We seek freedom in all its gloriously simple flavors: Truck, car, or motorcycle. Pedal, paddle, or just a pair of boots. More important than how we get there is why we go.
What is Adventurist Life?
There’s something special about getting out and exploring, whether a quick afternoon trip or six months on the trail—wouldn’t you agree?
Adventurist Life is an independent, community-driven digital magazine dedicated to the experience of adventure. We're bringing the focus back to exciting journeys, real-world gear, and inspirational stories from adventurists just like you. Let's celebrate exploring new places, meeting new people, and discovering the world around us.
Why Adventurist Life?
Adventures are experienced. Stories are filled with actions and emotions, not the latest shiny toy. The best connections are made while disconnected, exploring new places, sitting around a campfire with family and friends, and making new memories together.
We believe people deserve more adventures, more stories, and more real-life connections. We believe people want to get back to the experience. We believe you are ready for something different. If you thirst for adventure and hunger for meaningful information to help you experience more of this brilliant blue planet we share, join us. Together, we'll explore adventure itself.
How are you building Adventurist Life?
Adventurist Life is designed to thrive entirely on the proceeds from community-led events, training courses and workshops, and most importantly: the affordable subscriptions and generous contributions of our readers.
We've thrown the traditional ad-driven media concept out the window, so we can be accountable only to you: our fellow adventurists. It’s as simple as this: our success depends on your success. We either deliver value to our readers or we go out of business.
PRINT & DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS
We’re publishing digitally on a weekly schedule, with four new features in each issue. In order to keep our central focus on adventure, we’re dedicating half of that schedule exclusively to adventure stories. The other half will be filled with a mix of interviews with adventurists, event coverage, vehicle features, gear reviews, and other inspirational content.
At the end of each year we’ll also be publishing a printed Anthology, featuring the best stories from the year in a hardcover coffee table book. We want these to be archival quality and available to anyone with a thirst for adventure.
Adventurist Life will be available both on the web, and via iOS and Android apps for phones and tablets. Naturally, the app will be able to download content for offline viewing while you’re out in the field. The app will be available in iTunes, Google Play, and in the Amazon Appstore.
Where does all the money go?
A LEGITIMATE KICKSTART
Our first priority, beyond inspiring you with great adventure stories, is taking care of our content creators. We also have a commitment to transparency, and that includes our budget. Here’s a breakdown of where the cash flows once we’ve met our Kickstarter goal:
- $24,000—Kickstarter funding goal
- $2,400—Kickstarter and processing fees (8-10%)
- $1,300—Hosting costs and SSL certificate
- $3,000—App development for iOS and Android
- A Big Variable—Kickstarter subscriber rewards
- The Remainder—Editorial budget (compensating content creators)
The remaining startup and promotion costs we’re covering personally, including investing our own time and skillsets to build the organization, bring content creators on board, and manage the editing and publishing process.
BUILT TO LAST, NOT TO FLIP
We’ve spent months designing Adventurist Life to be independent and efficient. Your contribution (subscription, really) goes toward the bills, but what happens when we start making a profit? Our ultimate goal is to grow this entity into gainful employment for a number of people. That’s when we’ll start transitioning founders from volunteers to full-time employment with the organization, so we can put all of our energy into bringing you even more adventure.
Among our core beliefs is that Adventurist Life must become a vehicle to attainable adventure for as many people as possible. Profits will be continuously reinvested into the best interests of our fellow adventurists: better compensation for content creators, subsidized training for subscribers, maybe even formal sponsorships!

I signed up, so when can I start enjoying Adventurist Life?
We’re anticipating a mid-March launch date for the website, which will include access to all content for subscribers. For the app, we're shooting for a late-April or early-May release on iTunes, Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore (release dates pending app store approvals).
If you signed up for a swag reward, we expect those to start arriving at your doors in early April, if not sooner.
If you signed up to join us on an adventure, we’re working to schedule everyone by the end of the year. We’ll be in touch shortly after the end of the Kickstarter to discuss your interest in locations, schedule, and any other considerations before setting a date (you’ll need to sign a liability waiver and assure us you’re physically capable of attending, of course).
Sharing is Caring.
Help us help you by following us on social media, sharing our Kickstarter campaign with friends, and spreading the word on Adventurist Life’s imminent launch.
You can also help by sending this to anyone you know that loves adventure and is good with a pen and/or camera (or dropping us a line if we just described you). We’re always looking for new stories and good authors to write them.
Thanks for joining us on this adventure. We look forward to seeing you...out there!
Risks and challenges
We’ve done an exhausting amount of research and development over the last several months to ensure everything goes smoothly with this launch, and minimize the risks for all of us. Fortunately, the bulk of the work to be done is directly under our control: building up the content library. Barring a death or serious injury, we should hit the web-launch date right on schedule.
The biggest challenge we foresee is in bringing Adventurist Life to the various app stores. Our release dates are completely dependent on approvals from Amazon, Apple, and Google. We’re bringing on a programmer who’s worked with The Big Three before to build the app and streamline the approval process, helping us get Adventurist Life onto your mobile device by early May (if not sooner).
For those of you who will be joining us in person on an adventure, nature herself could play a role in our schedule. We’ll do our best to stick with the plans we agree on for each adventure, but if the weather creates a safety issue we reserve the right to reschedule our trip to preserve life and limb.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
