We just received an updated production schedule from our wooden piece manufacturer, and it’s not as tight as we had hoped. Their problem is volume: they simply weren’t prepared for an order this size.
So, like many other hugely successful Kickstarter campaigns, Tak is going to ship a little late, possibly by a month or two (and that means pushing into early 2017). We are so sorry for this delay!
We wanted to let you know about this as soon as we could, especially since our order deadline of August 5 is rapidly approaching. This is the last chance to upgrade if you want to upgrade to Devi’s Box or Devi's Board, which are being produced in limited quantity. (And those two items are still on schedule!)
Shipping this project will be more complicated than we hoped, and a bit more costly for us, but we now expect to ship backers in waves, based on which items are in each pledge. Here are some details about the various pieces and their schedules:
Classic Sets: We have ordered a huge number of these, and because of this volume, they will be delivered to us in stages. Our small wooden piece maker simply doesn’t have the storage or the equipment to handle all of the pieces at once! Wood must be bought, dried, stored, milled, and finished. This is already underway.
They have told us that the first half of the Classic Set pieces will be finished by the first week of November. After that, the games must be assembled (at the board game plant) and shipped twice more (once to our warehouse, and then to you), so according to this, our earliest date to begin shipping these rewards will be mid-December.
“Mid-December” is not bad; it’s only a couple of weeks past our original goal of “November.” But again, this is only the first half. Depending on your backer number, and what else is in your pledge, you may not get your rewards until early 2017. We know this is missing Christmas and we’re truly sorry.
Wyrmwood Boards and Boxes: Meanwhile, our partners at Wyrmwood are reporting no delays, so they’re still on track to ship their part of this campaign in November. We had always planned to ship Devi’s Box and Devi’s Board directly from Wyrmwood, so regardless of what else is in your pledge, those two items should ship on time! (See photos of work in progress below.)
Arcanist's Boards: Welling Cabinetry are also on time, so the Arcanist’s Boards are not delayed. However, we do still plan to ship the Arcanist’s boards together with other rewards, so your package may be delayed by other items in your box. (We simply did not collect enough in shipping charges to break these into multiple shipments).
Tavern Sets, Cloth Boards, Pairs Decks, etc: These items are mostly on schedule. Ironically, the one thing we needed fastest (Classic Sets) is the one thing that will take the longest to make, so by the time the Classic Sets are built, we will also have all the other components. If you are receiving only a Tavern Set, for example, we might still be able to ship your rewards in November.
Again, we apologize for the shipping delay and this is certainly not an ideal situation for anyone, but Tak is a complicated project with a lot of pieces. Our manufacturer never gave us a clue that high volume was a problem, so we had based our original estimates on other jobs they had done for us in a shorter timeframe. We padded it a bit, but clearly not enough.
Thanks for your patience as we work as hard as we can to bring this game to the world.
In Other News:
The Gen Con “Year Zero” Tak Tournament: The newly formed US Tak Association will host a 30-player tournament at Gen Con next week, sponsored by Wyrmwood and Digital Game Technology! We’ll be there with prizes and makeshift Tak sets, rehearsing for next summer when we actually have games to sell.
James and Patrick at Gen Con: The instigators of this mighty enterprise will be on display to hoot and grunt about Tak, game design, and anything else that pops into their heads, at noon Friday at the Westin hotel in Indianapolis.
James and Patrick at PAX: The guys will also have a "Talk about Tak" (and everything else) panel at PAX West in Seattle. This talk will be Sunday at noon, details TBD. In addition, James will be teaching at PAX Dev, with a talk specifically about crafting abstract games like Tak, on Wednesday at 2:30. Fear not if you're not heading to PAX Dev: James will post the notes shortly thereafter.
Cheapass Games has a new look! We’ve rebuilt the pages at cheapass.com in a cleaner, better format. This means some of your favorite pages might be hiding (for now) but the product pages are all shiny and new. Please check it out and help us make it even better.
Thanks again for your support and patience. We're all eager to get this game to you, and we will keep you posted as the schedule becomes reality.
