Schedule Update

Greetings, Takkers!

We just received an updated production schedule from our wooden piece manufacturer, and it’s not as tight as we had hoped. Their problem is volume: they simply weren’t prepared for an order this size.

So, like many other hugely successful Kickstarter campaigns, Tak is going to ship a little late, possibly by a month or two (and that means pushing into early 2017). We are so sorry for this delay!

We wanted to let you know about this as soon as we could, especially since our order deadline of August 5 is rapidly approaching. This is the last chance to upgrade if you want to upgrade to Devi’s Box or Devi's Board, which are being produced in limited quantity. (And those two items are still on schedule!)

Shipping this project will be more complicated than we hoped, and a bit more costly for us, but we now expect to ship backers in waves, based on which items are in each pledge. Here are some details about the various pieces and their schedules:

Classic Sets: We have ordered a huge number of these, and because of this volume, they will be delivered to us in stages. Our small wooden piece maker simply doesn’t have the storage or the equipment to handle all of the pieces at once! Wood must be bought, dried, stored, milled, and finished. This is already underway.

They have told us that the first half of the Classic Set pieces will be finished by the first week of November. After that, the games must be assembled (at the board game plant) and shipped twice more (once to our warehouse, and then to you), so according to this, our earliest date to begin shipping these rewards will be mid-December.

“Mid-December” is not bad; it’s only a couple of weeks past our original goal of “November.” But again, this is only the first half. Depending on your backer number, and what else is in your pledge, you may not get your rewards until early 2017. We know this is missing Christmas and we’re truly sorry.

Wyrmwood Boards and Boxes: Meanwhile, our partners at Wyrmwood are reporting no delays, so they’re still on track to ship their part of this campaign in November. We had always planned to ship Devi’s Box and Devi’s Board directly from Wyrmwood, so regardless of what else is in your pledge, those two items should ship on time! (See photos of work in progress below.)

Arcanist's Boards: Welling Cabinetry are also on time, so the Arcanist’s Boards are not delayed. However, we do still plan to ship the Arcanist’s boards together with other rewards, so your package may be delayed by other items in your box. (We simply did not collect enough in shipping charges to break these into multiple shipments).

Tavern Sets, Cloth Boards, Pairs Decks, etc: These items are mostly on schedule. Ironically, the one thing we needed fastest (Classic Sets) is the one thing that will take the longest to make, so by the time the Classic Sets are built, we will also have all the other components. If you are receiving only a Tavern Set, for example, we might still be able to ship your rewards in November.

Again, we apologize for the shipping delay and this is certainly not an ideal situation for anyone, but Tak is a complicated project with a lot of pieces. Our manufacturer never gave us a clue that high volume was a problem, so we had based our original estimates on other jobs they had done for us in a shorter timeframe. We padded it a bit, but clearly not enough.

Thanks for your patience as we work as hard as we can to bring this game to the world.

In Other News:

The Gen Con “Year Zero” Tak Tournament: The newly formed US Tak Association will host a 30-player tournament at Gen Con next week, sponsored by Wyrmwood and Digital Game Technology! We’ll be there with prizes and makeshift Tak sets, rehearsing for next summer when we actually have games to sell.

James and Patrick at Gen Con: The instigators of this mighty enterprise will be on display to hoot and grunt about Tak, game design, and anything else that pops into their heads, at noon Friday at the Westin hotel in Indianapolis.

James and Patrick at PAX: The guys will also have a "Talk about Tak" (and everything else) panel at PAX West in Seattle. This talk will be Sunday at noon, details TBD. In addition, James will be teaching at PAX Dev, with a talk specifically about crafting abstract games like Tak, on Wednesday at 2:30. Fear not if you're not heading to PAX Dev: James will post the notes shortly thereafter.

Cheapass Games has a new look! We’ve rebuilt the pages at in a cleaner, better format. This means some of your favorite pages might be hiding (for now) but the product pages are all shiny and new. Please check it out and help us make it even better.

Thanks again for your support and patience. We're all eager to get this game to you, and we will keep you posted as the schedule becomes reality.

@Nicholas Everything is moving along nicely. James has been hard at work on both the box cover and the book, and we received the first production sample of pieces the other day. We also received the cloth boards, though we're thinking of changing the color. More details TBA. :)

Any new updates since? Is this still on (the new) schedule? I'm looking forward to a nice new-year's present :)

    4. Mike Cavanaugh on August 18, 2016

Thank you for the update, James & Patrick. It's reassuring to know that you want to keep us apprised of the situation even when things that are beyond your control delay your original estimates. What you're doing is no small undertaking, so I hope all of the backers will be reasonable and considerate during this process. Thanks also for keeping the quality of the manufacturing process as a main priority. I, for one, appreciate getting a quality product later than anticipated rather than rushing/botching the job just to meet deadlines. Thanks for your hard work. I am excited to see the final product - whenever that may be.

