We Did It!

Button Folks:

Huzzah! Cheapass Games' tenth Kickstarter campaign is finished! Thanks again to everyone who helped make this campaign a success. We can't wait to share Button Men with you and with the world.

Ultimately, we came within a hair's breadth of our $70k stretch goal, a set of Button Men based on the murderers from Kill Doctor Lucky. If you've backed our campaigns before, you know that we are happy to ignore a little discrepancy. We'll go ahead and make those cards happen. So, consider the $70k goal unlocked!

This might happen for some of the other goals too. The Pairs decks, Fight City reprint, and even a Skully patch, all seem like good ideas, even if they didn't make it into the Kickstarter proper. They might take us a little longer to make, and might become available in some non-Kickstartery way.

James got the chance to teach Button Men to a few new players (and play with a few experts too) as we counted down the campaign's final hour at KublaCon Friday night. Meanwhile, testing continues on all the characters and rules, and we feel pretty good about the balance of the set. It's a big group, and more work than usual to balance, but we're nearly done!

Up next, we'll take a short breather that most people call a "weekend" (well, actually, James will continue to demo and lecture at KublaCon), and then it'll be time to get this game ready for press. We'll keep you posted as we finalize art and design elements and send the various pieces to the printer. Barring unforeseen delays, we should be well on track to ship this game in October. The longest time window is the dice themselves, which we will order straight away.

What's Next for Cheapass Games?

Here are a few other things to check out, coming soon from Cheapass Games.

Gen Con: Our biggest convention of the year will be Gen Con, August 17-20 in Indianapolis. Cheapass Games will have a large (for us) 20x20 booth at Gen Con, dedicated to Tak, Kill Doctor Lucky, and all our favorite games. We will welcome Doctor Lucky himself (BJ Becker), as well as several of his murderers, for autographs and photo sessions throughout the convention!

Deluxe Pairs: A new core Pairs deck is coming soon, complete with an updated Pairs Companion Book featuring more than 30 variant games. The deluxe edition of Pairs is on the schedule for September. If you like Pairs decks, check out some of the new decks at Hip Pocket Games and watch for new decks (including, perhaps, at least one Fight City deck) to appear throughout the summer.

Doctor Lucky's "Mansion that is Haunted": A new expansion board for Kill Doctor Lucky is coming this fall! Doctor Lucky has just sold his ghost-filled mansion to a young and unsuspecting couple from out of town, but the ghosts love him so much that they want to kill him, so he will stay with them forever! This new board for the 19.5th Anniversary edition has novel movement rules, a side-view map of the house, and a few other interesting twists to enjoy!

Rochi: A new gambling game by James Ernest and Sonia Lyris, set in the world of Sonia's "The Seer", Rochi uses a unique Tarot-style deck, in an unusual game about bidding for chances to win, and you can play the open beta version right now! Rochi will probably be Kickstarted this fall by King of the Castle (AKA Campaign Coins), with a release in Spring 2018.

Final Thoughts

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We know it's risky to take a chance on a new game product, even one with a pedigree as golden as Button Men, so we want to thank each and every one of you for taking the leap and participating in this campaign.

There are plenty of other games out there, and even plenty of ways that you can play this game completely for free. By backing this campaign, you have given us the funding we need to bring the game to the world.

Despite its tongue-in-cheek story and simple rules, Button Men is a great tool for teaching arithmetic, probability, and basic game strategy. Now a new generation of players gets to discover it at their local game shop! Without your enthusiastic support, it might have faded quietly away.

Thanks again for your support and your help, and now let's get ready to beat people up!
