their strategies.
- Tile placement with 58 tiles to create variously sized and shaped cities in every game.
- Worker placement allowing to explore, expand and exterminate as known from 4X games yet without player elimination.
- Multiple paths to winning which can be combined, adjusted and changed while playing.
- Unique take on minimal player downtime: double turn occupation keeps you busy by taking over a timekeeper role while someone else is playing, as well as act and counteract opportunities outside your turns.
- Simple rules: all actions are explained on just one double page in the rule book.
- Tense and explosive moments caused by game mechanics which allow you to prepare strategic moves with large impact and defense mechanisms against others doing the same.
- Stunning 3D table presence, custom-shaped wooden gangsters and tombstones, over 300 components, 90 flavor stories and over 100 lovingly drawn illustrations.
Crimopolis is played in turns during which you can typically spend 7 hours of time on actions. A timekeeper uses a clock that shows you how much time you have left. Choose your actions in any order you wish.
The game's end is triggered when someone reaches a prestige of 21. Players continue for a last turn. After that, already earned prestige, body counts, hidden prestige and city influence are added up to determine who is the most prestigious gangster.
The rule book is in a near final stage. Download the current version: Crimopolis Rule Book (PDF, 13.2 MB)!
Illustrations shown here are in a draft stage and yet to be finalized.
To create a truly immersive game, we created an excess of game components, far more than a typical game requires. Discover more components every time you play. To spice things up, we chose different artwork for different situations, resulting in over 100 illustrations.
Details to Fall in Love With
We love art, so rather than drawing illustrations just fit for purpose, we created pieces of art in high quality and with attention to detail.
Here’s an example of how much love goes into our illustrations. City tiles measure 6 x 6 cm (2.4 x 2.4 in). This post office building is 2.7 cm (1.1 in) high. The woman has a height of only 7 mm (0.3 in) and the detailed envelope in her hand fits into a tiny 1 x 1 mm box.
Beside high resolution details, we have also added story-telling artifacts to many of the illustrations. We enjoy seeing players plunge into the game and search for these treasures. Here are a couple of examples revealed:
Flavor for Deep Immersion
All job and newsflash cards come with flavor text written in 1920s gangster style, a total of 90 stories. Long forgotten terms and phrases come back to life. The rule book has a dictionary of about 50 translations such as "daylighting" (shooting or stabbing) and "having the bees" (being rich).
Illustration Time Lapse
We have already spent over 400 hours on artwork and counting. Here's an example of the PARK location. The time lapse condenses hours of our illustrator's work into 99 seconds:
Gangster Pawns and Tombstones
To support people with color blindness while retaining bright colors in the game, we used icons as a mean of differentiation. As a result, the gangsters have different shapes, including two female silhouettes.
For good handling, all wooden components are larger than common pawns. For a good grip when moving multiple gangsters around, all pawns are supersized: gangsters will be at least 25 mm tall, tombstones at least 20 mm.
Crimopolis is made from premium materials and comes with over 300 quality components that make this game deserve a DELUXE badge.
The game you get will be professionally manufactured by a renowned board game factory in China. After being in contact with factories since October 2018, we have shortlisted two of them:
- LongPack Games has dealt with over 500 companies. They manufactured games like Everdell and Raiders of the North Sea.
- Ningbo Eastar is in the industry for 35 years. They manufactured games like Potion Explosion and Lord of Hellas.
Both factories use large-scale offset printers and machines. We will decide on the manufacturer shortly after the end of this campaign.

- ... you want Crimopolis in your hands before Christmas. Online and retail sales will start around February 2020 and only in New Zealand; maybe in a few other countries.

Correct, No Stretch Goals
The one thing we want is Crimopolis to be a stunner on every game shelf, including our own. Leaving game experience and quality up to the chance of how much money we can raise is wrong. Who wants flimsy cards and cheap looking meeples?
Crimopolis is a complete game, also in terms of component quality. We chose the best suitable material such as heavy premium card stock, thick cardboard for tiles and punch-boards, linen texture finish, custom-shaped wooden gangster pawns and tombstones, a stunning and practical 3D counter board including a distinctive church over 12 cm (4.7 in) tall, gangsters in different shapes per player, support for colorblind people and all the material for a fifth player. On top of that, we added several game variations and blank components for experienced players who desire extra spice.
We fulfill pledges before Christmas 2019. This includes 6 weeks of contingency for unforeseen events and our wish to have some extra time here and there.
For those who can wait in favor to save money, we have a second delivery plan including free pickups and flat fee shipping in early 2020. See shipping section for details.
Choose between Fast Air Shipment with a delivery before Christmas 2019 (default) and Free Pickup or Flat Fee Delivery with fulfillment in not later than February 2020.

