Huzzah! We Funded!

Posted by Cheapass Games (Creator)

Greetings, backers!

It's always a joy to fund on the first day! Huge thanks to our many quick-fingered fans who have already jumped aboard this train.

We have a long and entertaining ride ahead of us, to be sure. We're still finalizing graphics and deck recipes for Girl Genius: The Works, and we'll be talking about the cards, the art, and the strategy of the game throughout the campaign.

But today we'd like to show you more about one of the add-ons that will be part of this campaign, the Foglio Tree Deck for PAIRS.

Pairs is a "New Classic Pub Game" that we brought to life through Kickstarter in 2014. It's a simple game with a simple deck, just the numbers 1 through 10 with 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, and so on. And there are now more than 30 different games you can play with the deck!

It turns out that the simpler a deck gets, the more different games you can make with it! We suppose this proposition must have its limits, as a deck with just one card probably isn't that strong. But the Pairs deck has just the right combination of simplicity and flexibility to lend itself to a wide variety of entertaining new card games.

To add to the ever-widening field of new games, Cheapass Games is currently running an original PAIRS variant every month in Game Trade Magazine. Our first entry in this series was Nine Virtues, coincidentally designed for Phil Foglio's Muses deck!

To see the possibilities of the deck, you can download the 2018 "Pairs Companion," which has more than 30 games and variants, from (This is the same set of games found in the new Deluxe edition, pictured below.)

About the Tree Deck

In 2014 James Ernest and Phil Foglio came up with the crazy idea to make a PAIRS deck from pictures of trees. Phil sketched some trees, and their leaves, in a simple pencil style, and James put the art together into a deck.

Since then, this understated PAIRS deck has been available from our friends at Drive Thru Cards as a print-on-demand deck (without a tuck box). As part of this campaign, we'll print a limited number of fancy boxed versions of this deck, complete with a new Pairs variant game inside!

You can add $10 to your pledge to get your copy of this deck, or you can add it via our pledge manager after the campaign closes.

What's Next?

Stay tuned for previews of more cool games and accessories, including the Jagermonster Poker Deck, coming soon! We'll also have more info about the Funvelope, the play mat, and some upcoming Cheapass Games.

Congratulations again to all of you, for helping us with a stunning first day, and please remember to tell your friends about us!

Thanks for your support,

@Josua: I actually did want to bring back Gizmos and Settings in this edition, but I tested them in the new decks and I found that they really slow down the game. Remembering a lot of passive abilities is taxing, and doesn't significantly improve the experience. So yeah, I missed them too, but only until I tried to play with them. :)

Any chance of some of the dropped mechanics from that predecessor game return to the new Girl Genius game? I miss the way locations could reshape gameplay around them, and gadgets could give you a reason to take a low value card in the hope that its ability would let you do better later.
