Tak is a new abstract strategy game created by James Ernest and Patrick Rothfuss, based on the game in The Wise Man's Fear.
12,187 backers pledged $1,351,142 to help bring this project to life.

It was a real nail-biter at the end, but we managed to squeak out a campaign total for which our largest previous campaign was a rounding error. Seriously, thanks to everyone who helped make this campaign a success.

A special shout-out to our new staffer Cassidy Werner, who joined Cheapass Games as marketing director just in time to launch this campaign. She helped keep this campaign on an even keel, and now we can afford to pay her!

The Tak Kickstarter campaign raised $1,315,142 with 12,187 backers. Among all tabletop games, that puts it at #23 in funding and #13 in backer count. Now that the dust has settled, it's time to start making all this stuff!

Thanks for a great campaign!

What Happens Next?

The next few steps are fairly simple, and we have a rough estimate of the time required for each one. Our projected ship date is November (yes, still November). Here's what happens first.

Now: This week we are finalizing dimensions, wood finishes, and quantities for all the wooden pieces in the game. This is the longest step of the manufacturing process so it begins right now.

Next Week: We work with our friends at After the Crowd to begin constructing the skeleton for the Pledge Manager, and order the wooden pieces from our partners in Maine.

June 3: Kickstarter releases our funds and backer data. Kickstarter takes a full two weeks before releasing our money and our data to us. So, we wait patiently while we work on pre-production (and go to two game conventions).

June 14: This is our estimate for when we expect the Pledge Manager to open. It usually takes us about a week after we receive the backer data. There are 12,000 of you this time, so please be patient while we test the Pledge Manager and get it ready. Once it is open, you will have one full month to respond if you want to add any of the Kickstarter exclusive items. (Longer if you don't.)

July 14: One month after the pledge manager opens, we will set production limits on the following items: Devi's Box, Devi's Board, and the Vintas Royal Capstone. This doesn't mean that they will disappear immediately, but we will have a small fixed number remaining, and when they are gone they are gone.

If you can, please reply to the pledge manager within the first month, because the more data we have, the more precisely we can set our print runs. If you're worried about your address changing later, don't sweat it. Even after you have filled out your survey, you can still come back and change your address, up until the week we start shipping.

Now through September: The rest of the pieces of the puzzle come together: The book, the cloth board, the Pairs deck, etc. Each of these items has a different production time, so we are timing all of them to arrive at our warehouse by October. If we are extremely smart and lucky we will be able to ship early. If not, then we will probably ship rewards in November.

The folks at Wyrmwood are already tooling up for their massive production run of Devi's boards and boxes. They will certainly have their hands full, but they should not have any trouble keeping pace with us.

Note: With a few exceptions, all of the pieces of this campaign are made in the USA. The coins from Campaign Coins are made in China, and the bandannas for the cloth boards are made in China, but printed in the USA.

What Should I Do Now?

Sit tight. If you've had a problem with your credit card, please work it out with Kickstarter (we probably can't help). If your pledge has gone through successfully, you can wait until mid-June. We'll post an update and send email notices when the Pledge Manager is open.

Once in the Pledge Manager, you will be able to allocate any extra funds, add more if you like, and give us your shipping address (address info is something Kickstarter does not collect for us). Without your address we can't ship your rewards, so please don't ignore the invitations to manage your pledge.

While you wait, please help spread the joy of Tak! If your friends missed the campaign, tell them not to worry. The Classic Set will be available to retail stores shortly after the rewards have shipped. Most other items will be available from us or from Worldbuilders for a short time. And we fully expect new Tak sets and accessories to arrive in 2017.

Tak Rocks. Seriously.

This game has not just funded dramatically on Kickstarter. There is an avid fan community building around Tak, the likes of which we have never seen. We have received such universally positive reviews, and there has been so much interest and attention in this game's short life, that we know the game is destined for greatness.

If you backed, if you spread the word, if you sent us your photos and recipes, you helped. A million dollars is a big number, and that gets people's attention. This is what Kickstarter is for. Thanks for helping Tak rise above the noise level, and launch something truly great.

Best wishes and thanks from all the Tak makers!

Just a lazy weekend, playin' Tak.

@David Oh, that makes sense. Thanks!

@Jennifer you can move a standing stone just like any other stone

In the picture, it looks like you have a standing stone on top of a stack. How is that achieved?

@Lex Tak will be available via standard distribution channels. It's up to retailers whether or not they want to bring it in. :)
      @Ashley Nope! Prototype box.

Is the artwork for the box final? I'd like to see something that looks and feels as if it could have been purchased in Tarbean, the attention to details on every other aspect of this project has been top notch. So it would be a shame if it was just the box that detracted from it's authenticity.

Well done on a crazy fun game! I made a basic set and have been playing with a co-worker for a few weeks. Can not wait to get my pack! As long as we do not have to wait years for this book.

I do not see a regular distribution list on that shows what retailers currently carry your games. So i would take we have no idea what retail locations will be carrying Tak yet?

Well done James and crew! Hopefully this teaches other fiction writers to take the fictional games In their work seriously and to seek professional help with them. I can't wait to get my book and craft my own Tak set.

Definitely going to look for him!

@Olna We shot you a message. Everything appears to be okay.

@Keith James will be at Origins, yes.

Mine is in held authorizations. Been happening more recently with KS, taking more time than usual. If there is a problem, KS will notify you (from experience).

My credit card hasn't been declined. My credit card hasn't been charged. Kickstarter is making zero effort to collect money from me and in fact appears to be ignoring my pledge entirely.

I have backed over six hundred projects and this has never happened before. I'm a little weirded out.

Would one of those conventions be Origins by chance?