The idea of Crimopolis was born in early 2013. Sven wanted to play an ultimate game that consists of game mechanics he loves while avoiding mechanics that introduce too much of repetition and chance. There was no such game, so designing one was the only logical step forward.
Over the years, the game rules were refined, but never played. In January 2018, Jan joined and together we built the first prototype. We were blown away by the fun it created. We met weekly and worked on improvements. Sarah joined and her feedback contributed towards a smoother game play. In April 2018, we hired a freelance illustrator to build a sexy looking game copy which we could use for blind play testing. Half a year later we presented Crimopolis to strangers at our outing in Christchurch and BGBTB in Auckland. That grew our fan base and some took our game away for others to play.
Our illustrator Sam started in November 2018. He created a perfect blend of colorful 1920s art deco and a dark edgy style for the over 100 illustrations which the game requires.
Magic happened when Penny Arcade selected us as part of the PAX South Indie Showcase in Texas last January. Among six others, they claimed Crimopolis to be “[one] of the most innovative and fun independent tabletop titles of the year.” We had people constantly playing Crimopolis and many wanted to buy a copy straight away; see photo gallery . Our fan base grew rapidly. We got compelling purchase offers for our prototypes even from people who just watched others play and we were interviewed several times. We felt welcome in the game publishing industry.
We got lots of feedback, adjusted rules and balanced the game play further. More events followed with more people asking to be notified when we release our game. We feel blessed to see that much interest. So here we are with this Kickstarter campaign which is the final step to walk before the manufacturing machines start running.
We are grateful for everyone who has supported us on our journey. This includes all our families and friends, Board Games By The Bay, Franklin Board Gamers, Kiefer Shipman, Penny Arcade, Rachael Williams and Rebecca Gibbs. Special thanks to Rocky Heckman for his unexpected help in the making of our teaser video.
Risks and challenges
Reading this must mean you seriously consider supporting us. Thank you! If there is anything that you want clarified, please check the FAQ or get in touch with us!
This is our debut board game publication. There is no sugarcoating it. Having said that, Sven has worked in the IT industry for over 20 years and one of his skills is to get multi-million-dollar projects over the line on time and within budget. Jan owns a retail business for many years and is fanatical about delivering quality to customer satisfaction. We are both ascribed to be typical Germans with our pedantic accuracy - an attribute that will help us finish this project successfully.
Keeping things simple is the one magic ingredient to minimize risks. This is the reason why we publish in English only, have no stretch goals, no promo packs, no add-ons, no fancy pledge manager, no ocean shipping and only one pledge for the game; the IMMORTAL and GODFATHER pledges add a near zero risk. Crimopolis is thoroughly tested by two dozen play testers as well as hundreds of people and several gaming groups at organized game nights and gaming conventions. Crimopolis is ready for manufacturing.
We have already secured 3/4 of the required budget to manufacture Crimopolis. This Kickstarter campaign aims to raise the missing funds.
We have been discussing our project with factories since October 2018, and selected 2 into our final shortlist. Both are ready for the digital files to be handed over. Only one will manufacture Crimopolis. We have a contract signed with an NZ freight forwarder and 2 experienced fulfillment partners are pre-selected. We have gone through a certification process with one of them.
We are guided by experts in the industry, so we expect most things to run smoothly. However, we have 6 weeks of contingency in our plan for unforeseen events and cases when we want to slow down in favor of good quality rather than rushing.
Crimopolis is dear to our hearts ❤️ and we love to share that feeling. We are grateful for the support we get from our families, friends, game designers, local and overseas businesses and the many, many players who put us to the acid test. It is now time to be grateful for your support which helps us go the last mile and bring our Crimopolis to your gaming table. PLEASE PLEDGE!
Expect us to treat you like friends, each and everyone of you.
Sven, Sarah, Jan and Sam
