I believe the suggestion by Jo was that the board be printed on the bag -when opened- so it wouldn't be limited to the 5 inch closed size, but if the bag were made in a method like Edward has suggested, then it would be easy to open the bag into a usable game board even at the 8x8 size. (12x12 textile, maybe 13x13 to give clearance for the grommets, depending on size)
I'm concerned that a bandana wouldn't be nearly durable enough for a game board, all the ones I've seen are very flimsy, but maybe there are higher quality 'rags' available? Idk.
My preference would be something waterproof (maybe vinyl or leather as suggested by Lewis and Jack) or even just a treated canvas like Sunforger (which is also fire resistant).
I had a cloth chessboard that had grommets around the edges so it could drawstring closed and hold all the pieces. This could be a DIY upgrade as long as the cloth board is large enough.
What about a leather board??
Kind of like an in between the cloth board and the wooden board. I imagine it to be embossed with the grid...
@Jo: The Tavern Set bag is sized to contain the pieces comfortably. It's a compact 5" across, which is smaller than the play area needed for the game, but fits well in a pocket.

You guys are too good at your jobs, you just keep adding things that make me want to keep adding more and more stuff to my pledge, but I don't have unlimited money. (Yet).
I just noticed my copy of Santorini will be on a 5X5 board too... so I could play Tak on a island plynth.
I printed a game board on a vinyl substrate that was nice because it was water resistant. Now the objective was to be useable as a drinking game, so this may be different.
What about getting the image printed ON the bags for the Tavern set?
I thought exactly the same as Szymon.
How about a cloth deck that would also be a pouch for the pieces.
I just added$10 for a deck.
Loving the Pairs deck updates!