@Phillip Was your friend lucky enough to place in the Tak tournament (allowing us to provide a smooth organized play experience next year), or perhaps they won the charity auction, benefiting The Pourhouse (an organization assisting individuals experiencing homelessness)? Those are the only copies we made available, all which were made by Wyrmwood. If Tak is being made available elsewhere, we'd certainly like to know so we can address that. :) –Cassidy

I have to admit, I'd a bit irked that my friend went to GenCon this year and got a copy of this game, and I'm sitting here still waiting on mine........

Not sure I'm reading this right but the update suggests the plan is to ship the first half of Classic Set included orders in the order of backer #? That's pretty cool. I've always wondered if backing order comes into play on shipping.

    11. Cheapass Games 11-time creator on July 29, 2016

@Alex At this point, the Classic set is the only delayed item. :)

@Jocelyn We briefly considered that, but the logistical complications involving split shipments would slow the process even more. We appreciate your enthusiasm, though!

@Everyone It's never fun delivering bad news to your backers, and we truly appreciate your understanding and patience.

Thanks for keeping us updated. I think being a bit overwhelmed is forgivable when you bring in $1.3 million versus a target of only a few thousand! I always expect some slippage with any Kickstarter project's estimated shipping timeline and indeed some of my most favourite rewards have been ones that shipped WAY late. It'll be totally worth the wait.

    13. Jim Seevers on July 29, 2016

Delays happen. Especially when you demand quality from your vendors(& authors. wink, wink Pat) Thank you for ensuring we get what we expected.

    14. Jocelyn Foxley on July 29, 2016

I agree whole-heartedly with Lora! I add to that my personal thanks for the excellent communication around this campaign.
Being number 9,000+, I expect to be in the second shipment. But I have to ask: while the pledge manager is still open, is there a way to add an option for extra shipping? I would happily add another $30 or so if it meant receiving the rest of my order on time, and just receiving all my wooden bits in a second shipment.
Again, thank you for managing this campaign (and our expectations) so well. It's my first Cheapass Games purchase, and based on this experience, I will certainly be a returning customer.

    15. Chris Ingersoll on July 29, 2016

Honestly I was fully expecting delays here since this is so out of the usual Cheapass Games level of production. This was partially why I opted for just the Tavern Set + Book level (also I planned on buying the Classic set from my FLGS). Happy to hear that those might still ship on time, although I sympathize with the frustrations of anyone who wanted a board.

Hi! Thanks for keeping us in the loop and promptly letting us know about slow downs. Kudos! Christmas needs new plans, but how great it is to have something to look forward to in the dreary days of January and February. :) Or whenever it ships. Quality is what everyone wants, right? No one's fault that the campaign was so successful. Hang in there !

I am totally okay with the delays. Good things are worth waiting for. This is not my first go-round with Cheapass Kickstarter campaigns (I think this is my 5th Cheapass campaign supported) and they have excellent post-funding communication. If there are delays, they are open about it.

So if the Classic Set ships in part depending on what else is in your pledge, but it seems to be the only thing behind schedule, what items might push an earlier backer to the second batch of shipping?

I ordered at the Tinker level and added a cloth board, is that enough to know where I'll be in the shipping order?

And no hard feelings on the delay, guys. Overall this has been one of the best-organized and communicative campaigns I've ever backed. A couple extra months isn't all that big a deal.

    23. Cheapass Games 11-time creator on July 29, 2016

@Liz It is not too late. You can message us to change your order, or you can pre-order the Arcanist's board through Pat's charity, The Tinker's Packs. I do not know when The Tinker's Packs will ship pre-orders.

@Wendy That's very similar to the faces we made, and we are sorry.

@Dove Whatever you decide. We are here if you need to change shipping info.

    24. dove_queen on July 29, 2016

I'm banking on the fact that my backer number is 18... I set the shipping address to be my address while at university, but mid-December is around our final exams (and when people head home for the holidays). Might stick around... Wouldn't be so bad anyway, I wanna explore the city. Of course, I could just request to change my shipping address, but I'm quite stubborn. :) We'll just have to see!
